In psychology are different theoretical approach of understanding the human behaviour. The focus here is on the psychodynamic perspective of Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a therapeutic method used in unlocking the mind by unlocking the subconscious, it is also often known as the talking cure. The aim of the therapy is to re-establish a harmonious relationship between the id, ego and super-ego. For us to understand Freud’s perspective, we must look at the structural model and psychosexual stages that he believed to be the driving forces that influences the human behaviour. Freud believed that we have a multilateral mental mechanism that consists of the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. The Id is based on the pleasure principle supplying strength for the development of mental life. The Ego is on the reality principle. It gains control over the primitive demands of the Id while taking in consideration the reality of the situation. At this stage, young adults are beginning to question the values and belief systems of the family, making their own choices. Freud claimed that unconscious drives are often in conflict with one another and are the cause of mental disorders. Our mind uses several defence mechanisms; they are unconscious methods of preventing repressed wishes associated with some real or imagined threat from rising into consciousness, often by denying or distorting some aspect of reality. It enables us to reach compromise solutions to problems we are unable to resolve any other way.
