Psychologist Career Progression

If I was pursuing a career in psychology I would much rather work outside of an academic setting. Only because If I was to relate this to the job that I am choosing for the future. You see I am going to get my bachelors in elementary education and getting my masters in occupational therapy. Therefore, developmental psychology would be for me. "Most of developmental psychologist work in government agencies to help assess, evaluate and treat individuals suffering from developmental disabilities." Before postgraduate work can be started, the student must receive a bachelor’s in psychology and fulfill the requirements listed for the psychology program they wish to enter. Once a bachelor’s degree is achieved, a psychology major has the choice of either obtaining their master's or their doctorate. When earning a master’s a student is accepted into the college of his or her choice, and usually completes the program within 2 years, or longer. If a master's is earned, the student may go on to become an assistant in a clinical setting underneath someone who has a doctorate in psychology, but they will not be able to do any high level of work. If a student chooses to obtain a doctorate they are again, accepted into the program of their choice, although admission is very competitive. Once accepted into the doctorate program the student serves about 2-4 years where they receive training and guidance in a hospital setting, but it all depends on the program they enter. Having a doctorate in psychology will open the doors for soon-to-be clinical psychologists, and offers a higher job title, certification, and higher pay. I feel that the Duquesne Psychology program has helped me prepare for careers or graduate school in relevant fields, though there could be some improvements. As a sophomore in college, I have a good idea what my current career goal is, related to my major in psychology, and how I think an internship will help me reach this goal. My overall career goal, or dream, is to combine my love and passion for music with my desire to help people. Research experience at the undergraduate level will help me in the graduate level. Then, I could possibly join professional organizations as a student. Next, I would complete degree requirements and practicum courses. After that, find possible internships. Then, I would train for a full year under adult supervision. Although I have many goals I want to achieve to becoming a School Psychologist, I’ve also gain some new goals to help me. I’ve decided that I should have more goals to help me achieve my dreams. After university study has been completed you must apply to a recognised medical school within Australia that offers a Psychiatry course, this will take 4 years to complete, two of which are a residency at a Psychiatry clinic were you will obtain work expleriance. It should be noted that all medical schools are very hard to obtgain admission into, due to the sheer amount of applicants. This means that it may take years to be accepted into the college. To become a psychiatrist you must be very commited to the field of work, as it will take 10 years of study to become one, which may become wasted time if the oerson is not commited.
