The Navajo Indians have influenced the history and culture in Arizona in the 21st century. Through the past and present the Navajo Indians have been around dated back to centuries before Christopher Columbus landed in America. The Navajo were established in the Four Corners. The rich culture that the Navajo have been creating is still current today and influenced our states’ beauty.

The Navajo tribe is one of the most well known Native American tribes in the world, and also quite possible the largest. The Navajo reservation covers a large portion in the state of Arizona, an is the largest known reservation, even having its own government. However, the history of the Navajo tribe is a rich and complex thing, spanning almost as far back as the settlement of the first human inhabitation of the Americas. There are not large amounts of documented history from the pre-european era of the Navajo, but extensive scientific studies and multiple archaeological finds have given us clues about the early tribe. The Navajo were originally part of a group in western Canada called the Athapaskans.

After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a decade of uncertainty followed. Both the Pueblo and Spanish, were uncertain as to what the future would hold. The Pueblos, after the revolt, reoccupied their pueblos and carried on with their lives while the Spanish lived in colonies in exile farther south. However, the two groups proved to not stay apart for very long. As early as 1681, Governor Otermin attempted to reconquer the Pueblo world and marched to the Isleta Pueblo with a small army of 146 men. His group was unsuccessful, however, and was forced to turn around after his group, weakened by the harsh winter conditions, encountered a group of Pueblo leaders and fighting men. Six years later, Governor Reneros led a force up the Camino Real in 1687 where he met resistance at Santa Ana and Zia Pueblos, and in 1689, Governor Jironza ferociously assaulted Zia Pueblo.

Though obvious to the name, the American Indian Tribes had much to do with the growth of what we now know of as the US. Long ago when the english settlers came over with Columbus, on the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, they had found that there were people living there, were very different from “the white man”. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 is an important event in U.S. history having been the first complete victory for Native Americans against any European nation. One of the major conflicts between the Pueblo Indians and the Spanish colonists was their different religions. Many historians believe that the Pueblo Indians revolted against the Spanish in order to eliminate Catholicism because it was threatening their own beliefs. Many Spanish officials interpret the Pueblo Revolt as being unnecessary and guided by the devil. The men were in charge of getting food and keeping the camp safe from predators,and the women were in charge of the homes and land. The word Navajo comes from “Tewa Navahu”, translating to mean “highly cultivated lands” loosely.

In the cooler weather, they wore buffalo skin for warmth. The Mexicans eventually influenced their style of dress. They began wearing vests, white tunics and more colorful clothing made from cotton.Storytelling is very important to the Apache Indian culture. Since they were not governed by any set of laws or rules and there were no jails for poor behavior, the Apache relied on passing down a code of conduct orally, from one generation to the next.The Apache were talented in arts and crafts. It’s strange to think that even after my commitment to the military, here I am living with Sioux natives.
