Students that desire to pursue a career in psychological therapy need to be focused individuals and they need to be willing to put in the work that needs to be done. I'm talking to students that are willing to do a lot of reading because in order to pursue this career you have to learn about people and how there feelings and emotions work. Student you don't need to be shy to ask a question because no question is a stupid question. That is the only way your teacher will know how to help you it is pointless to sit there in the classroom and not ask questions it is apart of learning. You also want to make sure that your GPA is not to low it needs to be least a 3.0 or higher maybe a little bit higher in order for you to get into any good colleges …show more content…

Then earn a Doctoral degree as a Doctor of Psychology or Psy.D that requires 2-3 of advanced coursework and a 1-3 years dissertation. It is important for this program to be accredited by the American Psychological Association. This is also the time to begin some type of experience by taking a 1-year full-time internship. Next, one would have to complete a Post-doctoral Internship which is a “ placement to gain the experiences necessary for a license” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). After this it is time to obtain your License by passing the examination for Professional Practice of Psychology and depending on what state you live in, an ethics examination as well. One might think their almost to the finish line but after this there is still education requirements needed like “20 hours of continuing education per year, or 40 hours every two years” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). Finally obtain a Specialty Certification if the psychologist has a specific focus
My personal and educational experiences have influenced my desire in pursuing my degree in Marriage & Family Therapy. My last semester of college, I was interning at Care Fresno. During this time, I lived in a high crime apartment located in southeast Fresno. I was able to reach out and mentor at risk families. This experience has equipped me with skills, such as: be able to empathize, communicate, and lead other effectively. After I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree, I started working as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor at Aegis Treatment Centers. While at Aegis Treatment Centers, I realized how much I enjoy providing empathy, psycho-educating, and teaching individuals how to cope with their emotions.
Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. Ultimately, this course allows me to change the lives of people and obtain my goals. The course prepares me for employment as a professional clinician, and grants me the ability to continue the promotion of well-being.
Extensive schooling, mental and emotional preparation, and personal dedication are the aspects required to becoming successful in this career. Psychology is a hard study to master, and depending on what field of psychology a person may want to go into can make the task even more
I have chosen to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling at this particular time in my life because I would like to learn the skills needed to help people with their life and mental health issues. While attending the University of Saint Joseph during my undergraduate years I took various courses that have led me to making my decision. The courses I took focused on business, biology, social work, and psychology. After graduation I decided to take a year off and gain work experience in customer service and health care. I wanted to experience working with the people in my community. I was hired as a pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Vernon. Working as a pharmacy technician has been a very rewarding experience for me and I learned a lot about people and their unique needs. I also learned about patient care and how to be pacient and understanding under stressful situations.
My passion and determination to undertake study within the mental health sector dwells from the insight I have been privileged to gain in my current role as a link care coordinator, working with people who suffer from a range of ailments within the mental health spectrum; from learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, OCD, Autism to name but a few.
My name is Courtney Torok and I am currently a senior here at Kennesaw State University. I am graduating this December with a degree in psychology. I am originally from Michigan and moved down here to Georgia with my family just before starting at Kennesaw State University. I started off majoring in chemistry with the intent of applying to some kind of medical program, but eventually found that my passion was psychology. I have always wanted to work in the “helping” field. After graduating, I plan on applying to graduate school for school psychology programs where I will earn both my Master of Science in School Psychology and Specialist in School Psychology degrees. Ideally, I would love to be accepted into a graduate school in Florida, as
Becoming a mental health counselor wasn't an easy decision to come about. Hard to become prior to choosing to be a mental health counselor I have a desire to be a special-education teacher, specialize in working with children on the asperger's spectrum of autism. The reason I decided to choose to change my professional goals was because I thought as a counselor I will be able to work with children on different disabilities and adults on a one-to-one basis. Dream experience as a preschool teacher, many colleges have said that I have a sense of counseling and understanding when dealing with children and people. My previous class prior to this class give me a better understanding of what my goals are and how to reach them. So I truly believe
In my current profession, as a Targeted Case Manager for the Mental Health Center, I work with a number of human services programs. Such as, Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, SSDI, TANF, WIC, HRDC, LIEAP, Housing Authority, OPA, Family Service, Salvation Army, Harvest Church and Chase Hawks. I am responsible for assisting, advocating and linking my clients to resources that enhance and stabilize their lifestyle. I assist my clients with paperwork, advocating with community agencies, applying for resources, maintaining their current benefits, and assisting in obtaining Social Security. Whether, that be the initial application, subsequent paperwork, attending the clients hearing, and/or linking them with a lawyer to assist in the appeals process.
Through the last two years as a student at Manchester Community College, I have been able to experience numerous classes and meet wonderful professors. In my first semester of college, I decide to take a general psychology class with Dr. Francine Rosselli-Navarra. She taught me that psychology is a science, which studies our minds and behaviors. After that class I knew that I did not just want to study the physical feature of the brain and the brain process, but how the interactions with and within our brains that produce our cognitive functions. After completing that psychology class I realized that I did not wish to be a biology major anymore, instead I wished to study in the field of Neuroscience, which is a combination of both biology and psychology.
It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
I have always been thrilled by what goes around in people’s minds, but it was at the age of fifteen that I was first attracted to the field of psychology and particularly to clinical psychology. It was mainly because I read my favorite book When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin Yalom. This novel had a personal impact on me, as someone I know was dealing with depression, migraines, insecurities and suicidal tendencies same as happens so in the book’s characters.
When I find something that I am passionate about, I will begin to research and find resources to embed this passion into my everyday life. I’ve done this by following blogs that post things about psychology (such as “Psych2go”,”all about psychology” and “psychofactz”), deliberately gone to the sections in bookstores that provide insight into the subject, and read “The UCAS Guide to getting into Psychology” to make sure that I had all the information needed and could make an informed decision about what I want to study. I understand that Psychology is a demanding course but I believe that I can stay focused on the course throughout its entire duration. I know this because of the dedication I’ve put into my extracurricular such as my six years of classical guitar studies, my bronze, silver and gold International Awards and my four years of yearbook, two of which I have been co-editor-in-chief. These extracurriculars have taught me to be realistic about my limitations as an individual and as a student, to be independent about my studies, but still ask for help when required, and most importantly to: observe, analyze and to understand that the best course of actions often differs depending on the situation. With yearbook specifically, I have learnt to listen to my peers and to work hard to make sure everyone feels like their opinion is valid and to make our deadlines. By doing the International Baccalaureate I have learned to self-improve, to be pensive and to be a critical
Personal Statement Growing up in a traditional Chinese family with my maternal grandfather being a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor and my mother being a Cardiologist, I became interested in and curious about the distinct Eastern and Western ways treating patients ever since I was a child. I first heard of Psychology and mental health from my primary school mental health teacher, and I was immediately attracted by the introduction to a psychological counseling room in my primary school, where the teacher showed us some movies and interesting facts about psychology. Since then I started to wonder how magically Psychology works to relieve people’s mental problem and improve their physical wellbeing. I have read many TCM books from my grandfather’s collection with special interest in understanding the TCM ways for treating people who have mental illness and the theories behind the treatments. With also strong interest in understanding the Western thinking of doing research and treating patients, I had numerous talks with my mother on the research
After completing the pathway assignment, I gained knowledge and understanding on the types of pathway, my own interest, and the pathways that I choose to go into. I believe that a psychiatrist is the career that best represents my learning skills, my interest, my true colour and my personality. Therefore, I aim to go towards the university and the medical school route to enhance my education towards psychology. A psychiatrist works towards the psychology and health science fields.
