There are four major personality theories: psychodynamic, trait, humanistic, and social-cognitive. The psychodynamic theory focuses on the role of the unconscious mind in the development of personality. The humanistic theory focuses on the role of each person’s conscious life experiences and choices in personality development. The social-cognitive theory emphasizes the importance of both learning and cognitive processes play an important role in personality. Whereas, the trait theory is more concerned with the end result of personality as well as the characteristics themselves. Rogers believed that humans are always striving to fulfill their innate capacities thus leading to self-concept and self-actualization. Self concept is based on and individual’s view of his or her real self and ideal self and is one of the main focuses in the humanistic theory. Other focuses in this theory are the consideration of a person as a whole, and the potential for positive life. Advantages to the humanistic theory include bringing attention to the positive aspects of humans and focusing on growth. This theory consists of broad, long-lasting dispositions that can be assessed. The five-factor model consists of representations of the core description of human personality, the only dimensions necessary to understand what makes us tick. The “Big Five” in the model are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The advantages of this theory are being able to identify personality traits using assessments and questionnaires as a more reliable method of assessing personality.
