According to the American Psychological Association (APA) website “Psychologists who provide clinical or counseling services assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They integrate the science of psychology and the treatment of complex human problems with the intention of promoting change.” ("Pursuing A Career In Clinical Or Counseling Psychology", 2014).) In the simplest terms, “the study of individuals, by observation or experimentation, with the intention of promoting change.” (Compas, Bruce, & Gotlib, 2002) Clinical psychologist careers vary in industries such as research, integrated health care, teaching, public policy and professional practice. Some clinical psychologists work exclusively on specific mental, emotional, and behavioral issues. Relationship conflict and conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction are a few examples of areas of specialization for a clinical psychologist. I feel that the Duquesne Psychology program has helped me prepare for careers or graduate school in relevant fields, though there could be some improvements. As an individual who is interested in two fields, one being Integrated Marketing Communications, this leaves me with a lot of possible career paths after university. The area of specialization in psychology that interests me the most is clinical psychology. Clinical psychologists treat and diagnose persons with behavioral and physical problems. They discuss with their patients the treatments for their illness. Clinical psychologists also write confidential reports of their clients to review if they are getting healthier or unhealthier. Clinical psychologists create a relationship with their patient and set up goals to motivate them to get better. With just a psychology degree you can work as a mental health assistant, you will not be able to diagnose, but you can be a counselor. Also, they can have a business career by being a salesperson or working in customer service.

I believe that optimism is a value I hold that will help me in my career as a Forensic/Criminal Psychologist.

The masters degree in psychology requires at least two years of full-time graduate study and usually includes practical experience in an applied setting and a thesis based on personal research that is original. Getting accepted into graduate programs for psychology can be full of competition. School psychologists must meet credential and licensing requirements for individual states. These vary state by state. The licensing varies by type of position and is based on professional competence through training and experience. Some states require continuing education for renewal of licenses. According to Landrum and Davis (2009) “right now twenty-nine states recognize the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) designation on a national level” (p.73). Credentials transfer from state to state in this case and new credential exams do not have to be taken when moving from one of these states to another. Requirements for the NCSP include completion of sixty graduate semester hours in school psychology, a twelve hundred hour internship (six hundred hours in school setting), and a passing score on the National School Psychology exam.

In order to be successful in this specific career, I must take a college prep curriculum in high school. Next, complete undergraduate requirements and maintain high grades. Research experience at the undergraduate level will help me in the graduate level. Then, I could possibly join professional organizations as a student. Next, I would complete degree requirements and practicum courses. After that, find possible internships. Then, I would train for a full year under adult supervision. Finally, "pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. Many states also require an oral examination. Criminal background checks and references are other common requirements" (). Although I have many goals I want to achieve to becoming a School Psychologist, I’ve also gain some new goals to help me. I’ve decided that I should have more goals to help me achieve my dreams. One of the goals I have is to be active in college to help me later on in the future. Since there is a lot of volunteering and working with children on campus, I’ve decided that I will be applying for the Autism center. It can help give me good experiences that will benefit me while applying for other places. It also will be a lot easier for me when applying to a master’s program right after I get my bachelor degree. Before postgraduate work can be started, the student must receive a bachelor’s in psychology and fulfill the requirements listed for the psychology program they wish to enter. Once a bachelor’s degree is achieved, a psychology major has the choice of either obtaining their master's or their doctorate.
