When first beginning my journey at UC Merced I was like most undergraduate students, confused and overwhelmed, on what major to choose. I didn’t know what I wanted to do here at UC Merced whether it was to pursue a degree in biology or psychology. I would later come to realize that I wanted neither of those things. As a freshman, I took the course Public Health 005 which is Global Health. Global Health drew me to really take an interest in Public Health. This course helped me with the development of analytical and methodological skills to effectively address important population health challenges in a global context. I like to consider myself a humanitarian and when learning about global issues, it helped me enhance my ability to apply on how to properly …show more content…
I also find a lot of joy in working with people, especially children. Besides the fact that I can help shape other people’s lives with Public Health, it is important to think globally because it is easy to forget about global problems when we are too focused on our own. Public Health as a major has taught me a lot about the logistics of health. Public Health nursing is something I have done personal research on. Public Health Nursing is a career I have thought about which focuses on improving population health by emphasizing prevention, and attending to multiple determinants of health. I think having gone on a research trip to Peru recently helped me realize that I enjoy conducting research and most of all interacting with people from different cultures and really trying to understand them. On my trip, I had the opportunity of meeting people who live in ST. Thomas (a place in the amazon jungle). When speaking to them I felt that I really tried to understand what they were doing, how they lived their life and what they could do to really extend their year a lot
From Vicki Kistler’s talk, I learned that Public Health overlaps with a lot of Health Science majors. Some majors that involve Public Health are IT, Pre-med, and undecided (basic science classes). The goal of Public Health is to respond, present, and help people live happy and healthy lives. Public Health also isn’t one major or discipline, it’s a philosophy. Some careers in the Public Health field are adoption, reducing mortality for infants, and being a lawyer who supports the Public Health Law. There are 48 health instructors out of 50 and there also isn’t a Public Health department in every county of Pennsylvania. In Allentown, there are two categories of Public Health: Personal (based on personal aspects/preferences) and Environment
In college, I hope to grow my identity as an individual of progress. To start, I firmly believe that knowledge is power, and education provides the opportunities to collect wisdom, answer my curiosities, and discover new passion. Currently, my favorite subjects are AP Biology and AP Spanish. Learning about the processes of the cell cycle in AP Biology will aid me in my future career as a Pediatrician. I have decided to major in either Biology or Spanish with a pre-med track.
Choosing public health turned out to be an excellent choice for me at the time because I learned about all the different kinds of health fields I could specialize in. I also had the wonderful opportunity to take classes, such as Healthy U and Introduction to Philosophy and Medicine, which improved my understanding of the
The roal of public health nursing is to promote and protect the health of the population. This proactive approach does not limit their scope of practice to health concerns of individuals but also to developing and implementing programs and policies that help enhance the health of populations. The role of public health nurses is to focus on population centered care with the outcome of promoting health, preventing disability and disease, and improving the quality of life. An effective public health nurse is able to evaluate assessment data to define population diagnoses and set priorities accordingly. They can also serve as advocates for individuals and families in the population to develop policies, access resources, and protect their
My inspiration to pursue a lifelong career in nursing derived from witnessing a close individual succumb to a painful and chronic disease when I was the tender age of 6. I pondered and researched endlessly on the symptoms and damage caused by that disease until I comprehended its origin and everlasting effects. The memory of witnessing that individual die will continue to plague my memories and serve as a reminder of why I continue to strive for my goals today. From that point on, I knew exactly the person I aspired to be in the future—a nurse. I was fascinated with acquiring knowledge about the human body and diseases. In high school, I applied to a local hospital to become a candystriper to gain more insight about the medical field and nursing. I was placed into the endoscopy department and it was there where I truly established my determination to take on the challenge of becoming a nurse. I witnessed and experienced a myriad of things during my time there. I grasped how to become more compassionate and to prioritize one’s life and safety above everything. The hospital became my personified version of Utopia.
