The United States is idolized for its military power throughout the world. Advancements in technology over the last few decades have presented alternative techniques for previous practices on the battlefield. For example, as a response to the 9/11 attacks the United States is actively using drone strikes across the globe to eliminate dangerous threats before they have the opportunity to attack outside targets. Obviously, there are both pros and cons to this strategy that entail making ultimate sacrifices. Growing up in the “land of the free and the home of the brave” means that you are able to freely express the concerns and opinions that you hold among the public without having to worry about who is listening. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C., “killing everyone on board...and nearly 3,000 people on the ground.” (www.history.com). The president during this horrific event was George W. Bush and he was participating in a reading demonstration at Emma E. Booker Elementary in Sarasota, Florida when he received the news of the attack. Bush stated in a later interview with National Geographic that, “You really don’t know what it’s like to be a wartime president until the moment occurs.” How would you take the sudden news that the country you were in charge of is under attack by an unknown source? There isn’t a manual or handbook given to the president on how to handle events similar to 9/11 when he is sworn into office as Commander in Chief.
