In addition to the idea that the Cullen’s express devout loyalty to one another, it is also important to note that they possess extreme self-control in all that they do. Even from the founding days of The Cullen’s, their rule about not eating human flesh demonstrates extreme self-control. Every single day the vampires struggle between their greatest desire, human blood, and peacefully existing in a mortal community. This overarching theme of resisting their craving, then is played out in several details in the novel. One specific example is when Edward restrains from his initial lure towards Bella is when he switches out of her biology class (Meyer, Twilight, 89). In one instance when Edward and Jacob were working together, Jacob was taunting Edward by creating inappropriate romantic thoughts in his head about Bella. Edward, having the capability to read minds, was infuriated, but restrains from killing Jacob (Meyer, Eclipse, 494). Although self-control is a quality that has been proven to be trained and can improve over time, similar to the way Carlisle is immune to blood almost completely, there is also research that shows that individuals who are in love are more likely to demonstrate self-controls that individuals who are “in lust” (Minjung). In Minjung’s article, “How Love and Lust Influence Self-Control,” he discusses this debate. He says “Forster et al. explored various possible differences between people who were primed with love versus those who were primed with lust; and the only difference they found was in temporal perspectives” (Minjung).
