Are School Uniforms a Good or Bad Idea? School uniforms has been the cause of debate for many years now. Most students like to wear school uniforms because they believe uniforms make schools (“safer for students”) and create “level playing fields” where every student has equal opportunity to succeed and they all apply the same set of rules. However, students and even most parents don’t agree with the enforcement with school uniforms; stating that uniforms take away the right of (“self-expression”). School uniforms are not a negative thing to have. Yes, uniforms limit what the students have to choose to wear to school every day, but it doesn’t limit them from learning; the only reason they are in school. Although some parents oppose …show more content…
However, such an argument completely ignores the fact that students with uniforms behave properly and focus completely on their academic careers and may improve their attendance and discipline (Elisabetta Gentile and Scott A. Imberman, 2010). For example, a 2010 study by researchers at the University of Houston found that the average absence rate for girls in middle and high school decreased by 7% after the introduction of uniforms. The study also found that "behavioral problems shift[ed] towards less severe infractions (Elisabetta Gentile and Scott A. Imberman, 2010). Another study also showed positive result that school uniform policies improve rate of attendance, graduation and suspension (Virginia Ann Bendel Draa, 2005). So this all proves that school uniforms have impacted in positive results, which we can ignore. The final argument stated by the opponents of school uniforms is that school uniforms emphasizes on (“socio-economic divisions”) that the school uniforms are supposed to eliminate. They believe it will not lower the socio-economic status of the people because rich families will stay buy their children every now and then, but the poor families will still have one pair to in the whole school year (US Department of Education and Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2014). On the other hand, proponents of school uniforms say that school uniform may save money. Parents can
Just imagine an intruder is in your school and the police are trying to find him but he’s blended in with the crowd. Now imagine a intruder in your school and everybody is wearing a school uniform except for the intruder. This will allow police to effortlessly pick him out of the crowd and capture him. Unfortunately, all across the world, this fantasy is a reality. For years, there has been a huge controversy going on about school uniforms and how they affect students performances socially and academically. The opposition states that school uniforms are costly and takes away the freedom to express oneself as an individual, yet school uniforms insure student safety and help students stay focussed during school. Although some opponents express the idea that school uniforms are costly and take away the students freedom to express themselves, they fail to recognize that school uniforms insure the safety of students, helps them stay focussed and are cost effective.
Show the opposing side of mandatory school uniforms it will be shown that the uniform cost is a financial hardship on low-income families. In the article, “Should school uniforms be mandated in elementary schools?”, “Low-Income families have to decide whether or not to pay their utilities, rent, or other necessities to ensure that their child has the uniform(s) that he/she needed.” (King, 1998) Low-income families are treated poorly when it comes all aspects of life at some point. The low-income students are often teased because they are too poor to afford the required uniforms and some students are staying away from school to keep from being penalized for not being able to afford to wear uniforms. “A lot of students are suspended or sent to ISS when they do not wear the required uniform to school when this happens the student loses more valuable class time due to dress code violations.” (2015) (paraphrased)
As a society we value the individual choices that we are able to decide upon in our everyday life. School uniforms have a negative effect on students, due to the lack of individuality and self-image that they are able to express. Therefore passing student policies requiring school uniforms is misleading as it creates more issues than it solves. Students should feel they are different from everyone else and have to freedom to act the way they want and wear what they want. Enforcing school uniforms does not affect academic situations in any way for uniforms to be mandatory. Schools need to re-think their decision on school uniform policies for the mental and physical well-being of their students.
Never once was there a time that I walked down the hallways at school without hearing at least one kid get picked on about their clothes. Everyone knew the popular kids from the weird kids, the rich from the poor, and the nerds from the jocks based on their clothing alone. Our school was divided into social groups because of clothing types. Then we got school uniforms. Once we got them, the school became more peaceful. No one got picked on because of their clothes; that was because we all dressed the same. The amount of bullying went down and the sense of kindness soon began to fill the school. The utilization of school uniforms in public schools creates many benefits for students.
School uniforms help create a disciplined atmosphere that is necessary for success in academics (Brookshire 01, 02). Brookshire states that in this study it was realized that, “schools implemented uniforms in an attempt to reduce clothing costs for parents and to help curb social pressures.” (Brookshire 01) Meaning that, school uniforms bring forth more than just one advantage. As the uniforms help
School uniforms have proved to be very costly. Statistics have shown the average person spends 230 dollars annually on uniforms. A total of 1,300,000,000 dollars is spent in the United States every year on uniforms. Also, this has shown that third class citizens are “breaking the bank,” for their child’s uniform costs. The Guardian warns that a rising number of academies and free schools are piling on extra pressure as clothing grants are axed. As more state schools demand costly branded uniforms, poorer families begin to struggle. Many families also spend money on uniforms as well as their child’s everyday clothing. This is a sign to show how uniforms affect your bank account negativity. Publilius Syrus once said, “a small debt produces a debtor; a large one an enemy.”
