My acceptance into the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program became one of my greatest experiences at North County High School. Throughout my STEM classes, I had learned to think more critically and creatively. STEM required us to collaborate to solve problems. This collaboration taught me proper communication and strong leadership skills which I utilized effectively during summer bridge projects and the community challenge projects that we did each year. One of the most significant community challenge projects that I did with a partner was design and print, using a 3-D printer provided from my school to create a cookie cutting prototype that helped modernize the production of cookies for a local bakery owner. First of all, when I first saw the building, I felt the school was only for medical people, and that it wasn’t going to have the best school environment. However, when I entered the building, I saw a world filled with open doors. I found the teachers to be as nice as pie, as well as to be quite educated, in their respective subjects. I also found that many of the students, who were applying here, came from my old school. I even met many new friends, and it all brought me happiness.

To participate and enter the field of STEM, students must have an adequate accumulation of knowledge from their K-12 schooling. Students that consider majoring in the STEM field prepare themselves in high school by taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses specifically in math and science. Therefore, the development of basic math and science skills gained in school (K-12) is crucial for a student that desires to pursue a STEM major in college. In high school, students are allowed and given the opportunity to take certain classes that interest them or correlate to their learning speed. Ideally, high school shapes the students’ educational opportunities and interests through their course offerings and most importantly, access to AP math or science courses.

High School is a big milestone for me, I’ve been at Villa Montessori for all eleven years of my education. I want to find a high school that follows the guidelines Villa has taught me, and furthermore find the superior high school that suits me. When I went to shadow day, I observed how involved and friendly everyone was on campus. Plus the students were being taught, and how interesting the campus and classrooms were to me. Now that I am searching for a high school, I am looking for one with a system similar to Villa’s, strong education and nice people, and opportunities that allow me to contribute to the school.

As an eight year old I would have never imagined all the memories I would make at Cranbury School. I was a nervous wreck when I moved here, wishing to return home to Washington everyday. I hadn’t met anyone or done anything yet, but it was a new place, and that is always scary. Inevitably, I met new people. I found good friends, welcoming teachers, and interesting activities. After a couple of days of attending this school my heart adjusted to the likings of learning. I would have a two hour bus ride going to school and back. After getting over just how amazing the layout and environment of this school was, I was able to finally start observing how the interactions and instruction is implemented in this school. Coming from a STEM focused high school I believe STEM is a very important educational tool to be implemented in the school systems and the earlier the introduction of the STEM teaching the better. I graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines, Hoover is the leading STEM school in the state of Iowa (DMPS, 2015). Hoover has now set up new classrooms and classes that are focused only on STEM learning and they excel at the teaching of STEM.
