Rom Com or Not?
Serendipity, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Pretty Woman, Overboard, and Bridesmaids. What do all these movies have in common? For one, they are all obviously romantic comedies. But, what makes them romantic comedies? Probably the most obvious trait they share is that each of these movies creates a lighthearted, whimsical, and amused feeling for their viewers.. There are no times during the movies that the audience feels uneasy or confused. The filmmakers for these movies also creates characters that the viewers like and root for. For these reasons, Punch Drunk Love is not a romantic comedy. When compared to the previous examples it’s clear that Punch Drunk Love does not provide any of the traditional romantic comedy feelings. In fact, it makes the viewers feel anxious and very confused. Additionally, the main characters are much different: they are awkward, to say the least, and the audience does not relate to or like them. Clarity, light heartedness, and a positive relationship with the characters are important assets to be considered a romantic comedy. Romantic comedies typically stick to certain conventions. The meet cute in rom coms is an important convention, that Punch Drunk Love does not follow. Meet cutes are important because they can provide a certain feeling for the viewers. For example, in Serendipity the main characters, John and Sara, meet on Christmas Eve at a department store, while reaching for the same pair of gloves. This meet cute gives
In the movie Dirty Dancing, the main characters are seventeen-year-old Frances Houseman, also known as ‘Baby,’ and Johnny Castle, who is a supposedly twenty-five-year-old dance instructor (Sylwester, 2008) This movie takes place in the summer of 1963 at Kellerman’s, a vacation resort (Ardolino & Gottileb, 1987). Throughout the beginning of the movie, the budding romance between Baby and Johnny becomes apparent; by the end of the movie, they have confirmed a relationship, but Johnny has been fired and must vacate the resort. Due to the setting of this movie, the gender construction and messages are a little more outward than they may be in a more recent movie.
In the article, “Types of Women in Romantic Comedies Who Are Not Real”, actor and writer, Mindy Kaling, classifies the women’s roles from classic romantic comedies, while a critical analysis piece over the genre as well. Starting the article, She discusses her inspiration for the piece itself, furthermore expressing her love for romance, as well. Throughout the article, she separates the different types of women in these roles, whether it’s the obnoxious glamour girl, or the girl with an amazing personality, in latent terms, the difference between “The Klutz” and “The Ethereal Weirdo.” By the end of each example, she differentiates how cliche the storyline of the female character
The audience plays a pivotal role in Modern Romance because the fundamental goal of the book is for Ansari to educate people on social and dating norms. His book is primarily directed towards teenagers and young adults who actively participate in the dating scene. While Ansari tried to cover the entirety of the “modern romance” conversation, he fails to do so. In an attempt to not lose reliability, he strengthens his argument by using ethos to acknowledge that “this book is primarily about heterosexual relationships,” (Ansari 8) along with pertaining to the “middle-class people, folks who had gone to college and put off having kids until their late twenties or thirties” (Ansari 9). By stating this, it saves readers the time of pondering what the dating culture is like for LGBTQ members and other people that don’t fit those catagories. Ansari wants this book to be a guide for people struggling in the dating world, so they can be more effective and have a higher chance of finding a soulmate or partner.
Many romantic films do not have fairy tale stories or happy endings, although love serves as a shield against the harshness of the real world. Romantic films often elaborate the main theme of love at first sight. Romanticism refers back to the romantic characters of the Middle Ages and also modern films. Romantic love on film is a universal human experience that produces intensely powerful, strong feelings. Romantic Literature has had a strong influence on modern day films through pathos, folklore, and love.
