Protect Our Ethics: The Choice between Freedom and Morality The United States is guided by strict, moral laws that attempt to keep America ethical in nature; however, the laws concerning censorship are not as strict as some citizens would like them to be. Some people do not know how censorship can help society, but “it is the restriction, absolute or merely to some part of the population, by the proper political authorities, of intellectual, literary, or artistic material in any formant” (Free), which can help keep provocative images to a minimum. He states that rape is not always provoked by sexual images, but by the yearning to have control over someone that is helpless. Sometimes men or women like to feel power and control which can lead to sexual aggression. Not only is a control and power factor of rape, but spreading a male’s genes is another (Link). Men want to know that their genes are going to live on even after they pass away. Although censoring the sexual images in the entertainment media takes away from the first amendment and the individuality of citizens, it lowers the sexual tendencies of Americans. Studies prove that provocative images increase the sexual tendencies of the viewer. Because of this heightened tendency, more sexually violent acts occur around the United States every day. Sexual images are not limited to the internet and radio; however, provocative images are found on the television during advertisements. Over thirty-seven thousand advertisements are shown each year through the television alone. “The power of advertising to persuade, manipulate, and shape behavior has long been recognized” (Kubasek). With a simple push of a button, a person can engage in viewing a sexual image.
