Transgender Soldiers in the Military
The United States military should not discriminate against a person’s race, religion, gender, or nationality when recruiting for new members. As long as they are able bodied and can provide the necessary skill set in order to get the job done, they should have the opportunity to join and remain in our nation’s armed forces without any form of discrimination. This would include those who are transgender and who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ means lesbian, gay, transgender, and queer. Transgender individuals have been serving in the military since the Civil War in 1861 (Paul 1). Along with the United States, other countries such as Israel, France, and Germany have allowed transgender individuals to serve in the military. Around 150,000 transgender soldiers have served in the military over the past years and are currently serving in the military. However, President Donald Trump tweeted a couple of months ago that he requested to ban all transgender people from joining the military. In the tweet he said, “...the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military” (Latifi 1). He also does not want to give out medical treatment to transgender soldiers in the military (Diamond 1). According to Donald Trump, members of the transgender community do not belong to the military. Transgender individuals should be allowed to be in the military and have the medical treatment they need from serving in the military. People in the transgender community should have the same rights as others when it comes to joining the military because some have the skill set and experience that would play a pivotal role in our nation’s military to protect our country like the other men and women currently serving in the United States armed forces. Transgender soldiers are against Trump’s request and tweets because they feel that they can play an important role in and have the ability and experience to serve for the military. They also feel that they are just like anyone else currently serving in the military and they should not be discriminated against. Army Captain Jennifer Peace stated in an article, “There
First, Transgender military troops should serve in the military, because any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should have the right to serve in the military. They got rid of Transgenders in the military, because they don’t want to pay for medical bills when a lot of the Transgenders that serve in the military have already had their surgeries done. For example, There is no reason to force service members who can fight, train, and deploy to leave the military — regardless of their gender identity. If they can do exactly what everyone else can do, they don’t have the right to ban them from serving our country, despise their gender. According to Ada Edelman, “No American, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, should be prohibited from honor + privilege of serving our nation #LGBT,’ tweeted Rep.” In addition, The Department of Defense found that health care funds will remain broadly unaffected by allowing Transgender people to serve while health care cost raise will likely be no more than one-tenth of 1 percent. The financial cost of health care for Transgender individuals should not be used as an excuse to deny patriotic Americans an opportunity to serve their country. Overall, Transgender troops should serve in the military if they are capable and are medically stable to.
I believe that transgender athletes pose major issues regarding keeping sports accomplishments untainted. For example a world class male sprinter would destroy the female records, but he'd be considered an average male sprinter. The same holds true for the military based on the fitness requirement for females. The only people that are going to be pushed beyond their physical limitations are the females transitioning to
Every day, there are American citizens who risk their lives for the sake of their country's safety. Men and women who believe that justice, peace, and equality should be served. However, within their beliefs, some choose to exclude transgender individuals who have the same rights and freedoms. The American society considers the world to be progressively changing and growing, however, seem to forget that in order for the military to survive the 21st century, diversity is crucial. Although the medical costs may raise the overall healthcare median per year, transgender individuals should have the right to serve in the U.S. armed forces because any human being who meets the physical qualifications and has a willing attitude should have the right to serve.
Transgendered persons can potentially lose their position in the military. Although other political leaders disagree with president’s trumps proposal. I disagree with the proposed actions that transgenders should be banned from the military, based on material and nonmaterial components. The terms Heterosexism, cultural relativism, feminist and standpoint theory will be used to support my decision.
Every person in the United states is entitle to their rights based on the amendments. Transgender students are protected by Title IX and cannot be neglected in schools by anyone or they will stop receiving federal money. “The Justice and Education Departments issued guidance that, under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, schools receiving federal money may not discriminate based on a student’s transgender status and that the departments would treat a student’s gender identity as the student’s sex for purposes of enforcing Title IX.” (According to New York Times). This should be applied to every single school not only schools that get federal money because every transgender student should be protected by a law just as every other cisgender student. Every single citizen in the United states is protected by their civil rights which is “the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and
I believe that Mr. Trump will have no success on banning transgenders from the military. I can understand the concerns of the financial aspects of the transgender medical related cares for members. Woman have been fighting for quality since the 1960s, to have equal rights as men, and today they have it. Equal rights mean just that, equal rights for the both male and female. Civil Rights assures equality from the government and Trump needs to remember that. Removing transgenders from the military based on their transgender is deplorable and curl. These people have families to support. I believe the federal courts will take a case against this situation and ban Trump from doing any banning
According to the opposing group, the presence of LGBT people in the military undermines the trust among soldiers and can reduce the overall effectiveness of the military. While they think all who want to serve the military should, they also think not all of them are able to. One says there are certain qualifications and expectations in the military and if you are transitioning or
Another problem with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is that, if discovered, homosexuals will be discharged from the military. The discharge of a homosexual from the military, based on his personal life, is a violation of equal rights. Every human is different, but none should be judged separately based upon who they are. “We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else” (Obama 1). This statement shows that the nation does know about equal rights and is pushing for equal rights; therefore, “don’t ask, don’t tell” needs to be repealed for the integrity of our nation.
This new restriction that the President of the United States (Donald J Trump), which would not allow Transgenders to serve in the military. This new order or restriction is tremendously discriminatory with the fact that we are being threatened. In my opinion is a big mistake now with the threat of North Korea on America’s shoulders, we need more soldiers to serve or at least volunteer for this country. Quoting Trump’s tweet “...will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US
Donald Trump is closing the circle of liberty for people, including people in our military that happen to be transgender by denying them the ability to serve our country as well
Even though, the Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced new rules and policy for transgender troops serving in the military after a year of contentious debate inside the Pentagon because, some senior military leaders questioned the impact on readiness.
In 2016, former president, Barack Obama lifted the ban of transgenders being in the military. Now the question comes up, should transgender be allowed in the military? This is a very “touchy” topic as when discussed in verbal debates, situations can become pretty heated. Recently, current president, Donald Trump reversed the decision and put the ban back on as he made the announcement on Twitter saying, the military does not need to be “burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgenders in the military would entail.” (Caceres). Several members of the military have voiced their opinions on why they think transgenders should be allowed in with no problem.
After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you. (@realDonaldTrump)
Throughout centuries of generations, there have been many changes that have influenced sexual tolerance. Sexual tolerance is defined as “the acceptance of multiple sexual orientations and lifestyles, generally accompanied by the appropriate legal and civil rights” (Urban Dictionary, 2009). Though there have been improvements in tolerance, there are still many different views on the recent policies, laws or social trends occurring towards sexual and gender orientation. Every aspect of society, from the Department of Defense to local school departments, are beginning to adapt to this growth in gender identity and orientation. An article published by the New York Times (Rosenberg, 2016) addresses an uprising policy on the acceptance of
In a lot of places around the world more and more people are coming out as “Transgender.” The term transgender means that the person’s gender identity does not correspond with the gender they were assigned as having at birth. From personally having a transgender boyfriend I have since realized that these people experience a lot of discrimination in and from society. Many people simply just do not understand what the term transgender means and they see it as someone just “wants to be a man” or “wants to be a woman.” While there may be people who present it this way, it is more so that the individual just “feels” different, and “feels” as if they are “in the wrong body.” Some people experience this feeling at a young age as my boyfriend did in his elementary age. We live in a world who put these people down for being who they truly are, and no human being wants or needs that.
