The study methodology used in this review is qualitative Description. The research method and design align with the problem statement, purpose, research questions, and hypotheses/phenomena. The aim of this study is to investigate the collaboration of families, schools, and teachers to the critical academic and social development of students with disabilities, especially when parents and teachers differ in ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. This concept of alignment does align with my dissertation literature review on “Teachers Perceptions of Disabled and “ESL” Students in Urban Schools District, and its Influence on Families.” The concept is necessitating; it prepares educators to address the needs of diverse students and family members.
Education is a very complex and evolving process. Today, teaching entails educating a diverse population according to their unique individual needs. Schools are comprised of individuals with different races, beliefs, cultures, values, languages, social statues, etc. While considering both the historical and preset-day issues, I am able to see many parallels between racial integration in schools and integration of students with disabilities.
This novel was a 4 year long research in culturally diverse school district that examines the inconsistency of placement of African American and Hispanic students in special education. This author Beth Harry and Janette Klingner present research - based stories that represent culturally and linguistically diverse students who fall short and are perceived to have impairments. Throughout the book Harry and Klingner studies / observes the children’s experiences,
In the first article chosen, “Why are Nurses Leaving? Findings From an Initial Qualitative Study on Nursing Attrition,” the research method used was qualitative. The specific type of research design used was phenomenology. The participants were interviewed about their person experience of what it was like working as a registered nurse. The research question for this study was, “What is the experience of RNs who leave clinical nursing?” The sample is registered nurses (RN) with a minimum of 1 year of clinical practice and no clinical practice in the last 6 months. The sample size was ten, which were a majority of females (80%),
The purpose of the article’s introduction is to highlight the challenges that students from minority go through in special education schools. Linking his personal experiences as a former special educator, Connor strives to explore the intersection of learning disability, race, and class. The author collected data by conducting interviews with a participant researcher to get his side of the story. Connor planned to compare his LDs experiences with his own.
The purpose of this survey study is to investigate parental involvement of students with disabilities. Parents with special needs children deal with many different factors when it comes to parent involvement in a school setting. The Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s (2005) Model of Parent Involvement, as well as, family structure, race/ethnicity, and family socioeconomic status (SES) were used to gather data. Parents felt that they were involved in their child’s
Because African American children represent a large percentage of students in special education programs, an understanding of their parents’ views on the special education process should be an integral aspect of professional preparation and professional practice (Harry, 2008). This review was conducted to understand the experiences and perceptions of African American parents who have children with disabilities and are receiving special education services. I have reviewed a total of thirteen studies that investigated the experience of Africa America parents. A total of 105 parents/guardian participated in all the studies reviewed and their years of experience with special education system ranges from 2 years to 24 years. What follows is a discussion of the findings from the review.
Following a critical overview of the literature, this chapter outlines the research methodology. It will provide a justification for a qualitative methodological approach and specification of methods employed. Highlighting the appropriateness of interviews and focus groups in relation to the methodology and overall research. It will also provide recognition of their relative strengths and limitations.
Parents have special knowledge about their child that school personnel might be unaware of. This aspect of parental involvement is especially important when applying special education services for a child with disabilities (Smith et al., 2005). That being said, parents need to understand that while they know a lot about their child overall, the school knows a lot about their child in an academic setting. It is very important to have open lines of communication and mutual respect for each other; to be able to bring together these different aspects of the child to create a successful intervention allowing complete access to education.
In the study, “In-Service Teacher Development for Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Pedagogy-the Impact of a Collaborative Project Between K-12 Schools and a Teacher Preparation Institution." Huang, Berg, Romero, and Walker (2016) drew upon a comprehensive deductive quantitative set of data gathered through: “Teacher pre/post surveys and interviews, and instructional plans.” The second study, “Preparing professionals for partnerships with parents of students with disabilities: textbook considerations regarding cultural diversity." Sileo and Prater (1998) used an inductive qualitative analysis to described the collaboration of families, schools, and teachers of students with disabilities, especially when parents and teachers differ in
In conclusion, collaboration with school officials, parents, and the child are very important. Inclusion within the main classroom is vital to nondisabled and disabled students because it creates awareness and understanding of the differences. Labeling students without really getting to know them just jeopardizes their future where their self-esteem is real low. General teachers and ESS teachers need to have that collaboration in order for that child to succeed in school. So everyone needs to act professional and know that ESS students need a lot of help along the
Tisdell (2000) conducted her study also using the qualiative research method. She used a 4.5 – 3 hour taped interview to gather data. The taped interviews were later transcribed for review and analysis. Tisdell’s (2000) study population consist of 46 participants from various ethnic backgrounds. Tisdell’s research study appeared to be theoretical with an intent to determine how the participants spirituality affected their chosen careers in education, in addition to, how they viewed knowledge and education. The vehicle which Tisdell (2000) used for data analysis was the “constant comparative method.” (Merriam, 5998). Riessman (5993) tells us that “Interviews are transcribed to best represent the dynamic nature of the living conversation.”
There is a lack of research that has used a qualitative approach to studying the unique nature of military and family life when raising a child with autism. This study would fill the gap in the literature through deliberation of the unique context in which military families raising a child with autism actively manage everyday life.
The key to any successful school district is the administration. Teachers essentially provide structure, organization, and the background of a child’s future. To educate students with learning disabilities, it is essential that the staff has the training and resources needed for the appropriate people, place, and time (Lazarus) (What is Inclusion, 2001, n.p). It is unrealistic to expect that regular education teachers will always be aware of the latest research or be able to readily adapt the school's
A qualitative approach is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. It uses interviews, participant observation, focus groups, and similar methods. It expresses its research results in narrative form, often relying on illustrative cases and analyzing long passages of text.
A general definition of research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Research is an important part of many people’s lives both personally and professionally. What kind of car to buy? What are the most recent therapies to combat breast cancer? What is the best stock to invest in? Research needs to continually and systematically be conducted for society to move forward. Qualitative research is one type of research “that encompasses a number of philosophical orientations and approaches.” Early in the 20th century, scientists, such as anthropologists and sociologists went out into the world to ask the questions of how and why the societal and cultural world was the way that it was. Inquiry was done to better understand social phenomenon. As time went on, different professional fields such as education, law, health, and social work also embraced qualitative research. Today hundreds of books and journals exist on qualitative research, as well as various strategies, paradigms, and methods for conducting such research.
