Put Your Mask On First
You may have heard these words before and not given them much thought. Today, you have an opportunity to think about them from a fresh perspective.
If you are traveling with children, or are seated next to someone who needs assistance, place the mask on yourself first, then offer assistance. Continue using the mask until advised by a uniformed crew member to remove it.
This is part of the safety briefing that I have heard way too many times in recent days. Upon a quick review of my flight activity on United’s website I was a little surprised to realize that I have flown almost 92,000 miles on United or another Star Alliance carrier since the beginning of the year. And I have flown another 15,000 miles on other carriers

They are fairly dry and emotionless. Unlike some of the funny stuff you hear coming out of Southwest Airlines, United doesn’t see a lot of benefit in humor.
The part about the oxygen mask caused me to pause and ponder a bit recently. The flight attendant asks you to place your mask over your face FIRST. You are asked to do that BEFORE you offer assistance to your children or anyone else who may need your help. I am not sure about you, but that is a concept that would be hard and seem at odds with the heart of a loving father if my children or grandchildren were onboard with me.
What is the Leadership Lesson?
The leadership lesson is that we must realize it is important as leaders that we focus on ourselves from time to time in order that we will have sufficient energy and resources to lead and be a force for change and growth in those around us.
How do we do that?
Here are 5 things that you can do to put your oxygen mask on first:
Go to bed early tonight — There is nothing quite as rejuvenating as a good night’s sleep. Do yourself a favor. Go to bed early tonight and don’t set an alarm for tomorrow morning. I know that not everyone has the kind of job where that is a possibility for you. But, most folks have “Sick Days.” Some folks call them “Mental Health Days” and if you have the opportunity to take one, then take
Patients who have suffered a traumatic injury may have a variety of different fluids and objects in their throat that could be obstructing it (Stephens, 2011). For example there could be blood, bodily fluids, and even teeth is the patient broke any teeth (Stephens, 2011). In order to clear this persons airway first the paramedic should observe for any large foreign bodies obstructing the airway, and if they can try to finger sweep it out (Stephens, 2011). If there are any fluids obstructing the patients airway the paramedic will suction the patients airway. The proper way to suction is to not go past the base of the patients tongue, and to suction as you are pulling the device out (Stephens, 2011). The maximum amount of time to suction an adults airway is fifteen seconds, and the maximum amount of time you can suction a child's airway is ten seconds (Stephens, 2011). The medic should always keep the suction on hand even after an airway has been inserted in case the patients airway needs to be suctioned
After assessing the victim?s airway, now you should check for breathing. To check for breathing, place your ear over the mouth looking toward the chest. This will allow you to listen for air movement, feel for air movement on your cheek, and look for chest rise. If the victim is breathing adequately, you should roll him or her on their left side. By doing so this puts them in the recovery position and permits him or her to breathe adequately. This also prevents aspiration if the victim vomits. If the victim is not breathing, give two breathes, watching for chest rise. Give breathes over a second, wait a second, then give another breathe. While doing so, you should not hyperventilate the victim.
This week explored and learned that there are desirable leadership traits to acquire, that becoming a leader can be a conscious process and that being a leader also means to owe respect and have a responsibility to others.
What I learned to do right. I put on the right size mask, because if you don't have the right mask you will not be able to seal the mask. I check the mask before putting on air now. I leaned to tighten the mask too, because if you don't tighten it it falls down.
“In order to be a good leader, there are two things to remember. Lead from the Front and always set the Example. From these two leadership principles, everything else will fall into place.”
The instructions given on an airline are for the straightforward logic that if you run out of oxygen by delaying putting on your mask you are putting yourself in a situation where you are unable to help others. The oxygen mask as a metaphor for my personal life, I would interpret as the importance of self-care especially in the pressures of today’s society. Setting apart a short amount of time in the hectic and chaotic world to focus on my wellbeing has significant benefits to my productivity and quality of work. It is common to brag about the extensive running ‘to-do’ list of the week and it is generally admired by others to see you filling your time. But I believe there is beauty in taking some time to workout, reflect, or participate in
GAS ! Gas ! Hurry up , guys! - With hand clumsy procedure that gas masks
Place the respirator in your hands so that the nose piece will be at your fingertips. Grasp the respirator using your hand to allow the headbands to dangle beneath your hand. Potion the respirator beneath your chin while keeping the nose piece upward. Locate the top strap and pull it over your head until it is resting on the back snd top part of your head. The bottom strap should be placed underneath your ears around your neck, The straps should not be crisscrossed. Position your pointer and middle fingers on both hands, at the top metal portion of the nose clip (if equipped). Mold the nose piece to your face by sliding your fingertips down each side of the metal portion. Position one hand on top of the other, over the respirator. Test the
If there are no signs of life, place a breathing barrier (if available) over the victim's mouth.I would usually use an air mask that EMT's carry with them in the ambulance or in their side pocket. Give two rescue breaths and make sure to keep the air way open. Breathe slowly, as this will air go in the lungs not the stomach.Every time you give rescue breathe, keep your eye on the victim's chest. If the rescue breath goes in, you should see the chest slightly rise and also feel it go in.Then give a second rescue breath. If the breath does not go in, re-position the head and try again. After you successfully gave two rescue breaths, prepare for the hardest physical part of CPR.
Leadership lessons summarize that anywhere you go in the world people are always seeking for leaders. Without leadership the world get nowhere; therefore, we need excellent leadership. The Iliad is full of important leader who keep the war moving. In today's society soilder
Being helped to breathe by a ventilator means that you will usually need to be sedated. Ventilators can offer different levels of breathing assistance. If you only need help breathing for a couple of days, it is likely you will have an endotracheal tube from the ventilator to your mouth or nose. The tube will usually be held in place behind your neck as was the case with my patient. However, if you need help with breathing for more than a few days, you may have a short operation called a tracheostomy. This replaces the tube in your mouth with a shorter tube that is placed directly into your trachea. As well as being more comfortable,
My mask features materials such as white tissue paper, pearl balls, silver glitter, sparkly paper, silver flowers and silver pen. These materials were used on my mask to give it a bright and pure white look. Masks were worn at masquerade balls for the purpose of hiding ones true identity, wearing a mask like this would give the illusion that the wearer was perfect, or angelic. Except, for around the eyes where I also used a black marker and red glitter glue for the pattern on there. Generally the only recognisable feature on someones face while wearing a mask, are the eyes. Which happens to be the darkest part of the mask. Therefor, the mask is saying that beneath this pure and plain mask, is a flawed person, a real person.
Easy techniques to enable patients to enhance smooth breathing process through tracheostomy(small incision in the windpipe to ensure breathing flow). However, doctors also advise patients to opt for BiPAP therapy by wearing ultra-light mask.
If you panic, you’ll want to know the best ways you can help in an emergency.
Superior leaders reflect on their experiences and create leadership lessons base on what they have learned. When I read the section Implications for Leaders I immediately thought back to my conversation with my wife and how valuable this practice has been for me the first couple months of the school year. It is not as if I have never reflected on my work, but to purposefully spend time reflecting on situations from the day is life changing. The late Jim Valvano so eloquently said in his last public speech during the ESPN ESPYS “we should spend some time
