The practice of public health most aligns with my passion for science, culture, and the community. The aspects of public health that I am most drawn to is the opportunity to work with diverse and underserved patient populations, and the emphasis that is placed on disease prevention through healthy lifestyle. My academic and extracurricular experiences during my college career contributed to my interest and preparation for a career as a physician in the public health practice. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Science with a minor in Anthropology. I took a variety of classes that expanded my perspective of the role of nutrition in disease prevention and treatment. Through my studies in anthropology, I learned about the complex role
I am drawn to family medicine by this same appreciation for humanism that is evident to me among practitioners in this field. I am similarly motivated and excited by the intellectual challenges, scope, and meaningfulness offered by a career in family medicine. I believe that a family medicine residency program will inspire me to excel and arm me with the tools I need to achieve my future goals. Upon completion of residency, I aim to devote myself to serving the underserved while dedicating time to conducting research and participating in community and medical
I envision the next ten years to be a time of intense personal growth. I will be building upon my strengths and improving my weaknesses. I hope to be involved within my community, whether through volunteer work or a community-based organization. As for my career, I see myself working as a primary care physician. I was intrigued by the profession of a Nurse at a young age. However, what truly sparked my interest in this thriving career was when a close friend of mine was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Ever since she was diagnosed I wanted to help to create an encouraging, loving and supporting environment around in her time of need and sorrow. Since then I have always been fascinated and interested by the scientific and academic side of nursing along with the caregiving duties of the profession. Because of this, it has lead me to study Level 3 Health and Social Care programme. I am particularly enjoying my Level 3 Health and Social Care programme as it allowed me to carry out the theoretical side of my course in a real life environment as I have a work placement with a care agency. Now I am striving to further my knowledge and proficiencies through taking a university level course in Nursing.
When I first arrived at UC Davis as an undergraduate, I was unaware of what global health was. Although my interests aligned with health topics, such as disease prevention and improving health literacy, I did not explore any other graduate degrees besides an M.D. However, my career plans changed when I joined a public health advocacy group called RIVER (Recognizing Illnesses Very Early and Responding). RIVER prioritized educating underserved populations in Davis and the Greater Sacramento area about how essential preventive care is to one’s health. Through my participation in the organization as a board member, I learned more about preventive care and applied that knowledge by teaching underprivileged communities about how to make healthier lifestyle changes through exercise and nutrition. This organization’s
In addition to scholastic achievement, well rounded physicians have plenty of life experiences. They have fought through tragedies, yet find reasons to smile. They demonstrate success and leadership in spite of past failures. Their story may not be glamorous, but they consistently overcome obstacles that would stifle others. Their drive and determination defines who they are. The physician that emphasizes the well being of others over personal gain, that is the physician I plan to be. My path towards becoming a physician has been difficult in order to shape me into a more complete person. These past experiences allow me to sympathize, empathize, and more supportive of patients in the primary care setting. I feel the need to use my personal
For the very first time in my life, I had executed a series of behavior changes in order to lose fifteen pounds by this semester. I am pleased and more than grateful to see that my customized plan is successful, and took effect in different aspects of my well-being. “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become”, I believe this quote by Carl Jung encapsulated why my health improvement plan would work – determination incorporated into a personalized plan. Hereinafter, I would like to discuss in details what and why had my behavior changes improved both my short-term and long-term health.

I have chosen pre-medicine because I have always wanted to work in a hospital helping people. I was first exposed to the possibility of working in a hospital because of my mother, who is a nurse. Whenever she would take me to work with her, I could picture myself working there, helping others.
I was the volunteer coordinator for a student service organization (SNAC) during my undergraduate work. SNAC’s goal was to improve the health of disadvantaged students through nutrition education and interventions. We provided food assistance, taught healthy cooking classes, and linked students to other assistance services as needed. I quickly recognized a relationship between nutrition, socioeconomic status, and health, which opened the door to my interests in public health. I saw the opportunity to help individuals by improving the wellness of their community.
The MAPP Steering Committee convened to hear the CHNA results. The assessment identified ten potential health issues that needed to be reviewed and evaluated. I discussed results from the health data which guided the ranked these indicators. Adjustments occurred during voting to the scoring rubric and technology system. After the prioritization meeting, my host site supervisor explained the impact from the changes and challenges that will influence the upcoming CHIP and potential alternative methods to integrate and address the health issues.
My calling to nursing started when my father got diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. I watched him suffering through radiation and chemotherapy, but what got him through those hard times was the help of some great loving and caring nurses. As I became more involved in taking care of him, my passion for nursing had greatly increased. Now, for nine years, I have maintained a commitment to caring for others in the field of Nursing. Being a registered nurse (RN), I have taken care of one patient at a time, which I have been involved in the amelioration of lives, and have only been left wanting to give and do more. Pursuing a master of science in nursing (MSN) is more than just a logical or natural progression for my career. It is a life choice, one that is backed by highly refined clinical judgments and in-depth exposure to an array of set-ups, and levels of care. In this personal statement, I will deeper highlight an explanation of my career goals, the reasons for my choice of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization, and lastly the reason for pursuing an advanced degree in nursing.
