Introduction
There is a widespread discrepancy in the definition of prostitution, most would agree that it is: sexual in nature, and the compensation for performing the sexual act is either money or other material goods; however, these transactions vary, ranging from specified sexual acts and goods, which can be exchanged to broader context. These transactions occur in the street, bawdyhouse, massage parlour, and inside private residences or hotels.
For the purpose of this study, male prostitutes and sexual acts such as pornography, stripping and erotic massages are excluded from the definition of prostitution. The terms ‘sex worker’ and ‘prostitute’ will be used interchangeably throughout the paper. The term ‘sex work’ was coined to circumvent the stigma that accompanies prostitution and to acknowledge that it generates income, like any other profession in our society (Sondhi, 2011).

Canadian political solution to the problems associated with prostitution has been achieved at the expense of the health and human rights of sex workers (Glenn, and Csete, 2005). Canada’s prostitution legislation must promote equality and offer opportunities for women to exit prostitution. If a guaranteed income was in place for all Canadians, women would not turn to prostitution due to poverty and those who wish to exit prostitution would be able to do so (PATHS, 2014). Decriminalizing prostitution and ensuring economic equality would allow women to feel they have a right to work in prostitution, but would also support those who wish to exit prostitution.
