Psychological Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
Broach and Datillo (1996) states that there is a lack of literature regarding the psychological results of aquatic therapy. Improvements in the areas of body image, self-concept and mood are common. Aquatic therapy is beneficial in the treatment and prevention of depression. If depression decreases than mood will most likely be enhanced by aquatic therapy. Becker (2009) states, aquatic therapy has shown to reduce anxiety as well as promote relaxation. A child with ASD could benefit from lower anxiety levels. Learning how to swim may promote greater confidence in children (Franken et al., 2013; Chang et al., 2014) An increase in confidence can impact a client’s motivation in the water. The psychological benefits of aquatic therapy are only beginning to be uncovered.
Aquatic Therapy and Children with ASD Aquatic therapy has not been researched many times in the occupational therapy field. Individuals who can benefit from aquatic therapy may have problems with sensory processing, sensory regulation, and de-conditioning (Broach & Datillo, 1996). Problems such as the ones mentioned above can be the result of a developmental delay, autism, and other conditions. Tony Attwood (1996) acknowledged the role aquatic therapy plays on children with ASD. He suggests that swimming is possible and children with ASD have the abilities to swim. Swimming may be easier and more possible than other movement activities for children with ASD.
