Is Prospero a symbol of Shakespeare? Robert Graves once said, "The remarkable thing about Shakespeare is that he is really very good – in spite of all the people who say he is very good." We can agree that William Shakespeare is a brilliant poet, author, and most importantly, a playwright of the 15th century. In The Tempest written by Shakespeare himself, his legacy is portrayed by just a single character whose name is Prospero through his actions, and sayings. Throughout the play, Prospero is a powerful man and controller. Before Prospero landed on the island, his devotion to the study of magic got him into trouble. While Prospero's nose was buried into his studies, his brother Antonio managed to steal the title as "Duke of Milan" and get him thrown out of Italy. In (1.2.150-156), Prospero explains to Miranda that one night his brother Antonio and an army got rid of Prospero by kidnapping him. Even before Prospero was physically isolated …show more content…

Shakespeare then speaks about his own retirement from the theater when Prospero says, "Now my charms are all o'erthrown, / And what strength I have's mine own" (Epilogue). He simply ask that we appreciate what he's done, and respect his retirement to disappear quietly, leaving his words after he is gone. After learning about the shipwreck survivors, Prospero says "the rarer action is / In virtue than in vengeance" (5.1.35-36). instead of the kind of violent vengeance that could have turned The Tempest into a tragedy, Prospero eventually realizes that mercy and forgiveness is what makes us human. In conclusion, The Tempest by William Shakespeare has its own little secrets that you most likely wouldn’t have known. Shakespeare creates Prospero and shares the same personalities by their actions and sayings.
