My interest in psychology dates back to my years in high school. I often found myself in positions were individuals I interact with felt comfortable opening up to me. However, for a long time I did not understand why. I received the opportunity to volunteer as a staff member for a weekend long high school retreat that is ran by a nonprofit organization called Operation Snowball. The mission of this program was to foster “a community of caring” by promoting awareness of substance use, safe sex, and diversity. That exposure sparked my interest in neuroscience. Furthermore, as a member of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate program I have gained research experience in the field of public health. I have presented research on the challenges faced by peer educators when facilitating sexual health interventions among incoming Black college students. As well as, presenting research on the assessment of peer educators’ sexual health knowledge before and after their facilitation of a sexual health intervention to incoming Black college students. As a result of such exposure I began to understand racial health disparities that often involves high risk behaviors, and its relations to psychology and biology. Through this understanding I gained an interest in interdisciplinary studies that combines my experience and passion for psychology, neuroscience, and public