We as a class were given a variety of health subjects to choose from to undertake a research project that counted as a huge part of our grades. I picked the study of epidemiology to be the area I would focus on extensively for the next three months of that semester. This obviously meant that I had to read and learn a couple of books to get a clear idea of how I was going to present my idea and findings. As I read through some of these books, I really became intrigued. The aspects of global health issues, biostatistics and health policies to name a few really jolted me into considering this area of study as a potential future career choice, as oppose as to just a research project. I was really fascinated as I read and came across the range of issues that public health officials such as epidemiologists had to solve or were in the process of solving in inventive ways. I obtained a crucial but very methodical understanding of the very issues that is being faced in the world of health care today. Ever since this class came and went, I have been highly focused on public health issues through other classes and
In the corner of the small hospital room stood a shy little girl. “You shouldn't be in here, honey”, my mother said as she nudged me out of the room where my grandfather lay dying. At the time, I couldn't understand the enormity of the situation. Ignorant to what was happening around me, my innocent mind fled with curiosity. The beeping of the machines and the soft quick steps of nurses captivated my attention. I was fascinated with this strange new world. This is the moment that sparked my desire to become someone great; a nurse.
Public Health is an interesting topic. Many people may not understand the purpose of Public health, it is a fairly new field although it has been around since the 1800’s. Before being introduced to the the field, I was clueless and never knew such a subject existed. Going into college with dubious decisions on my major within the pre-med program I knew I wanted to help people and the society, but was unsure what to major in.
Given the goals of WRITE, please state why you should participate in the next class of students. Growing up in rural Wyoming instilled within me a desire to work toward improving access to medical care in rural areas, and I feel my participation in WRITE would equip me with the skills and tools necessary to pursue this goal. I possess a unique perspective into rural communities and will be able to share this with physicians and patients while deepening my understanding of health care challenges in rural areas. I enjoy immersing myself in novel situations in order to learn about cultures, practices, people, and worldviews which differ from my own. I strongly believe in a holistic view of medicine: empowering patients to become partners in
Please allow me to introduce myself as Crystal Jordan. I started with Poudre Valley Health System in January 2007 in the Patient Access Department. In late 2009, I transferred to the Medical/Neurology Unit at Medical Center of the Rockies to provide patient care as a Nursing Aide. I have deliberately but steadily pursued my passion for nursing working as a single mom. I graduated from Denver School of Nursing this past March, 2016.
Public health nurses (PHN) “apply the nursing process”, “use data”, and emphasizes “prevention…educating and empowering” individuals in the community (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2014). The government on federal, state, and local levels rely on the PHN to uses their nursing skills and critical thinking to do the “greatest good for the majority of people” in the community (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2014). The funding provided by the federal, state, and local government is assessed and implemented based on nurses input and epidemiology. As a PHN they must have skills like, assessment, “priority planning”, and evaluation; working in conjunction with the three core functions of public health according to IOM, “assessment, assurance, and policy development” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2014).
Statistics show that 1 in 4 people in the United Kingdom will endure a mental health problem at some time within their life, resulting in members of society requiring assistance with their mental Health. Mental health nurses aim to care for members of society with mental health conditions in addition to supporting their families or carers to secure a positive life experience for the people who do suffer with a mental disorder. My personal reason for applying to university to study mental health nursing is that I endured multiple mental disorders since childhood; this had a huge impact on my education, social abilities and emotional health. I went through behaviourist, psychodynamic, cognitive and humanistic therapeutic approaches which gave me a fantastic learning experience into managing, not only my own mental health but other peoples who have suffered mental disorders such as dementia, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression during my volunteer work and work experiences.
I’ve always believed that if I can help just one person in my life, it’s a life worth living, this has led to me aspiring to become a Mental Health Nurse. I developed this interest a couple of years ago after witnessing my friends and family going through mental health troubles, I witnessed the help and brilliant treatment they received from the mental health team. I did some research and spoke to nurses and counsellors about their experience and what’s involved and what challenges they face on a daily basis, they gave me a good understanding that the course (and job) will be far from easy, it will be emotionally challenging and test the limits of me, but it has not put me off, I have developed a good support network of friends and family, and have learnt ways to cope in hard situations.
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
Two years ago, it was my first time to hear the word “Public Health.” When I considered my major, I realized that our school has the public health major. I tried to search about the public health major. One of my relatives in the United States told me that this major is good in the United States. There are several health issues in the United States, such as chronic diseases or substance abuse. Thus, public health is important field. On the other hand, in my home country, Japan, there are also have several health problems. One of the biggest problem is the declining birthrate and aging society. In addition, more Japanese adults have chronic disease. However, I never heard this major in my home country. At that time, I felt strange. Japan also
