Foundations of public health from my perspective is a great course to begin the Masters of Public Health program due to its broad spectrum of covering all areas of public health, networking opportunities, and to gain direction into a concentration. Due to the course being broad since it is covering many topics I hope to build a basic foundation in each different concentration to get a feel of the program and what to expect. Coming in from an undergraduate program and trying to adjust to the Master of Public Health program, I feel like the foundations in Public Health course is a good transition to ease into classes. The course will also freshen up my memory on current public health topics and issues. Aside from the transition and freshening …show more content…
These opportunities will be beneficial because it can open a lot of doors within the public health field. Networking for example can build relationships that can bring in jobs, internships and volunteer work that can help me within my career. Over time internships can turn into jobs and progress from there to climb the ladder within a company. Networking is a great tool because sometimes thats the extra step needed in order to land an internship or to get a job. Networking and seeing live people within the public health field also will give me a good idea about specific roles and jobs within the field and within multiple branches in public health which will help guide me into a concentration.
Choosing a concentration is very difficult for me at this point, but after taking this course I am hoping to gain knowledge in order to guide me into the concentration I want to focus on. Currently I am in between two concentrations which are: Epidemiology and Environmental Health and Occupational Safety. I am unsure of choosing one as my permanent career and focus because I really liked the job roles in both fields. Preparing myself for a certain concentration is important because this will determine my career and future
The following assignment will analyse and reflect on a communication situation which I observed during my practice .To be able to reflect upon this situation I will use Gibbs(1988) reflective model that will allow me to analyse the communication process between health visitor and client .It will also identify importance of reflective practice and will draw out conclusion for my new leadership role as health visitor .Epstein and Hundert(2002) stated reflective practice as being a benefit for practitioner while using communication ,knowledge ,reasoning , emotions and values in the care provided to improve the service for clients and communities. In addition Duffy(2007) considers that reflective
This impacts not only their loved ones, but also the rest of the population. Spreading cancer awareness allows others to be informed about cancers they may have not known about and possibly prevent them from happening to them in the future. Another aspect of Public Health that is very touching is the fact that they deal with suicide prevention. This is a very complicated legal situation and deals with public policies. Furthermore, helping with drug addictions was another impacting topic of Public Health. Not only is it difficult to watch a drug addict suffer on a daily basis, but also watching their families struggle emotionally. Public Health helps educate drug addicts by helping them quit the drug they are using and provide epidemics. In turn, this will allow the drug addict to quit their addiction as well as help their family’s situation get back to normal again. In conclusion, I learned that Public Health is a field in which it helps people feel happy again, teaches about health care disease, and helps change the lives of others positively. That is why the Public Health field will be an important career in the
Through numerous programs, opportunities, and challenging coursework, University of Pennsylvania did not just provide its students with new knowledge that they would use in the future, but also prepare them to enter their chosen profession. At University of Pennsylvania, my learning abilities will bloom as a bud turning into a bright flower. I believe that it is important for a student to be prepare not just in the aspect of education and information but also hands-on experience. The Pre-Health Core Studies Program does just that. The program make sure that those who have immense passion in any health profession, regardless of their previous exposure to any science coursework, has their own individual course that link to their background. “For over 60 years, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been dedicated to protecting health and promoting quality of life through the prevention and control of disease, injury, and disability,” (CDC, 2012, p. 1). The organization has a focus of decreasing the health and economic disadvantages of the principal reasons of demise and incapacity through diverse programs, thus safeguarding an extended, prolific, vigorous life for people, (CDC, 2012). This paper will expound on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and it is enhancement to the fundamental operations
I know the Public Health Associate Program opens many doors. My goals after completion of the program include working in a federal agency, non-governmental organization, or internationally to help build healthy, strong communities. Since traveling internationally at a young age, my goals have never changed. I have wanted to work in some capacity in government and politics to aide in bettering the world around me, and the lives of others.
William Beveridge was a man whom was asked by government to write a report on the best and most effective ways to help those on low incomes. This was after the Second World War when people felt they needed rewarding, which the government responded to by promising to create a more equal society. In Beveridge’s report in December 1942, he proposed that all people of a working age should contribute, which would benefit people who were sick, unemployed, retired, or widowed.
