Pros And Cons Of The 9/11 Attacks

September 11, 2001, will forever be remembered as a day of tragedy for the United States as an act of terrorism killed roughly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, and 200 at the Pentagon. Terrorists hijacked four separate aircraft that day, two planes were crashed into the north and south tower of the World Trade Center in New York, one was crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia, and the last one crashed into a field where it was believed that passengers disrupted the hijackers, causing the aircraft to crash before reaching its target. Both towers eventually fell, and this attack brought about the beginning of many changes for the United States, that had a ripple effect onto other nations. On September 20th, Bush called for an emergency joint session of the US Congress where he announced the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (MacFarlane, P. J., 2017). Along with this new department came the development of several measures that were implemented to prevent future attacks. Although the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were devastating and caused turmoil and unrest for the United States, even to present day, there were some positive outcomes to be had from this event.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, two planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the symbol of military and capitalism; the World Trade Center (History.com). This attack killed approximately 3,000 people (History.com). One other plane crashed into the Pentagon and 125 people lost their lives in that attack (History.com). That day, referred to as 9/11, left a stain in the hearts and minds of many Americans. These attacks brought out the hero in a great deal of people, but many heroes died on that day, and those heroes will never be forgotten. Because of this tragic event, millions of American citizens were injured or have had to endure the lasting effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (History.com). This awful event is our hope for the future because it taught us we need to combat terrorism better and we are still fighting this battle today (History.com).

On September 20, 2001, President George W. Bush made a speech on the terrorist attack, which took place on September 11, 2001. The people of America needed support and direction on how to handle what just happen. The American people demanded that the President addresses the Nation after the attacks and guide them. Nine days later, President Bush did just that. Over the next few days, emotions ran high in the country. “Will this happen again?” “Is it safe to leave in my home?” many wondered. Everywhere throughout the Nation, airlines had stopped service, the New York Stock Exchange was temporarily suspended, and every tv channel around the country played the latest news about the attack. The American people understandably asked and asked “What’s next?” from their leaders, so when President Bush gave his

Bush uses his presidential platform to help alleviate the fear of the American people. In doing this he had to act poised, calm, and professional as his predecessors had to in times of catastrophe and tragedy. Bush had been in the middle of a book reading at an elementary school in Florida at the time of the attack. As soon as the attack happened Bush was contacted and immediately boarded Air Force One, flew from Florida to Washington D.C., made this address to the nation, and finally he flew to New York to aid the first responders in the cleanup of the wreckage. This showed professionalism on Bush’s part because he had dropped everything to help his country. This made the people want

September 11. 2001 was a major turning point in American History, and its political and social impact can still be felt today. The tragic event shook the entire country on the civilian and federal level. Before 9/11 many did not think that a plan of terrorism such as that of Osama Bin Laden's would be able to come to fruition because they had great trust in American security. The destruction came as a wakeup call to the federal government and American citizens themselves. National Security became the first thing people thought of when they traveled, and civilians looked to the government for reassurance that they were safe. The federal government's plan of action was to pass a series of acts that would go on to create the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Association. Along with the creation of more strict security measures came the question of "who is a terrorist?" within the country. The formation of the DHS, TSA, and increase of Islamophobia are some examples of the lasting effects that 9/11 had on the country.

9/11 shifted the primary role of the US government to keeping US citizens safe, but it is not at the expense of individual freedoms. After the 9/11 attacks took almost 3,000 lives and shocked not only the US but other countries, the US decided to make changes to certain things, in order to prevent more attacks. The government did this by detaining illegal aliens, teaming up with other countries, creating a new department of Homeland Security, and bumping up security. These actions did not take away individual freedoms, they are rather saving lives and keeping the US safe from unwanted threats.

April 15, 2013 hundreds of innocent Americans were traumatized forever. The 117th annual Boston Marathon was hit with an act of terrorism. Two-hundred-sixty people lost their legs while three people lost their lives. On this day Americans realized how important security is. One thousand federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel sat down and watched surveillance footage for hours tracking the terrorist that caused the Boston Bombing to occur. April 18, 2013 the FBI released footage and images of suspects whose identity was once unknown to gain more knowledge. Due to security footage the men who committed the monstrous act were brought to justice. Without the public surveillance these terrorist would have never been found. After the tragic events of 9/11, the government desperately needed to find a way to contradict terrorism. They approached this conflict by passing the Patriot Act in October 26, 2001, signed by President George W. Bush. This act widened the government’s authority to invade their citizens’ privacy, while reducing checks and balances like judicial oversight, public accountability, and the ability to challenge government searches in court. Even though the Patriot Act was purposely ratified to benefit our country from dangerous terrorists, some people quarreled and disapproved of it. In my perspective, I would have also disagreed on the Patriot Act.

What if the Boston bombing never happened? If immigrants were forced to assimilate, events like the Boston bombing wouldn’t have happened. I believe that immigrants should be forced to assimilate into their new country. The Boston bombing was the result of two immigrants that let hatred take over themselves. The process of assimilation also helps each country’s economy to grow with a faster rate. But that is not all, assimilation keeps countries from dividing. From this, I believe immigrants should assimilate.

Terrorism can be considered to be evil, but could there be an attack of terrorism that is eviler than another? Many, many terrorist attacks have happened from since the beginning of time to now. The two that is going to be compared will be 9/11 in New York, and the recent attack in Charlottesville, VA. As 9/11 is a well-known terrorist attack to the United States of America, it can be implied that 9/11 was the worst and most evil terrorist attack there has ever been, when in reality all terrorist attacks are evil, but deciding which one, Charlottesville or 9/11, was the evilest will be difficult.

Bush greets our nation with the upmost detailed, direct and emotional speech following the “series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts (1).” When the most powerful person in our nation addresses us beginning with a statement like that, you cannot help but automatically have that gut feeling or sense of knowing this is not a good situation. As Bush continues on with his speech stating, “Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government’s emergency response plans…our military is powerful, and it’s prepared (3)” the intensity has sparked. From two statements Bush has pulled viewers, readers, and listeners into his speech through emotion. Emotions of fear, anger, confusion, hurt and loss being a start to a long list of feelings people have begun to feel. However Bush then state’s, “Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks, (3)” giving people a more reassuring and hopeful view, despite the tragedy unfolding right before their eyes. Towards the end of Bush’s speech he speaks “on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance…and we stand together to win the war against terrorism, (5)” in order to show positive unity. On September 11, 2001, America was attacked by terrorists. Before this traumatic event, one could not even imagine someone doing such a thing. When this event occurred everyone had been unaware and continuing their daily activities only to be stopped by this life changing news. The president at the time was George W. Bush. Doing day to day activities like the rest of us, he was reading to a second grade class that bright Tuesday morning. Upon hearing about the news, he was utterly shocked along with the rest of America. At approximately 8:40 p.m., which is around 12 hours after the event, he gave a speech to address this horrendous event. President Bush had successfully created a sense of unity and security throughout the country with his speech by using ethos, pathos, logos, tone and imagery.

September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
