Dexter Green is the protagonist in the story Winter Dreams, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The stories main focus is Dexter, portraying his love life and all his success. Dexter has many struggles in his life starting with the stories enemy, Judy Jones. Judy is not a pleasant character because of her actions and her ways in the story. The winter is surely when the novella’s tone goes downhill. As the nights grow longer, and the days grow colder, the mood of this book darkens . “ The sky is an empty hopeless gray and gives the impression that this is its eternal shade. Winter’s occupation seems to have conquered, overrun and destroyed everything…” This quote shows the change in mood that winter has brought.
Notwithstanding Dexter Green positive attributes and financial success, the author shows how all his dreams are not more than an illusion, and when he realizes it, he now has nothing; all his wealth will never fulfill the void in his life. This illusion or “Winter Dreams” as he called are massively related with the idealization of Judy Jones. Clinton S. Burhans, Jr. in his dissertation, for example, says, “With the real Judy out of his life, the girl he had dreamed of having can remain alive in his imagination, unchanging in the images of her youthful beauty and desirability”. In Dexter’s mind, the image of Judy full of beauty and vitality will be eternal, and it will become the principal source of inspiration to keep forward. This image

Have you ever have felt like two completely different people? Dexter Morgan has been all of these throughout his entire life since he was little. His mother was killed in front of him when he was at a very young age. A cop named Harry Morgan had founded Dexter when he was in a pool of blood beside his mother. He taught Dexter all of these ways to not get caught. To keep his hands clean without being under someone’s radar. Dexter’s character arch is symbolic of the human struggle to move from the primitive monster to the noble and compassionate messiah.
Dexter Morgan is the main character from a book series written by Jeff Lindsay. The novels were adapted and turned into a Showtime TV series entitled Dexter in 2006. Born February 1, 1971 as Dexter Moser to Laura Moser and Joseph Driscoll, he lived with his mother and biological brother in Miami. In 1973, Laura was one of four drug addicts murdered with her children as witnesses. Two year old Dexter and his older brother Brian sat in the pools of blood for two days before being found inside the shipping container. Experiencing this marked the end of their blissful childhoods and changed the courses of their lives. The first to find them in the mess was Laura’s boyfriend, Detective Harry Morgan. He decided Brian to be a lost cause but that Dexter was worth saving and as a result, Brian Moser was placed in a mental hospital and Dexter was placed with a new family. Only officially adopted at age 7, Dexter spent his years growing up with the Morgan family. During his time there, he grew close to Harry’s biological daughter, Debra Morgan. Neither of the Morgan kids knew the entire truth about Dexter’s biological parents since he repressed those memories for years. Soon enough Harry Morgan took notice of Dexter’s unique mindset and confronted him about it on an outing one day. The detective found bones of multiple animals, including a neighbor’s
However his attitude is very different when he meets Judy. At first he acts like a gentleman towards her, but after some time tries to control her in every aspect. He is only happy with Judy after she has done everything to change her appearance to resemble Madeline. When Judy says “The trouble is, I'm gone now. For you.
In “Winter Dreams”, Fitzgerald uses the thoughts and actions of Dexter to characterize him. When Dexter was young, he worked as a caddy at a golf course. While Dexter’s job was only for pocket money, it was something he loved; it was something he was good at. Though Dexter was a beloved caddy, the daughter of a prestigious club member, Judy Jones, treated Dexter cruelly. Judy’s actions led Dexter to turn to her father, Mortimer Jones.
The short story “Winter Dreams” was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and was first seen by anyone in December of 1922 when it appeared in Metropolitan Magazine. The story also illustrates many of the same themes as “The Great Gatsby,” the greatest novel in American history. “Winter Dreams” is about a young man named “Dexter” who has desires, but thinks the only way he can have them is if he is rich. His ambition gets the best of him when he strives for everything he cannot have. When unmasked to reality, your dreams can expire instantaneously.
For this reason Dexter’s pursuit of happiness has lead him to a job working for the Miami Police Department (Oh the irony!) giving the police force insight into the minds of the killers they are pursuing. When the case he’s working on gets a bit to personal Dexter decides to let loose and exploit his “killer instincts” to find, and ultimately murder, a serial killer. In this journal
Dexter idolizes those wealthy men and does everything possible to resemble rich men. For example, he asks the best tailor in America to make a suit for him. In sum, he becomes addicted to social prestige since he believes that happiness lies in it.
Character analysis of Judy in Winter Dreams Judy Jones is described as the “ideal woman” in Winter Dreams. She gains meaning by the attention that the men in her life give her. The men that she has been with in the past, have to conform to her standards, and change their lifestyle to go along with hers. Judy is a round character, she has many characteristics.
Dexter starts as a lower class and Judy starts as an upper class when they first interact. Expectations are assumed, such as the upper class sees the lower class as servants and the lower class sees upper class as ridiculous. When they meet in the middle, they conflict in their lower and upper classes. After Dexter leaves for college, Judy stays in the upper class and he slowly joins the upper class. When he comes back home, he and Judy interact and become friends. However, when Dexter realizes that Judy misuses him and treats him badly, he leaves her even though he loves her. Because he’s part of the upper class and is able to, Dexter goes to parties and clubs where he forgets about her and mingles with other high class members, eventually finding a fiancee named Irene Scheerer. Soon, Judy comes back looking for the Dexter, “I wish you’d marry me.” This is an example of collision between classes. Judy now recognizes how rich Dexter really is and wants him. After the war, Dexter is talking to a man named Delvin who mentions the wife of one of his friends, “‘Judy Simms,’ said Delvin with no particular interest; ‘Judy Jones she was once.’” Delvin mentions how he is sorry for her, which surprises Dexter. He is told Judy married into the lower class to a man who “drinks and runs around.” In Winter Dreams, the lower and upper class characters interact, meet, conflict, and soon split. Judy Jones and Dexter Green have