No matter what area I am placed in, I will have the opportunity to learn basic skills that will be helpful in whatever area of public health I end up working in. For example, I have worked in the post-assessment phase of the Healthy Corner Store Initiative in Cabarrus County but this program will allow me to gain experience in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs. This program also requires you to be adaptable to any situation and to leave your comfort zone, both of which I have done but not for an extended amount of time. I hope to learn more about public health policy, financial planning and management through this program. I have learned these skills in school but have yet to apply them in the
Public Health is an interesting topic. Many people may not understand the purpose of Public health, it is a fairly new field although it has been around since the 1800’s. Before being introduced to the the field, I was clueless and never knew such a subject existed. Going into college with dubious decisions on my major within the pre-med program I knew I wanted to help people and the society, but was unsure what to major in.
I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on one-on-one patient care that doctors provide, but also solving problems that affect the health of entire populations. The study of disease and health within populations; for instance, preventing disease, promoting health, and reducing health problems between groups are the main reasons I want to pursue an M.P.H focusing on epidemiology. These are my strongest interests because I believe they are important in improving our world’s health.
I am concerned with preventive health-care policies and how a proactive approach to disease can alleviate the disparities and prevalence of disease distributions. Furthermore, I want to effect change at the community level as opposed to the individual. I believe that a Master's of Public Health degree is a natural fit for me, one that will provide me with the big picture of health-care that I seek. Additionally, I believe that my interests and career aspirations will be best suited for the Epidemiology focus of Public Health. This advanced degree will give me the tools to strive for my career
This subject interests me because throughout my time in school I was always interested in the science (health side) to things so I would always research different areas, print bits out and put them all in a file. Still, to this day I continue to research different illnesses, medications, and treatments and put them all into the same file. I am suitable for this course because I am very determined, well driven, committed to learning new things and willing to try anything if it means getting closer to my goal of becoming a nurse.
Most SOPH in the UK are organized around the themes of capacity building, multidisciplinary approach, balanced teaching and research. Information is dissipated in traditional class room setting, either as full-time 12 month programmes, or as part-time 24-60 months programmes.(7) Some SOPH have adopted more technologically advanced means of education delivery, utilizing electronic means to provide distance learning facilities, especially for international students who may not be able to afford the cost of living in the UK. The curriculum of most courses in public health conventionally includes subject such as epidemiology, health policy, health promotion, health management, environmental health, human biology and health economics.(6,8,9) Currently however, the scope has been expanded to include courses involving statistical analysis and the use of computer programmes; the ability to access, manage and work with information; the ability to present and disseminate information in an effective manner; interview and
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
My long term goals include advancing my knowledge in the public health field and to use my newly acquired skills to impact the community in a positive way. I intend to accomplish this by becoming a health care administrator or working at an institution focused on education and disease prevention. I hope to use my research and educational background to monitor health hazards and find solutions for them. Enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health will provide me with the tools necessary to succeed in achieving this
My entire life has been a battle finding purpose and passion and my undergraduate career was no exception. As a minority and an immigrant to the United States I have succeeded through a mountain of odds to get to this point to choose what my future will be. During my undergraduate career I struggled to find the balance between doing both productive and fulfilling work. My undergraduate career began with an interest in biology and being a medical professional. During the many enrichment and shadow experiences at my university’s biology department I discovered my affinity for interacting and responding to the personal needs of individuals. Later on this lead me to studying philosophy which was very theoretical and widely applicable. During my time as a student in the Philosophy Department, my decision to pursue a Masters of Public Health was influenced by courses like Ethics, Environmental Philosophy and Social Philosophy all of which helped hone my critical thinking abilities respectively. One of the most memorable courses was Environmental Ethics where I was introduced to different interpretations and approaches of interacting with the natural world. Learning that our approaches to the world directly affect our health inspires me to explore how those reactions affect specific populations and society as a whole. The many types of environmentalist theories that I learned years ago will be relevant in understanding the present conditions
