What makes a hero. He has been through many journeys and survived them all, by using some of his attributes, like his strengths, weaknesses, and his conflicts that he faces.

I think the one heroic character trait that fits Odysseus best is “cunning”. There are many stories from “The Wanderings” that shows just how cunning Odysseus is; from tricking monsters like the cyclops, to pretending to be a beggar so he could reclaim his kingdom. Some of these stories may not sound like much but without Odysseus’s cunning trait things would have ended up completely different. If Odysseus didn’t have his cunning trait he wouldn’t have been able to trick the suitors into thinking he was a beggar, but because Odysseus is such a cunning hero he is able to have much more power than others.

A Homeric epic hero is considered to be above a normal human being. The traits of a typical epic hero are strength, loyalty, courage, and intelligence. In fact, the Macmillan Dictionary for Students defines a hero as "one who is admired and looked up to for valor, achievements, and noble qualities" (483). Odysseus fulfills all of the requirements for an epic hero and more. He demonstrates his ability to be an articulate speaker, and his poise aids him on his journey. His endless curiosity has gotten him into dilemmas, while his superb displays of strength and cunningness have helped both him and his crew escape danger. Odysseus, the main character and the hero of the epic, The Odyssey, is the leader of a fleet of men who tend to get themselves in many wild shenanigans and setbacks. Although he does get and at his men, he understands the human nature of his men, and do want the best for them. This task of keeping his men alive is made easier by the fact that Odysseus is naturally a heroic person and leader. He is willing to do or go anywhere to ensure the safety of his men and a higher chance of arriving at their home, Ithaka. In Homer’s The Odyssey, there are a lot of traits displayed that are considered important in ancient Greek culture. These are shown by many different characters, but mostly by Odysseus (he is, after all, the main character in the epic poem). Odysseus is the epitome of a Greek ruler: he has a lot of admirable traits. His only fault is his hubris, but that is overcome and taken care of. Throughout Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus displays wisdom combined with strong loyalty and inspiring leadership through the evident trust of his men and the ability to conquer any challenges that he may face along his journey back to Ithaka.

After reading the Odyssey, and hearing about all of the actions that Odysseus took part in, the conclusion had been met that, even though he made some bad decisions, Odysseus is generally a strong leader. One event that show his guidance is when Odysseus was the leader of a group of men when they went together, bravely, into the rough Trojan War. During the war, Odysseus showed his strong leadership by never giving up on his men, he told his men to keep fighting and to keep moving. Although there were some events in which he did not make the best decision, or had to make a decision that might seem bad but will be good in the long run. Odysseus fulfills the description of a hero perfectly. He’s courageous, clever, noble, and admired for his outstanding achievements. He’s done many heroic things such as defeat his enemy,Troy, rescue his men several times from witches, cyclopes, sirens etc, and returning home while reuniting with his family and ruling Ithaca.

Bravery, loyalty, honesty, intelligence, responsibility and faith are all traits that a great hero or leader should have, but does Odysseus live up to that? When reading Homer's, The Odyssey or watching the movie it is very clear that Odysseus is in fact a terrible hero and leader. In the book and movie Odysseus shows every clear sign of being a terrible hero those traits being he’s vain, cocky, stubborn, impulsive, selfish, unfaithful and lustful. Why is this topic important? The reason this is important to talk about is because Odysseus is portrayed as a great leader but when looking at his qualities he really isn’t and no one wants kids thinking that having his traits are a good thing.
