The most familiar type of pediatrician refers to the general pediatrician, who administers immunizations, identifies general issues, and if necessary, refers children to specialists if the problems reacher out of their capabilities and/or jurisdiction. These specializations include but are not limited to pediatric infectious disease specialists, pediatric hematology specialists, and pediatric gastroenterology specialists (Types of Pediatrician Specialties | Enlighten Me). Pediatric infectious diseases specialists diagnose, treat, and quarantine deadly, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, meningitis, AIDS, and respiratory infections. Pediatric hematology specialists are commonly known among cancer and hemophilia patients, as they treat and diagnose issues involving cancer and blood, and attempts to prescribe treatment based on the severity and urgency of the issue. Pediatric gastroenterology specialists are perhaps the most commonly known of the specialists, as they diagnose allergies and intolerances such as lactose intolerance, as they specialize in treating issues involving the digestive system, liver, and nutrition, and are known for their tests for allergies, intolerances, and diagnosis of issues related to vomiting and bowel problems. Becoming a pediatrician typically requires at least 3-8 years of residency training in pediatrics, along with the four years required to achieve a bachelor’s degree (How to Become a Pediatric Doctor: Education and Career Roadmap.). To even begin one’s journey into pediatrics however, one must pass the MCAT, a nightmarish medical school entrance examination assessment, and after multiple years of training, an anxiety inducing final examination.
