Proving Pangaea Existence Proven

In 1596- Abraham Ortelius took note that the coastlines of the continents seemed to be too fitting together. He initiated a theory that stated that the continents were probably joined at one point in time and were torn apart between Europe and Africa. In the year of 1912, Alfred Wegener stated that the continents were once joined in a supercontinent called Pangea.

Have you ever thought of the idea that the continents were once connected? Scientists believe that around 300 million years ago the seven continents we know today were once connected to each other to form one massive continent called Pangea. There is a lot of evidence that supports this idea. First of all, some continents have coastlines that would fit together like puzzle pieces. Secondly, there have been almost identical fossils found on different continents separated by miles of ocean. Lastly, similar glacier deposits are on four different continents.

For over a century, paleontologists have been collecting abundant dinosaur fossils from the Western Interior of North America, with many of these fossils found in rocks dating back to the final stages of the Cretaceous Period. Only recently, however, have we learned that most of these dinosaurs existed on a “lost continent” today referred to as ‘Laramidia”. (Switek, 2010)

If a modern Pangea were to happen, the world would be different and it would affect many interactions. Objects in the world would be displaced. Other factors that might change may be the government, economies, societies and immigration. The relations between countries and continents would change as well. If all the continents were to collide into one supercontinent, things would have to change. These changes would be both positive and negative. Modern Pangea would be a very different place than it is today due to animals, transportation, and daily life.

As we all know, the founder of the North America and South America is a voyager whose name is Christopher Columbus. After having read the story of the famous merchant-Marco Polo, he became to looking forward to the land of wealthy and mystery-China. He believed that the earth is round so he decided to sailed west from Europe, then he would reach the Asia. But he didn’t land on the land of the China, he found the new land instead. After he found the America, there are lots of common on his discovery. Then they divided to the different opinion, the positive and the negative.

Pannotia was short lived for a supercontinent as the collisions that formed it were glancing and hence not so binding as they were for Rodinia. It lasted a mere 60 million years.

The earth is constantly changing and moving. That is why I believe in 1 million years that South America and Africa will be far, far apart. I know this because of plate movement. In the Geochronology map it shows that when plates spread a part which is a divergent boundary, then as magma heats and cools, new sea floor is created and the old sea is pushed out with the continents. This shows that the plates will keep spreading and causing the new ocean floor to be their and the more the plates spread the more the continents spread then eventually they hit each other forming like another Pangea.