The play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare and the film The Princess Bride directed and co-produced by Rob Reiner share unlikely literary parallels. As Catherine Belsy states in an essay “A Midsummer Night’s dream…proposes that love is a dream, or perhaps a vision; that is absurd, irrational a delusion, or, perhaps, on the other hand, a transfiguration; that it is doomed to be momentary, and that it constitutes at the same time the proper foundation for a lifelong marriage” (A Modern Prospective 182). The Princess Bride the movie is an encapsulation of the main themes of true love and the fantastical elements that surround it. The Princess Bride the story the young boy’s grandfather tells him is simply a storybook, like a fairytale
This movie is the perfect melting pot of humor and action. A lot of movies fail to hit the balance between too much humor and too much action. The Princess Bride is an exclusion to this cinematic misfortune. Although there are interruptions from the story with the narration by a grandfather and his grandson.“The Princess Bride” is a wonderful adventure movie meant for people of all ages with humorous irony, colorful and unique characters, and fantastical, well choreographed stunts.
Sleepless in Seattle is one of the most unforgettable and popular romantic comedies ever put on film. The film is always entertaining no matter how many
‘When Harry Met Sally’ is a romantic comedy set from the mid 1970’s to the mid-to-late 1980’s. From the beginning the film seemed like the perfect example from Mark Knapp’s 10 stages of relational development. There was a plethora of talking and Harry was quite witty while Sally was very sweet and up-beat. As a personal opinion, at first the film seemed to be slightly boring plot-wise – a man and a woman meet to travel a ways to the city? Sounds like the perfect situation to ‘fall in love’ in and have a happily ever-after. Though, as more of the movie was watched, it became more interesting and less of an assignment requirement.
Romantic comedies are one of many exuberantly entertaining genres of fine arts. Romantic comedies typically follow identical plot line structures, but they do not have to follow the same plot line. All romantic comedies differ in some sort of form or fashion. The play As You Like It by Shakespeare and the movie Just Go With It staring Adam Sandler, Brooklyn Decker, and Jennifer Anniston are both romantic comedies that differ dramatically in terms of their build up until the main characters are wedded. In Just Go With It there is a love triangle where the main character doesn’t realize his true love until he is about to marry the wrong woman. In As You Like It the main characters fall in love at first sight and get married in their second “official” encounter with each other. Although the build up in each movie varies dramatically, the uniqueness of the female heroine, Rosalind, in As You Like It is the main difference between the two romantic comedies. This causes an uncommon romance plot in As You Like It.
I think Wedding Crashers is a film that will make you laugh, because of all the great actors and humor they provide. With actors like Jeremy who is (Vince Vaughn) and John who is (Owen Wilson) which spend their free time crashing weddings. All they do is go into weddings drink for free and get all the women they want since they are all desperate.
“Lonely Hearts” conveys a deep sense of desperation of those who seek alternative methods of finding love. This trend of matchmaking has significantly grown from the
William Shakespeare once told us, "All the World’s a Stage" —and now his quote can be applied to his own life as it is portrayed in the recent film, Shakespeare In Love. This 1998 motion picture prospered with the creative scripting of Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman and direction of John Madden. The combined effort of these men, on top of many other elements, produced a film that can equally be enjoyed by the Shakespeare lover for its literary brilliance, or for the romantic viewer who wants to experience a passionate love story.
Romantic Comedies. We all know of at least one. Chances are we all have one that we could watch over and over again. But, why? What makes romantic comedies so appealing? Why do so many people like them? The Incredible Jessica James is a romantic comedy, that is also an adult’s coming of age movie, but not your typical one. A typical romcom plays love as an almost insignificantly light hearted joke. While love is still joked about, it isn’t quite as light hearted in The Incredible Jessica James.
The genre of romantic comedy has been successful throughout history. Men and women alike watch these films for several reasons, even though they are “predictable.” Whether it’s for the comedy portrayed, or the love story itself, romantic comedies provide aspects of a story that almost anyone can appreciate. Over time, people began to argue that contemporary romantic comedies have depreciated, but this does not hold true. When comparing Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up (2007), which is about a stoner low-life, played by Seth Rogan, who knocks up co-star, Katherine Heigl, who plays Allison, to George Cukor’s Adam’s Rib (1949), which tells the story of two attorneys bickering over their shared court case, there is a radical difference between the two films in their sheer content to portray a love story while sharing the common romantic comedy plot, but one tells a superior love story.
The Age of Adaline seems, at first glance, like any other modern romance movie, but it
