I am interested in public health because it is an interdisciplinary field that can have a powerful impact in the lives of people at the local, national, and global level. As a public health scholar, I had the opportunity to explore many of the public health settings (e.g., government, academia, school etc.) However, even with a background in the field—especially in chronic disease prevention and vulnerable populations—I have a lack of public health experience with community health centers. Thus, I decided to contact others who are working in community health centers. Ms. Alexis Thompson, an employee of the agency, has encouraged me to apply for the internship because the experience would help me gain the skills that I need in order to be involved in health screening; program planning and evaluation; and data collection and analysis. …show more content…
As a result, myriad opportunities have surfaced for future public health leaders in advancing new research in health disparities and chronic disease prevention, developing new health policies, and advancing public health practice in Haiti. After being exposed to public health as an undergraduate and through an intensive summer public health program with Columbia University Medical Center, I realized that it is my duty to make a contribution to my country’s health. In addition, I am uniquely qualified to implement public health programs and provide basic access to health care for the people in my community and other vulnerable populations. Thus, if selected for an internship with HRTP, I will be able to apply the practical skills needed in the areas of chronic disease prevention; furthermore, I hope to acquire the skills on how to conduct a comprehensive health assessment such
For this past week, I was an intern for Week 7 of the Harvard Medical School MEDscience Summer Program which offers a total of nine sessions of a week-long summer medical intensives for high school students. 13 students passionate about science, medicine, and healthcare come together from all over the country and even Canada to take advantage of the unique opportunities MEDscience offers. In general, there are very few medical programs in the country gear towards high school students whether it be because of age and education level, laws and hospital policy, or costs. Most of the medicine-related summer programs you can find for high school students are those in which you’d sit in a classroom all day and learn what you could have learned
The Health Science Scholars is a program that is full of opportunities for students looking to go into the health field such as myself. I personally have a drive to learn about public health and medicine in general. I have an interest in doing research and I feel as if the Health Science Scholars program will allow me do to so. I specifically have an interest in doing research in mental health, as I know mental illnesses and healthcare are an extremely complex and prevalent issue in today’s world. HSS would give me the opportunity to do research and work closely with faculty members since UT-Austin has an abundance of resources and research projects that do diverse studies such as the Texas Institute for Mental Health. I am interested in learning
I want to attend Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the dental hygiene major because I want to change the way people view their own personal set teeth. My personal fascination of the bone structure started when I lost my first tooth and the only person there to calm me down was my aunt Deena who was a budding dental hygienist at the time. After she made me clean my slightly bloody mouth, I remember her sitting me down and showing me a tiny white object that was wrapped up in tissue paper. Imagine me frowning at the fallen tooth; I wasn’t quite happy with it because I felt like it had abandoned me. When I expressed this thought to my aunt, she only smiled and let me hold the tooth. At that moment, I think I became enchanted with it and vowed to gain as much knowledge as I can about the tooth and how to care for the rest that rested in my mouth.
While interacting with current medical students pursuing the MD/MPH dual degree at a UTHSCSA student panel, I realized that obtaining an MPH would align greatly with my interests and career goals, allowing me to expand the scope of my medical education and enhance my critical thinking skills. I enjoy how public health combines various aspects needed to treat disease and improve health outcomes, and I know that integrating the MPH core concepts with my medical degree, will help me to become a well-rounded and better physician who approaches healthcare through both an individual and population-based perspective. An education in public health will provide me with various opportunities ranging from the creation and development of community health projects, to contributing to the modification of current health policies. I will seize the opportunity to work with professionals from all occupations including educators, clinicians, executives, and I will become an advocate and a credible voice for positive change through a better understanding of the healthcare system that is in place
For my internship, I served under the Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh, PA. I served as the National Health Corps Member for the Women, Infants, and Children Program as their Care Coordinator for all nine offices. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition agency that targets pregnant and postpartum women and young children ages 5 and under who are at risk of malnutrition. My supervisor Annie Nagy along with my mentors in the office made sure I was able to receive all of the materials and resources I would need to have a complete and successful internship.
