Modern society is inflicted with mix opinions of refugees and asylum seekers due to a number of reasons concerning national security and significant impact of social media. Moreover, the Australia’s federal government have implemented detention centers either on the outskirts of Australia or on islands just off shore. As refugees and asylum seekers continue to leave their countries due to conflict, natural disasters or war, shelter and food is required, therefore fleeing to the safe havens of Australia. However, this sparks the question “is the treatment Australia provide to the ‘illegal’ refugees ethical?” and how well do they treat the refugees in comparison to other countries such as the United States and France.
Since 1945, Australia have accepted and resettled over 800,000 refugees, illegal and legal immigrants are often asked about and their status in society, they are known as “unlawful non-citizens” (Service, 2017). This term is used when an individual enters Australia from abroad, without a valid visa or is seeking refuge from their current country due to certain circumstances. Furthermore, certain criteria’s involving various international treaties, obligates the Australian Government to ensure the asylum seekers and refugees human rights are respected and detained (Communism, 2015).
