Protecting Our Ethics: The Choice Between Freedom and Morality

There are many ethical dilemmas that occur daily in our hospitals across the world. Not everyone agrees with standards and policies that are required in hospitals or even with the law. If not everyone obeys the law, ethical cases form. In Springfield, Missouri, a holistic nurse got fired for fighting against Cox South hospital policies. Carla Brock has been a nurse at Cox South hospital and not only refused the flu shot, but also refused to wear a mask. She refused due to religious beliefs, she gets short of breath while wearing the mask, and she feels the mask is meant to intimidate and humiliate those who refuse the shot. The ethical question in this case study is to decide if Carla should have been fired for not wearing a mask after refusing the flu shot and what are other potential proposals. The four-way method will separate out what are the truths, consequences, fairness, and character, of this ethical case study.

The United States of America seems to be protected by a very important historical document called the Constitution. Despite the fact that it was written and signed many years ago, the American people and their leaders still have faith in the Constitution. One of the major statements of the Constitution is the First Amendment, freedom of speech. Although it is difficult to decide what is offensive and what is not, it is clear to see that songs of rape, violence, bigotry, and songs containing four letter words are completely unnecessary for susceptible minds to acknowledge. In “Riding the Bull at Gilleys,” Scully and Marolla depict the psychopathological and the socio-cultural models of rape. The psychopathological model is a representation of what psychotherapist have used for years to explain the reasoning behind rape. With this model, rape is the result of an eccentric mental dysfunction, which symptoms include involuntary and uncontrollable sexual impulses. These sexual impulses may be temporary, repetitive, long lasting or brief. This model also implies that male sexual aggression is abnormal, therefore; psychologists do not seek any other rational explanation. Mainly, the psychopathological model ignores any correlational factors linking male sexual aggression to learned social behavior.

Censorship has evolved over time in America, from TV, books, and even the internet. America has prohibited specific things from citizen’s beliefs. The role that censorship plays in America is taken from personal beliefs, such as voting for certain things to be banned from books, TV, internet, and articles. This allows and denies things that are used for public use, due to personal preferences on things that are appropriate and inappropriate for public users.

Music censorship is the editing and cutting of specific words or phrases for a purpose in order to bound distinct subject matter from young minds and to prevent more wrongdoings in the inferior generations. The problem with censorship isn't just the reigns on the free mind, but on what the mind can bestow as a gift to others. Music serves more than just as a means of entertainment. Music conveys messages to the world, and professes problems that are puzzling to deliberate with parents. The bad thing about censoring music is the fact that our right to expression is denounced by other people uncomfortable with certain musical topics (Lombardo, 2017). Censorship is meant to mask certain words and phrases from younger audiences as to not warp young minds into thinking that doing drugs, drinking and suicide are acceptable (Lombardo, 2017).

Today, censorship is in place in more ways than you can imagine. As mentioned previously, movies, music, television, and more are filtered one way or another. Some people go to such lengths as illegal means of spreading materials deemed inappropriate for a certain viewing audience.

Much of America’s censorship has seen specific targets in what has been chosen to be censored. A wondrous example would be the foreign metal-pop influence band, Rammstein. A number of their songs were banned from television, or were not permitted to play on daytime airtimes.(Rammstein) An example of one of their songs banned, is a track that’s titled “Ich Will.” When this track’s name is translated to english, it reads “I want.” The video accompanying the song portrays the band committing crimes of terrorism, then later receiving airtime for their behaviour. Politicians actually moved to have the video and song banned from the US on account of the behaviour shown in the video.(Rammstein) References of bands being dis-promoted for their portrayals in lyrics and video accompaniments go on for ages. A short list of examples of songs/ artists that saw censorship in newer music consists of “Tell Me Baby, (RHCP),” also “Killing in the Name of, (Rage Against the Machine)” and “Closer, (NIN)”

Although the first amendment prohibits the government from hindering out freedom of speech, radio stations and private companies can still regulate music. Contrary to popular belief, censorship of music is completely legal. There are currently no laws regarding the censorship of music. Music censorship can take many forms, such as parental advisory labels, banned concerts, and banned cover art, rating systems, legislative bills or laws, ad banned merchandise. Censorship in music has been a major problem plaguing America since the early nineteen forties. It came to a head during the nineteen sixties with the Vietnam War and the hippie movement. During the nineteen seventies and eighties heavy metal and hard rock were getting the brunt of the censorship heat. Now in the nineteen nineties the major focus of censorship is rap; primarily gangster rap. Some of the main factors of music in general that cause legal ramifications are sexual content, suggestive violence and obscene language. Censorship is an attack against our first amendment right guaranteeing the freedom of speech. However if a song or album is deemed obscene the first amendment does not protect this.

“Censorship, like charity should begin at home; but unlike charity, it should end there,” is a quote by Clare Boothe Luce (Fitzhenry, 84). Some parents are against the censorship of music. They believe that they should raise their kids, not some politicians who believe one nasty word will change a whole child’s future.

Sexualization of females has always been a problem. Many of the commercials from the 60’s to the 2000’s depict women as nothing more than sexual beings to sell a product. We often see commercials that deal nothing with the topic of sex use it as a means of a way to sell products. In my presentation I used two videos one with Paris HIlton and the other with Scarlett Johannson. They each are advertising two well known companies one fast food restaurant and the other a well known appliance. In my essay I will explain how sexuality in media affects adolescents, the percentage between men and women being sexualized and the affect it has on young girls.

Technologies evolve, but sex and violence have always been and remain hot button issues in the media. The pace of the new technological change can be so great that we can no longer wait on formal media effects research to guide our personal decisions. There have been many changes that have been taken place with media sex and violence today since I was a child. I believe that the media technologies have increased the negative effects of sex and violence on children and adults today. Since birth human behaviour is influenced by what the individual sees and there surroundings, this influence is greatest at a young age and fades as the individual grows in age, but never completely goes away.