The Public Health Associate Program would help me fulfill these goals by providing a unique on-the-job experience and competency development so that I could successfully fill a role in public health, management or community development in the future. In reviewing the program’s curriculum domains and competencies,
She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor in Science, majoring in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. After graduation on 2010, she came to Pittsburgh to become part of the University of Pittsburgh Intramural Research Award (UPIRTA) post baccalaureate program. During her year as a post- baccalaureate student, she inquired the gratifying world of Public Health. Her keen interest for public service led her to pursue a Master's in Public Health (MPH) in Infectious Disease Management, Intervention and Community Practice with a Certificate in Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response. It was in her MPH that she understood that before intervening in an infectious disease issue, social disparities must be addressed. Her primary goal is to increase the visibility of the Latino community, and to empower them to
The primary focus of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is to provide quality health care to individuals who are vulnerable (economically, medically, or geographically) and improve health equity by increasing access to health programs and skilled professionals (HRSA, 2017). Many of the HRSA’s major programs provide direct care, prevention services, and drug treatment for those in need, such as their maternal and child health programs, rural health programs, and programs to support low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS (HRSA, 2017). The HRSA also provides primary health services through its nearly 1,400 health centers and free clinics (HRSA, 2017). Additionally, they support workforce development through scholarships
The purpose of this essay is to define public health and compare it to personal health, also a discussion of benefits and disadvantages of public health. The following questions will also be answered: What are the benefits of public health assessments? What are the disadvantages, if any? Since I was eight years old, I have always been obsessed with learning about medicine, disease, and health. Aware of my fascination, my older sister took me to an exhibit of preserved human bodies that showcases the intricate anatomy of the carcasses. I enjoyed the form and function of anatomy and have taken it to art, meticulously replicating structures in my drawings. Most of my extended family works to some degree in the healthcare field, which allowed me to be further exposed to that area of work and develop my interests. My passions for health grew as I enrolled in higher-level biology courses at my high school, which led me to pursue a career in the medical field. While in college, chemistry facilitated my curiosity in medical technology,
To say that I’ve always known what I aspired to be would be nothing short of fiction. In fact, my career goals often change on a weekly basis. While policy and procedure inspire my inner businessman, I can’t deny my passion for health promotion and community outreach. Through my educational and practical experiences I’ve come to learn that I am hooked on several different genres of Public Health. And as I continue to browse through the seemingly endless selection of possibilities, I am certain that I want to begin this next chapter in the School of Public Health at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
One of the most appealing aspects of becoming a public health professional is the wide range of careers available to choose from. My career goals coincide with the range of opportunities; however, ultimately I want to work with an organization similar to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I want to focus on the social and medical aspects of disease, and examine the disproportionate rates of disease and disability among minorities. I also want to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS that is rapidly destroying so many countries. My passion to help others around me has sparked a desire to work with clinics around the world in order to promote change in the treatment and prevention of devastating diseases like HIV/AIDS.
Primary health care evolves from the economic, cultural, social, and political conditions of a country, and it is described as an essential part of health care that is universally provided to individuals in a community at the country's and community's expense (World Health Organisation [WHO], 1978). The goal of primary health care is to address the main local health problems, but it involves community education about these problems in addition to providing disease treatments (WHO, 1978). Furthermore, primary health care is concerned with nutrition promotion, sanitation standards, family planning, immunisation, disease control and prevention, and it promotes and relies on community and individual participation in primary health
Public health is a dynamic field of medicine that is concerned primarily with improving the health of populations rather than just the health of individuals. Winslow (1920) defined public health as;
I am applying for admission to the graduate program in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. I intend to pursue research in the fields of Signal Processing and Machine Learning. I am particularly interested in working on real world problems and applications which combine concepts from signal processing and machine learning with computational modelling and statistical inference. I am also interested in developing applications of signal and image processing using machine learning methods.