Students resist peer pressure in buy trendy and expensive clothes. THe estimated annual cost of a uniform is 150$ which includes: a T-shirt, pants, tie, skirt/ blouse ( if female ) and jacket for cold weather (“K12”). Which compared to name brand that might be one pair of shoes, on average a pair of Nike, Jordans can cost from 160$ to 180$ per pair. Buying two sets of uniforms compared to buying a 20$ t-shirt, 30$ pair of pants, 50$ jacket. That's only 80$ and only three things. This is a more cost efficient way of buy clothes. This isn't even include the less fortunate families out there this is a blessing to them. They probably couldn't even afford all the trendy clothes this is better for poor families, but also a way for middle class families to save
Having school uniforms is like trying to fix a broken window, it’s expensive, not enjoyable and leaves you unhappy. Although school uniforms get you dressed faster, Students oppose the uniforms and feel that the school uniforms are uncomfortable. School uniforms have almost no effect: Attendance rates, academic performance, and exam results are the exact same without school uniforms. School uniforms should not be mandatory because they’re expensive, don't allow students to be diverse, and don’t stop bullying.
School uniforms and dress codes are becoming a popular trend among schools. Most Students and some parents don’t agree with the enforcement with school uniforms, saying that uniforms are taking away self-expression in schools. But, school uniforms are not a negative thing to have. Yes, uniforms and some very strict dress codes limit what the students have to choose to wear to school every day, but it doesn’t limit them from learning which is the main reason they are in school. Some students treat school as a fashion show, so eliminating the size of wardrobe shifts the attention toward their school work. Although requiring students to wear school uniforms may violate their self-expression in some ways, a uniform is supposed to be looked
In grades k-5, 46% of the students perceive of uniform as they don't make a difference. Furthermore, 11% of kids k-5 seem to be more competitive about clothing. The following deposition validates that more students seem to be unaffected by uniforms by uniform's benefits and only allows them to be more competitive about clothing thus refuting the intention of uniforms. Additionally, in the graphic, in grades 6-8, 57% of students have become less competitive about clothing. However, the percentages of those are more competitive and the students who are unaffected combine to equalize the percentage of students who have become less competitive. This exemplifies that uniforms don’t make a difference after percentages are computed. Therefore, the institution of school uniforms in public schools are not beneficial as they intended to be, they are only a hindrance to students and it limits their motivation of participating in
School uniforms are becoming a popular trend amongst schools worldwide. Students and even most parents don’t agree with the implementation with school uniforms; declaring that uniforms take away the right of self-expression. This topic has both pros and cons that can impact youth in both a good and bad way. School uniforms can be beneficial to learning. The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self- expression. Requiring school uniforms eliminate the debate over whether to require uniforms or not is controversial, undeniably complex, and, from the analyses and arguments that are unquestionably rooted in multifaceted social, political, legal, cultural, racial material, and educational structures. The topic has both pros and cons that can be impact youth in both a good and bad way. One factor can be Academic outcomes; uniforms can reflect a student’s work ethnic as well as grades. Another factor can be behavioral outcomes; wearing uniforms may change a student’s attitude to being more professional since they look more
It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn’t entirely correct. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don’t make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today’s society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don’t earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems.
The implementation of uniforms was to increase student success, and deter bad behavior. Their has yet to be a link that suggest a substantial connection between the school uniform policies and student achievement. The results do not particularly deny or back either side of the uniform argument. The results do nonetheless strongly intimate that uniforms are not the solution to all of American education’s ills. Though this was the initial reason to have students switch to uniforms there is
School Uniforms are being pushed more and more in schools, but what is commonly thought of when the words “school uniform” is said? For most people the picture of children in the same colored uniforms gathered in front of a Catholic Church or a private school is displayed in their mind. This picture is one of the many problems with school uniforms. Instead of being seen as an individual, students are seen as just another kid in a uniform attending a fancy private school. The students cannot develop the self-expression that is crucial to their development at this age. Uniforms are thought to create a more protected campus and learning environment, however, if someone wants to bully someone else, clothes are not going to stop them. The cost, which is usually seen as a pro, can actually be more than people anticipate. As one can see, in the best interest of any student, school uniforms should not be made part of the dress code.
Student’ clothing generally does not disrupt education in schools and therefore should have the right to choose their outfits. Students use clothing as an outlet for self-expression and as part of their identity. Advocates for uniforms are convinced that uniforms are effective, however; forcing students to wear uniforms has a negative impact on academic achievement. School uniforms are not beneficial to student’ education in the public school.
