Pursuing A Career In The Healthcare Field

I have decided to pursue a career in health information technology. My eventual goal is to get a job in a medical billing and coding setting. I am lucky enough to have a couple of family members that currently work in this field, so I am ahead of the curve in knowing what to expect and where are good places to apply.

My decision to pursue a career as a physician was not a blinding revelation, being the daughter of two immigrant parents the thought of becoming a physician seemed distant. In high school I pursued to obtain what for me was then the highest education I perceived I would be able to achieve which was going to college and obtaining a bachelor’s degree. As the quote by Ralph Ellison highlights, “When I discover who I am, I’ll be free”. This quote resonates with the start of my second year in college, as I have been able to find my passion for medicine. More specifically, I explored my values and how I wanted to shape my future. Using the SMART method, my long term goal is to continue my work as a CNA while applying for healthcare administrator positions. I would like to work as an administrator for at least 3 years for any medical setting. While working, I will be looking into ways on how I can own and operate a home healthcare agency. According to Marak, (2017), I really don’t need to have experience in the medical industry; I would just need to have the passion for providing care, the marketing savvy, an understanding of business knowledge, and integrity. With my CNA experience, along with my other work experiences, I am half way there.

New skills I would like to learn are public speaking, professional swimmer, learn different languages like spanish, arabic, italian, and other languages. Be better at math because I’m miserable at it. How to play music instruments I've always been fascinated by drums and piano. I would like to learn for my career as a nurse or as a medical assistant are the ability to make your patients feel better or an effective communicator and giving more positive to other people. I want to learn the medical terminology, I am fascinated about it and I want to learn the dosage calculations. I want to learn many things about in medical field. The position that I am interested in applying for, is being a health information officer in a dental board setting in Melbourne, Victoria. Although my ultimate goal is to become a dentist, working in any sector in oral health is advantageous for my career. Certain skills and knowledge that are required to successfully gain this position include: experience in resolving and managing customer enquiries and problems, being meticulous, having effective time management skills and a flexible attitude , being proficient in a variety of programs such as Microsoft Word, and having a high level of accuracy with data entry and word processing.
