Puritans Religious Beliefs

In the seventeenth century many people left Britain for America to seek new opportunities. They created colonies that were predominantly segregated by religion. The Puritans settled in New England, while the Anglicans journeyed to Virginia. These sects had very different approaches of how to practice their religious lifestyles in America. The Puritans were much more strict about their religious observance. They did not want any of their customs to change, and therefore, they would admonish the younger generation for sinning and adopting new lifestyles. The Preachers warned the people that god would unleash his wrath on them if they did not adhere to god’s commands. On the other hand, the Anglicans were much more forgiving and were open to the idea that the religious observance would change over time. They embraced the fact that people sinned, nevertheless god still loved them. Thus, as long as they believed in god and tried their best to serve him, they would get salvation. A major difference between the two religions is that Puritanism was driven through fear and strict law while Anglicanism was driven through spirituality and the love of god. As a result of this, the Anglicans did not fear the concept of change as long as they served god. The Puritans were not able to accept change because of their fear of god’s wrath.
