Opportunities for the general public to interact and influence public health policy
Mr. Lamphier had great advice on ways the public can communicate with legislators and influence public health policy, which is also along the same guidelines for nursing. Know who your representatives are for the house, senate, county and school district level. Support a candidate either financially or through campaigning. Build relationships utilize the spring and summer months when the representatives are not in legislation to make contact and offer your nursing expertise. • Another is by calling, writing or e-mailing your representative stating the bill you want them to support or oppose. Be sure to provide facts, data and statistics to support your position.
• Attend and or provide testimony at public or committee hearings. “Hearings can be legislative, oversight or investigative” (Mason et al., 2014, p. 497) allowing the committee to gauge public opinion on the bill or measure.
• Volunteer or become appointed to sit at the decision table of a government task force or committee. The main point is to be a part of the dialog, and stand up to advocate for yourself and your community.
Lobbying is another strategy that, “individual citizens can and do have access to and accountability from elected officials –and you don’t have to be a paid lobbyist to make a difference” (Mason et al., 2014, p. 519). Successful lobbyists are prepared with adequate research on the topic of interest, identify the power base of supporters and use high-level communication skills to build trusting relationships.
