On the contrary, to victimizing trans men, we can see how we treat trans men in comparison. Moreover being a man in our society is the best situation one can be in. Society sees trans women as the epitome of not being a man. However, they are also less of a woman because they are not biologically women and can never be even if they get a sex change. The reason for this is because they are pretending to be women within society. We inherently use masculinity and femininity to treat people differently and in particular behavior. One way we can see this is by comparing how we act towards trans men in comparison to trans women. In Kristen Schilt and Laurel Westbrook research we can see that trans men are more accepted within males because trans
In the United States, at least 0.3% of our population is comprised of transgender individuals. Of whom struggle with numerous discriminatory laws. Although this is not a large number it doesn’t justify these acts.
Recently, especially with the most recent presidential election in November of 2016, there have been multiple debates on whether or not the U.S. should have transgender bathrooms in public places, such as rest stops and restaurants. That was one of the issues that the presidential candidates of 2016 argued on. A large majority believed that there should be transgender bathrooms provided by the Federal Government, but if you were to think about it, would we make taxpayers pay for these facilities whereas they’re not even Transgenders or would we take money out that’s supposed to go to the military for an issue that’s not even that big of a concern?
In a lot of places around the world more and more people are coming out as “Transgender.” The term transgender means that the person’s gender identity does not correspond with the gender they were assigned as having at birth. From personally having a transgender boyfriend I have since realized that these people experience a lot of discrimination in and from society. Many people simply just do not understand what the term transgender means and they see it as someone just “wants to be a man” or “wants to be a woman.” While there may be people who present it this way, it is more so that the individual just “feels” different, and “feels” as if they are “in the wrong body.” Some people experience this feeling at a young age as my boyfriend did in his elementary age. We live in a world who put these people down for being who they truly are, and no human being wants or needs that.
Transgendered persons can potentially lose their position in the military. Although other political leaders disagree with president’s trumps proposal. I disagree with the proposed actions that transgenders should be banned from the military, based on material and nonmaterial components. The terms Heterosexism, cultural relativism, feminist and standpoint theory will be used to support my decision.
Banning transgenders from serving in the military contradicts civil liberties. The government would be in violation of that law because it protects the rights of citizens. The U.S. Constitution does state in the first 10 amendments, which is the Bill of rights was designed to protect the citizen’s rights and freedom. Transgenders is a choice, a person’s choice, much like religion. The government has no authority to intervene on a personal free choice as free citizen. Banning transgenders from serving in the military is considered a form of discrimination and violates the Bill of Rights. Power is limited on the government and denies the right to interfere with a citizen’s personal choices.
Most don’t explicitly look into the complexity of a transgender person’s life and all the questions or problems one might face: Do I use the men’s or the women’s bathroom? Is it appropriate to use this locker room? Those are only two of the many questions a transgender person might run into on a daily basis because of how others would see the situation, how the people who may have a sneaking suspicion that the woman they saw go into the ladies’ bathroom isn’t actually female by their definition, or how it could also seem strange to see that same person go into the mens’ bathroom. These all lead to dysphoria in any person’s situation in public places due to the fact that many choose to taunt or mock the person; however, with the help of Title IX these questions could start to vanish from the thoughts of many transgender students which Blad exemplifies with a quote in her article:
When discussing injustices, it is pivotal--for the sake of true progressive social change--to include all oppressed groups into the dialogue. Transgender People tend to be heavily misrepresented and demonized. Because of transphobia, there
June 30th 2016, Rizzo & Cohen, (2016) with CNN wrote a piece on Defense Secertary Ash Carters’ decision to allow transgender individual to enlist, commission, and sereve openly in the U.S. Military. This order also allows hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery if medically reccomended. It is estimated that there are 15,000 transgender individuals currently serving in the U.S. military, according to a recent study by the Williams Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles Law School. The policy also states that any transgender joining the forces must have 18 months of stability in their new gender.
According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey conducted in 2011 that received responses from more than 6, 000 trans people, it was found that over half (53%) of them have claimed to have experience harassment not only at/in bathrooms, but other public accommodations as well such as hotels and restaurants and 10% of trans people have reported to have been physically attacked while at these facilities. (Tash par.1) These people are discriminated against almost every single place they travel to. No human being deserves to be treated this way as everyone is built relatively the same.
Just Add Hormones, by Matt Kailey (2005), shows how transpeople are perceived as ‘others’, but are really just people who just want to be accepted. All throughout the book, Kailey (2005) expresses that he tries to act like and be what men act like in order to gain the acceptance that every human being desires. Even in the push for rights of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, transpeople are rejected and looked down on, even though, as Kailey (2005) puts it, “we share a common problem—we are all discriminated against because of our gender” (Kailey, 2005, p. 93). Furthermore, in general society, transpeople are perceived as sex offenders for going into a restroom, when in reality “we are in there for one purpose only, just like everyone else is,
In 2016, former president, Barack Obama lifted the ban of transgenders being in the military. Now the question comes up, should transgender be allowed in the military? This is a very “touchy” topic as when discussed in verbal debates, situations can become pretty heated. Recently, current president, Donald Trump reversed the decision and put the ban back on as he made the announcement on Twitter saying, the military does not need to be “burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgenders in the military would entail.” (Caceres). Several members of the military have voiced their opinions on why they think transgenders should be allowed in with no problem.
Transgender people are discriminated on an almost daily basis. They are discriminated in the workplace, as shown in a study commisioned by the Equalities Review. In a group of transgender people who have jobs and are prone to workplace-enviroment effects and opinions, “many respondents experienced harassment from co-workers and employers.” Nearly 29% of the group experience verbal abuse and harassment in the workplace enviroment, and about 4% received physical abuse. About 7% experienced threats, and about 27% experienced some sort of different treatment due to their gender non-conforming ways.(Whittle 38-39). In another study, it was found that being mistreated in the school years would have a negative effect on future outcomes relating to employment. “Those who were physically attacked in school were considerably more likely to stay in a job (64%) compared to those who were not (42%) (Grant 50).” They are also discriminated in public as well, adding on to the distress that many transgender people suffer from regularly, making it seem as if all transgender people are crazy. Transgender people are just more likely to be diagnosed as someone with a mental disorder because its helpful to see that those who have been diagnosed are “hurting and something needs to be done to help (Kreitler 1).” In
Transgender women should be allowed in women-only places for many reasons because, violence against trans women, not being accepted and discrimination towards them should stop. To begin with, male violence towards the trans woman should come to an end. Normally, trans women are victims of violence due to transphobia. For example, “A 2005 study, found that 50% of transgender women had experienced intimate partner violence in their lives.'' (Sophia Banks, CBC News, 2017, ‘Banning Trans Women From Women-Only Facilities Punishes Them For The Sins Of Others’). Male violence against trans women is a reason why trans women should be allowed in women-only spaces. Next, trans women don't feel accepted in society. They feel excluded and don't feel involved
The World Bank-funded forestry project in Uttarakhand provided an average of Rupees 1.5 to 2 million for implementing a micro-plan in each village brought under Village Joint Forest Management. This has promoted inequity between villages. The sudden offer of large sums of money to selected villages with high unemployment and limited opportunities for cash incomes has also led to the eruption of major conflicts within villages to gain control over the funds. Sustainable voluntary protection, often by women’s groups, had been replaced by patrols of externally-funded watchmen. Furthermore in Uttarakhand, better quality Van Panchayat forests were being selected for this project. This actually enabled the Forest Department to claim credit for years of management effort by the villagers. Such large inflow of money have also had implications for the community where the power dynamics between men and women in preserving forests also shifts often to the disadvantage of women.
