I will continue showing respect, empathy and dignity of the patient after graduation. I will make sure to continue behaving professionally throughout my career. It is very important for a healthcare professional to demonstrate professionalism, as once I become pharmacist it will be my responsibility that I reach on time to work, wear dress appropriately and behave in a nice manner to the patient. For example, after graduation I will continue to obey HIPPA law and other state laws which will mandate me to work in a particular way and which will not allowed me to share any personal information of a patient with anyone. Thus, by being punctual, respectful and responsible I will continue to advance my level of expertise in this particular outcome
What does Professionalism mean to me? Professionalism in my term means it is someone who is very dedicated to their profession. It is an important and great decision to follow by the rules and ethics of professionalism. If we did not have anyone that cared about their profession it would cause a lot of problems in our society today. It could cause a lot of disruption in your workplace. In order to abide by professionalism you must take pride in your job, percieve realistic goals and values, and know what your expectations are.
Avis et al (2010) state that historically, only occupations such as Doctors, Solicitors, the Clergy and Bank Managers were worthy of the title of being called a “Professional”. However they go on to say that this has changed over time to the point whereby much more diverse groups are describing themselves within the category of being professional to the point that the term becomes meaningless. That said, they do agree that a professional should hold a set of specific skills and knowledge that are gained through a certain amount of training and “should be used for the benefit of society”. Teachers, lecturers and trainers clearly fit within this remit. Scales (2008) lists professionalism as one of the traits of an effective teacher. He goes on the say that professionalism is multi-faceted, citing the way teachers behave, look, the way interact with their students, how they talk and how they prepare and plan their work all form what he believes makes a professional.
Lifelong professionalism is an ongoing process in a professional’s career in which they build an effective professional image. Maintaining lifelong professionalism is important because it demonstrates to a potential or current employer that I am more than capable in my profession. To maintain this image I will remember throughout my career to always:
Professionalism in the workplace, is the absolute key to having a successful, and smoothly run business. Professionalism is something that must be maintained by every individual within the work setting, especially in health care, whether it is the janitor, activity director, nursing assistant, doctor, or even the head administrator. Professionalism encompasses many aspects, such as teamwork, attitude, environment, knowledge, morals, and ethics.
Working in education has provided me with opportunities to explore the concept of professionalism which is often not well-defined, conceptually or methodologically but is usually distinct from technical ability. Similar to the jury service I believe having peers on the professional committees helps to demonstrate transparency and fairness.
Everywhere you go and in everything you do, professionalism comes in to account in some way or another. Professionalism has been defined as, “a strict adherence to courtesy, honesty and responsibility when dealing with individuals or other companies in the business environment” (Clarke, 2015). When it comes to the career of nursing, professionalism is taken to a whole other level. Not only does professionalism come in to account with your business professionals and peers, but you have patients with whom professionalism is highly practiced as well. Professionalism in nursing means that you are able to handle all the responsibilities given to you in an efficient and proper way. It means that when you are given an order that needs to be carried out by a doctor or a patient who needs your help, you adhere to what is being expected of you in a timely manner. Physicians put trust into nurses in order to carry out orders that are needed to save patients’ lives. If you’re not looked at as professional and responsible, it is going to be very hard to have a successful career. Responsibility is what nursing is all about. Professionalism in nursing means that along with taking on big responsibilities, you have discipline. Discipline in nursing is crucial to being successful. Not only to keep your patients safe, but so that you personally are on the ball and looked at by others as professional, therefore, making you a great nurse. Professionalism means that you have the
The assigned case study displays the sad reality of what has/will go on in the field of health care. In this case there are a number of issues not being corrected all from a lack of handling on the management side. The text Professionalism in Health Care: A Primer for Career Successes provides an outlet of ideas that resonate with the case study as a whole. The assigned chapters demonstrate why Hubert is going through these hardships and in many ways shows ageism as the byproduct of what is going on. Additionally, the chapters assigned provide management solutions in eliminating these workplace problems and show the reader how to cultivate a work environment that benefits everyone.
