I was working late, which is usual since I work at an outdoor theater. The show had just ended and the crew was changing the set over for the show being performed the next day. I was asked to run up to one of the storage containers and find some props from the previous year for another theater asking to borrow it. The lights only reach the larger, main room. I searched that area first. I went around the row of cars and 4 wheelers, but the box wasn’t there. The other side of the room had all of the Christmas decorations and a horse carriage, but I was unable to find the box I was looking for there either. The only place left to look was a small area in the back sectioned off by a boards nailed up into a makeshift room. A little light spilled through the door, but racks of costumes at the entrance absorbed all of the light. After fighting my way through the dusty clothes, I found myself in dark too thick to make out the boxes in front of me. The Wnad-Lighting Charm was perfect for my situation. I believe that my product was a success and would make a difference in the cold weather in the winter. This product may be able to save lives or at least will save them from the cold. This problem relates to my problem statement because there are so many people out there that have no homes and if I could replicate my product a hundred times this problem would just about be fixed but I don't have enough money to do that.

During the reading for part 2, I found the “duh” portion interesting and useful when used carefully. Arguing that the information is not new could help discredit your opposition, however, this tactic is useless when that is your only disagreement. Expressing that the information has been discovered before, when you agree with everything else the speaker says, seems like an unnecessary comment. Does the information being discovered before influence the authors information? The “twist it” section was incredibly helpful. By taking a piece of evidence that was used in your opponent’s argument and using it to support your argument helps validate your stance. It’s like using their weight against them.

After reading through the chapter on the DMIS stages (denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration), I would say that personally, I fall under the “acceptance” stage. “This stage represents an individual’s ability to recognize and appreciate cultural difference in terms of both people’s values and their behavior” (Cushner, McClelland, Safford, Pg. 152). As it states, the individual experiencing acceptance is “beginning to demonstrate the ability to interpret phenomena within a cultural context”, I believe that this is a fitting sentence for myself. Being that I am from a rural prairie town in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma, and the only people where I lived were other Senecas like my family and friends, I did not experience a cultural shock until I was in the sixth grade and had moved to Florida. In this town in Oklahoma, it was rare to even see someone described as “white”, as racial prejudice is still rampant throughout Oklahoma against Natives and basically, everybody who isn’t. I was taught to be accepting and welcoming throughout my life, and I believe that made the transition into a new cultural system much easier.
