I am writing this letter because I am concerned about the levels of neglect and cruelty you put the animals through at your stores each day. All the way from rats to even goldfish. Considering your company already faced a class action lawsuit for peddling unhealthy puppy mill dogs all the way back in 2009 and you still haven’t taken action to solve the problem really surprised me. Thankfully starting in 2010, dogs that came from puppy mills were no longer aloud to be sold at Petland. Even though the puppy mill problem was solved, that does not mean there weren’t any other problems that needed to be addressed.
“This is horrible! I can’t even watch this!” Those were my immediate thoughts the first time my eyes were opened to the inhumane animal cruelty on factory farms. Factory farming enables mass production to supply the demands of today’s society but also enables the cruel treatment of animals. We need to end the cruelty and abuse that these animals have to endure at the factory farms because it causes loss to the business, reduces the quality of the product produced, and endangers the health of those who buy the product. We can promote humane treatment of factory farm animals by prevention through education, by enforcing humane laws by being an example of humane animal treatment, and by donating and/or
Did you know that 2.11 million puppies are sold that came from puppy mills. Puppies in puppy mills can get many diseases, including heartworm, kennel cough, and many more. This is why Puppy mills should be banned immediately. At a puppy mill Puppies are just a thing to be sold, not a living being. puppies are killed in shelters each year because there are too many of them from puppy mills.
“ Animals Frozen Alive, Crudely Gassed at Petco” cats being left to starve, hamsters being mistreated and neglected. The pain never ends for these animals that you have stolen the lives of. Your business, charged with a whopping ”28 counts of animal cruelty” , continues to traumatize all of the pets that walk into the petco doors. I strongly believe that this
Hi, my name is Ava Sylvester. I am 12 years old. I am in 6th grade. I go to Grandview middle school in Mound. My concern is puppy mills in Minnesota. I have 2 family dogs of my own. I would never want to see them get hurt so badly. I want to enforce a law that shuts down puppy mills for good.
A quote once said by Frederick the Great states; “A dog is a man’s best friend.” There are millions of dog lovers across the world, I’m speaking to many in this class right now, so dog lovers, have you ever thought about this? Imagine walking into a pet store and looking around at all the different kinds of animals, and then your eyes are set on the dogs. You just can’t decide what one you want. One of the main key facts about choosing the right dog is considering where it is raised and many dog owners don’t. Some of the dogs could have been raised in a puppy mill. Puppy mills are a problem in the U.S today. And the problem with puppy mills is the effect they have on the dog itself and even the owner.
In the United States, 2,000 to 3,000 puppies and kittens are born every hour, yet only one out of ten of these animals will find a permanent home. The remaining animals will be left to fend for themselves on the streets, abandoned and lonely, with only about one year to live. Even with the rate of animals who will not find a home already, people are still determined to run puppy mills which increases that number, even if it is breaking the law. Puppy mills are bad because they keep the puppies under bad conditions, many of the dogs they breed get diseases and defects, and it can lead to animal abandonment and neglect.
weeks old as this is a very crucial time for both the mother and kids and it is
“To provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States”
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first human society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Henry Bergh, a man of great conviction and a tireless fighter for animals founded the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. Mr. Bergh believed that all animals are entitled to being treated kindly and respectfully at the hands of humans and should be protected under the law. The ASPCA’s mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals [ASPCA], 2014, About us section) When Mr. Bergh founded the ASPCA, he and his volunteers spent tireless hours fighting for the rights of
Since most pet store animals are bred to make the cutest purebred, rather than making the animal healthy and stable to better the breed, a lot of genetic disorders occur with animal breeders, such as heart issues and epilepsy. There are usually too many multiple animals that the employees are taking care of, so they usually don’t catch a lot of illnesses that puppies can contract such as, canine distemper, parvovirus, and severe gastrointestinal disorders that they are prone to while at the pet store. The owner would then have to make the terrible decision of taking it back to the pet store or spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a treatment that might save their
In a cage that is only six inches longer and six inches wider than a dog's body, there is no room for a dog to run or get any of the physical activity necessary for their development. The wire bottoms of their cages are causing sores on their feet. These cages are caked with their own feces, as well as from other dogs, whose cages are stacked above them. Puppy Mills are facilities in which dogs are mass bred, these are well known for their terrible conditions and treatment of animals. One aspect less known is the legislation that makes this legal, which is The Animal Welfare Act. According to the United States Department of Agriculture: The Animal Welfare Act is federal law that defines the bare minimum standards of the treatment of animals
Physical cruelty is present in Orwell’s writing due to the physical cruelty he experienced in his life, specifically in his early childhood. The underlying ideology behind the brutal executions of the animals in Animal Farm, and the torture and political based cruelty in 1984 both tie to Orwell’s own experience of physical cruelty as a child, chronicled in “Such Such Were the Joys.” Through the analysis of the three, previously stated, Orwell works, one can derive Orwell’s use of physical cruelty.
Some people may think that buying a pet from a pet store is essentially rescuing an animal from one of these places, and while it may be true, it is only supporting the industry and allowing it to continue with these horrible practices. I will now be explaining what we can do to stop these practices.
Domestic pets have been around for centuries and they continue to squeeze their way into the hearts of thousands monthly. Organizations like PetSmart aim to provide pet owners with all stages of life products for their loved four-legged babies. Their vision states “we love pets, and we believe pets make us better people” (PetSmart.com, n.d., Para 1). Pets are family and PetSmart ensures that they can offer everything essential to a healthy life for their pet including medical(in most PetSmarts), hygiene care through their grooming department, training at various skill levels and even adoption centers and events to help homeless animals find a new family. PetSmart, originally name PetFood Warehouse, opened its first two store in 1987. PETsMART’s name changed in 1988 while welcoming grooming salons and exotic animal departments into the business. In 1992 the company welcomed veterinary medicine into their stores and began creating adoption centers for rescue animals. PetSmart became PetSmart in 2005 when the organization wanted to break away from the company being a mart and lean more toward smart innovations. The organization continued to grow adding in training and pet hotels to their organizational plans along with partnering with other organizations such as Martha Stewart. The organization, since the beginning, now offers domestic pet products for pets of all sizes along with grooming, training, veterinary hospitals and boarding facilities all
Animal cruelty continues to plague the meat and dairy industry and a policy to reverse this is enacting stricter regulations on meat and dairy labels that explicitly state the additives and preservatives used on the product. Moreover, my policy will persuade people to purchase meat and dairy that is ethically raised and is not made with preservatives or additives, this is my value of health. Moreover, my policy is for those who eat meat and dairy and are unaware of the health side affects of consuming it and the animal cruelty that goes into producing a piece of meat or glass of milk, which encompasses my value of compassion. We are a compassionate species who turns the channel during an ASPCA commercial. We root for Nemo, Babe and Bambi yet we watch the movie whilst eating fish, pork or venison. The hypocrisy is unbelievable yet not talked about. Most Americans do not recognize this link between our compassion and the animals we eat and the hypocrisy that surrounds it. In this essay I address the compassion humans posses and how it is being wiped out through eating meat and dairy. I also address how we have the potential to rid the meat and dairy industry of the abuse. I will also discuss how meat and dairy is detrimental to our health.
