Apple Computers founder Steve Jobs passed away recently, and news outlets paid tribute to him by listing his accomplishments, and playing video of him speaking. One of these clips showed Mr. Jobs delivering a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005, and the speech included a treasure trove of information. In one of my favorite parts of his address, Jobs said” you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” (Jobs, 2005) This piece advice is simple to understand intellectually, but it also proves difficult to follow. However, ENTP’s have little interest in implementing the steps required to implement their ideas. They are less interested in details, and can find it difficult to follow through on their plans. ENTP’s are fluent conversationalists, and enjoy debating important issues. Devil’s advocate is a common terms used for this type since they will take different sides of an issue just to continue the discussion. Some describe ENTP as the “Lawyer” type since they possess the ability to turn their intuition, and perceptions, into logical, objective action. Overall, ENTP’s are optimistic, clever, theoretical, and curious. I find most descriptions of ENTP's are an accurate description of me. I am highly adaptive to a broad range of situations. I am good at reading people’s emotions, and am able to fit in with many different groups. I also am very curious about why things are a certain way. I do not accept conventional wisdom unless I understand why it is accepted as such. This desire to understand, and my desire to match wits, contributes to my playing devil’s advocate. I am perfectly capable of taking a position I do not agree with for the purpose of debate. When there is disagreement, I desire to understand all sides of an argument. Sometimes this desire is just an effort to gather information to strengthen my own side. This enjoyment of debate, makes some people uncomfortable, and can be one of the few
