I would disagree with the statement that "A prudent fire chief steers clear of politics.” All fire departments run on some kind of funding. Without the proper funding then the department either cannot adequately staff apparatus or are forced to cut back in response abilities or additional programs and personnel. Money for funding often comes from the political area and government programs. This is just one of the crucial reasons that "A prudent fire chief" would actually in fact be well involved in politics, creating relationships with individuals that could grow to be influential in decision making. In addition, to overseeing all operational aspects of the department, a chief is a representative of the department
On the night of October 8, 1871 at 9:00pm, a horrible fire broke loose. Very dry weather, leaving the ground dry, the wooden city vulnerable. The abundance of wooden buildings a fire started in a barn, outside in Chicago behind the home of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary at 13 Dekoven street. The Great Chicago Fire people are saying was caused by the cow of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary kicked a lantern. No one really doesn’t know how this great fire was started but some theories say humans or a matador caused this fire.
On October 8, 1871, the infamous Chicago Fire ignited. Although the origins remain unexplainable, the ending result left Chicago in a catastrophic mess. Roughly 300 people died and 17,450 buildings received mass amounts of damage during the fire. Over ⅓ of the city appeared lost in ruins and polluted rivers burst into flames. In addition, the city paid an estimated two hundred million dollars in repairs.
The Chicago fire was a huge part of our history. We can never forget about the Chicago fire because it changed how some people lived. The Chicago fire affected people in many ways. Many people had an idea about how the fire started, where it started and who caused it. It took years to rebuild what had been destroyed, the effect of the chicago fire was remarkable.
Continuing with the theme pf department promotional processes, Michael High’s presentation, Promotional Process, provided a glimpse into the North Star Volunteer Fire Department (NSVFD). His evaluation of the promotional process showed that the overall process was the same for paid and volunteer members. Interestingly the fire department has used career positions to develop a core staffing consisting of some lower level position, but mostly staffing officer level positions. Their promotional process is largely based on time served in a current position and educational requirements for the promotional position. These requirements were described to be listed in the department’s Standard Operating Procedures. It was Michael’s presentation that
Matthew E. Barnes was a firefighter who could be called many things including a hero, a friend, a husband, a father and even an angel. The story begins like many 9/11 stories do, with the planes being hijacked, he was one of the men working that day in the New York City Fire Department that would go into the World Trade Center, but would never come out. The 37-year old resident of Monroe, New York was a father to three boys and the husband to Ms. Susan Barnes; he would spend all his available time with his family, somehow slipping out of chores and such just to go fishing with his boys. Two years before the 9/11 he had saved two twins, Isabella and Jacob Kalodner from a fire in their mother, Linda Kalodner’s apartment, by climbing up a 100-foot aerial ladder to the 10th story to save the 6 week old twins.
Truly the Fire Chief should not be involved with the Union contract negotiations for two reasons. First being, that the Chief is not represented by the union, nor is their contract follow the provision that are a result of negotiations by the union and city. Being a salaried employee of the city, the Chief negotiates their own contract and is responsible to abide to the provisions of the contract. Which if negotiated could include language that excepts the Chief from participating on either side of the contact negotiations. Secondly, the Fire Chief is a representative of the department and its personnel, so for the Chief to be on the side of the city or locality. This could cause conflict within the department ranks and create a situation where
On or 6/17 the CIW Fire Dept was down to 2 “trained inmates” Leaving us 3/0 Staffed . Fire Chief Joel Johnson had the CIW Fire Department start doubling up fire captains on 6/20. The rising number of high severity wildfires in California has significant ecological, economic, and health impacts. Many western American forests are adapted to frequent low severity fires. However, the majority of these forests, and particularly the mixed conifer forests of California, are not adapted to high intensity fires and do not possess fire resistance adaptations such as serotinous cones to protect seeds. Consequently, high severity fires have significant negative impacts on California forests, and the absence of low severity fires has considerably altered many fundamental ecosystem processes (Miller et al. 2008). Prior to 1900, low severity fires would burn every 6-15 years. Low severity fires are generally non-lethal, have minimal change to the overstory, and kill mainly small trees. In the past, these fires were started naturally by lightning, or by Native Americans who used low severity fires to manage the forests.
In 1957 the National Association of Fire Chiefs made the recommendation to use a single number to report fires within a community. Approximately 10 years later in 1967 the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice made the same recommendation that a single number should be used to report all emergency situations and it should be used across the entire nation. This recommendations were made because prior to the 911 system citizens in communities across the country were forced to dial a specific seven digit number in order to reach the providers of fire and law enforcement services within their communities to report an emergency. Then following, these recommendations
The city of London was a place of prosperity, a city that connected many people to others from around the world was a little more dangerous than people were lead on to believe. On Saturday, September 16, a scorching fire of flaming hot cheetos erupted in Taffadilia, WA at, as local officials believe, approximately 8:15 PM. This devastating fire has destroyed the homes of many pitiful townspeople such as Carl Crackerjack, Pauline Picklestein, Jennifer Juiceman, and Sam Sausager. This daunting fire stripped these poor people of their homes and belongings, rendering them penniless with nothing but the clothes on their backs’ and the depressing remains of what they once had.
The Chicago Fire have just lost their 4th straight MLS game, losing to a tired D.C United 1-0 at home. It’s put the team into dead last of the league standings, and 5 games below .500. Since the East is so bad, Chicago is only 6 points off of a playoff spot, but they have a lot of work to do if they want to catch up. In past years, the Fire just haven’t had players that were good enough. This season is different, however. Chicago has players of top quality, like Accam, Shipp and Maloney. The issue is with coaching.
