Dentistry The profession that I would like to study is dentistry. I am interested in pursuing a career in dentistry because I like to help people and there are many benefits that come with the career path. Dentists tend to have a flexible work schedule, a high salary, and a generous amount of vacation days. Dentistry provides many opportunities to work with people in need of help and live a fulfilled, comfortable lifestyle. A typical day for a dentist can range anywhere from a simple cleaning to a complex surgery. Most dentists work four days a week, but could work more depending on their patients’ needs. During a regular week of work, a dentist will work around forty hours. Dentists perform a variety of work activities each day. Dentists work with many different kinds of tools and machines throughout the day. They examine the patient’s mouth to see if any treatment is necessary. Dentists perform surgery on the gums or on the supporting bones of the mouth. They also pull teeth for patients who are getting braces or for patients wanting their wisdom teeth removed (Dentists U.S.). “Approximately twenty-five percent of all dentists are self-employed” ( Dentists Oklahoma). Almost all dentists are in a private practice. They either work for themselves, or they partner with another dentist who owns his own practice. There are some cases where dentists work for a dentistry chain like Smartmouth. The need for dental care is continuing to grow. As people get older, they need more dental assistance for example dentures. The employment outlook is positive because most of the dentists are nearing retirement. The demand for new, young dentists is as high as it will ever be. “The employment of dentists is projected to grow 16 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations”
For my senior project I have explored the career of a Dental Hygienist, who is a licensed dental professional who is registered with a dental care association within their country of practice. Their duty is to clean teeth, examine patients for signs and symptoms of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventive dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral cavity health. Dental hygienist occupation has many important aspects to their job, which makes it a very rewarding occupation. According to my research dental hygienists is one of the top career choices in America, being so, over the years the career has evolved into a high demanding occupation.
Ever wonder why your dentist doesn’t actually clean your teeth? It’s cause that’s the job of the dental hygienist. They are specialist at keeping your teeth and gums healthy and clean. My goal of becoming a dental hygienist will soon come to pass. All I need is dedication, motivation, ambition, and understanding. This latter element becomes very important when discussing this career field. The most basic elements that one must understand when considering becoming a dental hygienist are threefold; first, I must possess the education requirements that are necessary for admittance to this field. Dentistry involves a variety of guidelines and oral practices to help people maintain a good oral hygiene. This career is far more than just making your teeth pretty and clean. “Dentists in private practice manage their own offices. They may supervise other workers such as receptionists, bookkeepers, dental assistants, and dental hygienists. They may order equipment and supplies” (Dentists). This quote shows that Dentists have even more responsibilities than you might assume. Being a Dentist consists of practices you probably aren’t very familiar with at this point in your life. These quotes show a couple different practices that are used in this career. “Endodontists perform root-canal therapy, by which they remove the nerves and blood supply from injured or infected teeth” (Dentistry). “Oral and maxillofacial radiologists diagnose diseases in the head and neck through the use of imaging technologies” (Dentistry). “Dentists may fit dental appliances or provide preventive care” (America’s). All of this might sound quite challenging and stressful. To overcome the stress that comes with being a Dentist, you will have to be patient. Determination is also a great key to success. If you are patient, responsible, and determined while working as a Dentist, you will be very successful.
As all Americans’ know, job stability is close to a foreign language. Not many people choose the job of a dental hygienist, though it is perfect due to the population increases and high demand. At the beginning at 2016, it was looked upon as one of the fastest growing occupations, dental wise. If one was to be occupied by this jobs, their services would be demanded frequently, whether you are finishing your certification program or in your career already.
The career I have chosen is Dental Hygiene. I am very interested in this career because I have the opportunity to teach people and educate them about the health of their mouth. Some of the things that dental hygienists do include taking x-rays, cleaning patients teeth, educating patients on the benefits of good oral hygiene, and treating periodontal diseases of the mouth. The importance of a healthy mouth truly affects the entire body. Plus everyone would enjoy a pretty smile and a good set of straight teeth.
At this time in my life, the career chose that I find more interesting is a Dental Hygienist. As a Dental Hygienist, I will have to work hard to succeed in my career. If I don’t go to college I won’t get a good education and I will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of different types of jobs.

They do require fewer years than a dentist but as a graduate they have all the experience in the procedures that they will be performing. Also since it is less time as a dentist a mid level dental provider carries less debt the a dentist, but there education is still focused on a lot.
There are many things that motivated me to pursue in the dental field, but one of most intresting things to me would be how a dental assistant helps, how they do the radiographs and makes sure all the proper equipment is ready for the doctor Nothing makes me happier than seeing a patient happy after getting their teeth cleaned, or getting them taken care of when they have an uncomfortable pain. I chose this field because I enojoy helping people and making a difference.