Excellence in writing has been recognised as the motto in every intellectually engaged works I have been privileged to publish over time.
The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines professionalism as the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. Yet the White Paper on Pharmacy Student Professionalism says it is displaying values, beliefs and attitudes that put the needs of another about your personal needs. There is still another definition. The Medical Professionalism Project says professionalism is the basis of medicine's contract with society. It demands placing the interests of patients above those of the physician, setting and maintaining standards of competence and integrity, and providing expert advice to society on matters of health. In my opinion, a person's attitude, values, and behaviors
One new thing that I have learned in chapter one is academic professionalism. Academic professionalism is really to me is about presenting yourself and knowing what works for you and how to be good at it so that you can be successful through college. One thing that caught my attention while reading it is the dress code. The main reason why the dress code got my attention is because when I was in high school my business teacher had days where we had to dress for success and that included business wear etc. So I’m realizing how important it is to change my style and start dressing smart and get used to it because it will pay off in the long run. That why the academic professionalism is something I learned new. This will affect me in my college courses because I believe if I dress smart and feel confident I well be more comfortable learning and questioning questions in my class I also
The three most important aspects of professionalism for a substitute is appearance, commitment to the students, and commitment to the profession. I listed appearance first because first impressions of how you dress are the most important to go with. Not only does dressing help give a first impression, your attitude toward showing that you care for the students and profession give a lot to say about how professional you are. Having commitment to the students mean showing them that you are there for them and their safety, and to show the students their potential as a worthy member of society. Showing your commitment toward your profession means you are investing time in the profession and not making false statements of your related competency
David Cameron (Uk Prime Minister) argued that nursing has been ‘over academicised’ and the new graduates may not mirror the vocationally driven needs of clinical work (Santry, 2010). Moreover, Crigger & Godfrey (2011) stipulates that professionalism is attached to moral qualities and resilience in practice have not been well linked or researched in nursing fiction. Similarly, Abbott (2010) argues that professional nurses fight among themselves via redefinition of each other’s job, making the profession seem unstructured features. Qualities like bravery, meekness, forgiveness, integrity, and empathy are developed and inherent but professional identity is shifting from these virtues (Crigger & Godfrey, 2011; McCammon & Brody, 2012). Furthermore,
Professionalism can be defined as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.”(Merriam-webster) My interpretation of this definition is that professionalism is a standard that we must hold ourselves accountable to in order to provide the best service. How do we get from a basic understanding of this definition, to practicing and applying professionalism? Major attributes that lead to professionalism can include accountability, communication and reflective practice. Reflective practice in the healthcare system is when “practitioners engage in a continuous cycle of self-observation and self evaluation in order to understand their own actions and the reactions they prompt in themselves” (becoming a better university teacher…). In the day-to-day life, everyone performs a type of reflection whether it is by unconscious thought or by habit. When it is unintentional it is hard to learn and grow from the knowledge that can potentially be gained. Therefore we need to find a way to effectively incorporate reflective practice into our daily lives, especially as radiation therapy students.
There are many barriers in the nursing profession. The many factors that contribute to these limitations have been noticed for centuries, such as the educational standards which were set forth by Isabel Hampton Robb in 1893. Robb set the standards of nursing education and formalized a curriculum (Black, 2014). Today we face several challenges and educational barriers. An important concept within the nursing profession that affects many is the issue of education.
Student professionalism and success are required to work together to motivate the student to be an efficient employee in the future. I am a good example of a student in progress because I always arrive on time to my classes or work; follow any directions from my professors or employers, and follow ethics that influence my professional behavior towards other individuals. These ideas and ethics will benefit me in the future because it will satisfy the requirements of employers and will assist me in to obtaining promotions. Professionalism and success is what humans need to survive in modern society.
