February February...there’s a lot of things I think about in this month. The first thing I think about is Valentine’s Day, with all the love in the air. Most importantly, the second thing I think about is Black History. In everybody’s mind this is the shortest month of the year, it’s about love, and the appreciation of African Americans. What is Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s Day is going out your way to do something for a loved one. But why should people have to really show their love for someone in a certain month, on a certain day? Love should always be expressed everyday. Valentine’s Day was created by a man named St. Valentine. There are many stories on how this became such a big holiday, but one story says that he was imprisoned and he wrote the “first Valentine” to the love of his life because he was going to die, ending the letter with “From your Valentine.” Later in life, it became more about love because people during the middle ages began to realize that during the middle of February is which the 14th, the birds’ mating season had beginned which resulted in love. But, I feel that Valentine’s Day has its pros and cons. It is about being loved by someone and being able to express how you feel towards a loved one. This day is usually men going out their way to do something special for their significant other. Sometimes it is the women doing something special, but the men are usually the ones to do something special first. Some people have a really good Valentine’s
Some holidays I celebrate are associated with religion. For example, one holiday I celebrate is Christmas. To my family and I, it more than just about Santa Claus and giving gifts. It is the day Jesus, our Lord and Savior, was born. I do give gifts to others, but I also incorporate the religious aspect by attending church. Another holiday that is celebrated by all African-Americans is Black History Month. Occurring the entire month of February,
What is Memorial Day? Memorial Day is a holiday celebrated the last Monday of May; During Memorial Day, we celebrate those who gave all they had, physically and mentally, for the rights and privileges of this amazing country, which would be nothing without those wonderful citizens. A true meaning of Memorial Day is to honor the doughty departed, the valiant veterans and the stout-hearted soldiers, but that a merely a scratch at the surface.
Black History Month or African American History Month is celebrated every year to recognize the vital role of African American in the United States History. Black History Month has been honor in February. The main reasons to mark February as a History Month was because the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln who abolished slavery is in February. Also, the birthday of Frederick Douglass, who was a social reformer and abolitionist, is on the week of February. The other reason is an African American gain the right to vote in February. Those ideas make February commemorate African American and American History Month. There are several reasons for the celebration of African American History Month.
Veterans Day was started on November 11, 1918. Before it was called veterans day it was called Armistice Day to represent the men who fought in WWI. After the United States went through WWII and the Korean War. The 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by taking the word Armistice out and put the new word Veterans in place of it to represent every American that served in any war the U.S. has been in. Veterans Day was then moved to be celebrated on the fourth Monday of October, but most States didn’t agree with that decision made, so they tried it and it brought so much confusion when in 1971 it was celebrated on Oct. 25, until President Gerald R. Ford signed a law that states Veterans day will be moved onto the original
It is a excellent holiday for everyone to enjoy the days off. For example, this spring break was really convenient for me because this semester was really strenuous for me and it helped me take a brake from school work. This resulted, my mind revive so i was set to go back to school. Nevertheless, sports and school are extremely tiring which made me be exausted during track season. Spring break gave me the week to just focus on my workouts for track and it let my body recover for the rest of the day.
That day is called Memorial Day which is celebrated on the last Monday in May each year. General John Logan stated on May 5, 1868 “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May was chosen to remember all of our fallen soldiers because that is when all the flowers are in
One day dedicated annually to those who have undergone pains worse than death for their country, and have served honorably and faithfully, seems paltry recompense. Every stalwart soldier that has seen war, is a hero matching the likes of Odysseus, Theseus, and Achilles. A great hero deserves great reward, therefore the absolute minimum one should give to a veteran is an acknowledgment of the great debt owed to them. Without our veterans, Americans would have long been subjugated to the whimsy of merciless, bloodthirsty foreign leaders, therefore America's veterans should be baptized in gratitude. There are no monsters in the world, only people, and our veterans were once the only thing protecting humanity from
February 15 is an important date in my life, but not only for my life for the lives of others
If you want to know anything about memorial day you should first know what it is. Memorial day is celebrated to honor our veterans who lost their lives defending our country. Memorial day is also a national holiday, meaning we get the day off to celebrate it. Every year, memorial day is celebrated on the final Monday of May, so it will be celebrated on May
Black history month Is a month for blacks to appreciate and respect them. And most importantly to appreciate dr martin luther king jr for all he tried doing to make blacks accepted. We do not know how much hurt we do to blacks when we kill them or whatever we do. But most blacks do not know how it feels to be called racist when where
However, Woodson never intended the month to be in recognition of black firsts and recognized icons. The month was intended to be a stepping stone around the hate of the era and eventually have black history included in the teachings of American history.
My research paper for Black History Month I will be talking about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta Georgia. Martin who was a Baptist minister and a civil-rights activist. The seismic race relation in the U.S. started in the mid 1950’s. Martin played a pretty big role in ending legal segregation of all Black or African-American citizens in the South and in other areas of the nation. With the creation of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and also the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Martin later received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 with some other honors.
December twenty-nine, two thousand and seven is a date that is forever in my mind. The
Patriot’s Day is an official state holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord which marked the first shots of the Revolutionary War. Since 1969, the holiday has been celebrated on the third Monday of April in the states of Massachusetts and Maine. It marks a three-day weekend for these citizens. The biggest celebration on Patriot’s Day is the Boston Marathon, which has been a tradition since 1897.
June 1st, the start of summer, for me, was always a bittersweet day. My mother would tell my brother, Ian and I to climb into the back of her red Buick Regal and we would embark on a 3-hour drive to Muskegon, Michigan. Of course I slept the
