Quentin Tarantino’s films are always controversial, and Pulp Fiction is no exception. The film depicts graphic violence and overt drug usage, while shying away from politically correct language. The film’s controversial topics such as racial stereotypes, has led some critics to hail the movie as racist; however, the movie denies many of these stereotypes, portraying character and character relationships as not exclusive to their stereotype. Furthermore, the movie mocks many of societies stereotypes, and it is not afraid to address, or not to address, uncomfortable racial topics. Thus, Pulp Fiction challenges racial barriers.

“The first rule about fight club is that you don’t talk about fight club” (Palahniuk 87). The story of Fight Club was very nail biting; you never knew what was going to happen next. There were so many things that led up to a complete plot twist. It was amazing how closely directed and written Chuck Palahniuk and David Fincher’s versions were. However, the role in both that stood out to me the most was the role of Marla. Marla was the biggest influence in discovering the narrator (or Jack’s) identity.

If one were to describe the very base plot of “Pulp Fiction,” to another person, the film would perhaps seem somewhat unremarkable. The movie follows the exploits of several characters around mid-1990s Los Angeles all of whom are in some way related to criminal activities (Pulp Fiction). Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times says, “The movie creates a world where there are no normal people and no ordinary days.” The typical action movie formula consists of the following: an antagonist bent on a diabolical scheme versus a protagonist who has some sort of vengeance toward the evildoer. In Pulp Fiction, the characters are neither good nor bad; instead, they are unique individuals, good, bad and everything in between. The characters have depth, thus making the film far more believable and life-like. After Butch had thrown the boxing match, Marcellus began a hard target search for Butch. The two would inadvertently run into one another: Butch making his way out of L.A. after getting his family heirloom and Marcellus picking up a box of donuts. The two wind up in a nasty situation (both are captured by raging sodomites bent on raping Marcellus and Butch); however, Butch is able to escape. Instead of leaving Marcellus to suffer, he saves him. Just having evil tendencies does not make someone uncontrollably evil; Tarantino is showing that regardless of previous actions, one is still human.
