Carolyn Lemens Ms. Phillips English 9 HN, W6 September 25, 2015 The Alchemist’s IB Traits In Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist the character, the alchemist, displays the IB learner traits of balance, reflectiveness, and open-mindedness. The alchemist shows many reflective qualities when he thinks,”Times rush past, and so do the caravans, thought the alchemist, as he waited hundreds of people and animals arrive at the oasis” (Coelho 137). He is clearly thinking of a philosophical level, which denotes reflectiveness. Not only that, but he is able to analyze the lives of so many people and quantify it into one thought. He is also a balanced person because of his careful observation of the world and in specific, the desert. “He
The quote I will analyze and relate to me is “We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it's our life or possessions and property. ”(page 76). This quote applies to Santiago’s journey, as he had to give up most of his possessions to continue his adventure. The specific events I will be analyzing are Santiago selling his sheep and the thief who stole his money. At the beginning of the book, Santiago always wanted to travel.
The Alchemist, a novel written by Paulo Coelho teaches us about the importance of self-discovery and exploration by taking us through the journey of a young Andalusian shepherd, Santiago. Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 24th 1947, to Pedro Quiema Coelho de Souza, an engineer, and his wife, Lygia, a homemaker. Paulo early on had dreamed of an artistic career and then after his surroundings in Jesuit school, he discovered his true vocation was to be a writer (Coelho 195). Upon telling his mom, she told him that his father was an engineer, a reasonable and logical man and had a clear view of the world. At the age of 16, Paulo’s opposition against following a traditional path led to his parents committing him into a mental institution (Paulo Coelho). To satisfy his parents, he enrolled in law school. However, it led him to mental illness and failing his career. After many years, he gave a shot at his dream profession and started to write. Paulo wrote The Pilgrimage: Diary of Magus which described his experiences and his discovery that the extraordinary occurs in the lives of ordinary people. He was the recipient of numerous international awards, amongst them the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum. The Pilgrimage was published in 1987 and The Alchemist was published in 1988, a year after. Both novels appeared on the best sellers list but The Alchemist continued to sell more copies than any other book in Brazilian literary history. The Alchemist,
Some may refer to The Alchemist as a best-selling novel written by Paulo Coelho which explains the ideas of having a dream, or Personal Legend, and going through obstacles to conquer it. The book starts off like any other, introducing and describing the main characters, in this case Santiago is the first to share the interest of peers reading the story. He is said to be a small town shepherd boy who will do anything for his flock of sheep. In the opening scene of the story, Santiago takes his flock to an abandoned church and lies down under a sycamore tree hoping to get some rest. He is soon woken up from a disturbing dream which foreshadows further into the story of his own Personal Legend. Later in the book, Santiago is faced with multiple tests to be successful in finding his treasure. “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure” (Coelho 15). Paulo continues to add characters in the book that help Santiago throughout his journey.
Personality: This quote shows Santiago's determination to marry the merchant’s daughter since he knows that the father probably would not let her marry someone like him, a shepherd who’s always away selling his wool.
The phrase used by the narrator implies that even when times are difficult, a person who has faith and commitment will achieve its goal. Just like the novel, Santiago runs into numerously difficult situations when trying to find the destination to the treasure he dreamed of.
Santiago, a young shepherd, keeps getting a recurring dream about a little kid who leads him to treasure in Egypt. He decides to ask a gypsy about what his dream means, and she just tells him to go to Egypt to find his treasure. He then meets a mysterious man who happens to know everything about Santiago. He says that he is the King of Salem, and he talks to Santiago about omens. He tells Santiago to go achieve his personal legend and gives him two stones, Thummim and Urim. Santiago sells his flock of sheep and buys a ticket to Tangier. When he arrives at North Africa he is robbed by a man he meets at a bar. He decides that he needs to earn some money, so he finds a crystal merchant.
The protagonist in this novel is the main character, Santiago Shepherd. He is known for traveling to find his personal legend and learning life lessons during his journey. Santiago’s qualities of being a dreamer and chaser is how I can relate to him. Santiago strives to achieve his personal legend and continues to not give up. I can relate to Santiago because when I set a goal and standard for myself, I do not give up until I have reached it. Santiago was given everything and was happy as a shepherd until Melchizedek (King of Salem) came along and challenged Santiago to go find his personal legend and purpose in life. I can relate my life to Santiago’s life because growing up, I have always had everything I wanted and it always came so easy to me until I was rejected from a program is when I acknowledged that getting what you want is not easy and hard work is required. Just as Santiago thought getting to Egypt would be easy, he had to work hard in order to get there by earning enough money, similar to me where I was constantly buried in books to get to where I wanted to be. There were moments just like Santiago had where he wanted to give up, I felt the same way but I continued to push and not give up. Coelho includes many beliefs, values and ideologies into this novel, sending readers a positive message. Spirituality is a value that is mentioned throughout the “The Alchemist”, involving Allah; “But that disaster taught me to understand that word of Allah: people
Santiago: the young shepherd who wants to do his dreams which are finding treasure in the pyramid. The Alchemist: 200-year-old who lives in the oasis. The Alchemist In Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist; Santiago’s intelligence, determination, and love all help him on his journey. These characteristics were developed by people that came into his life at the right time. Intelligence helped him to understand the soul of the world. His unbreakable will motivated him to whatever he had to do in order to achieve his personal legend. Fatima, the girl he loved, gave him the necessary love and support that he needed in order to continue on his journey.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart. ”- Helen Keller (Educator, Journalist). To some people it’s just another hollow quote expected from a cheap Valentine’s Day card, but some might interpreted as the most beautiful things in the world must be felt with the heart, not with the worldly senses, for example children to some people are the most beautiful people in the world and others think that children are demon spawn from the depths of hades. In the novel, The Alchemist by Pablo Coelho, is a story about Santiago, a young Shepard boy finding treasure at the pyramids of Giza while dealing with obstacles physically and spiritually, causing him to make a difficult decision
In the beginning of his journey, the merchants unwillingness showed Santiago that he did not need an exterior force to push him towards his dreams, just his self-belief. Then, the Englishman taught him that as long as he had determination and wanted something, the Soul of the World would guide him to it. While crossing the desert, Santiago’s attention to all the components instilled the message to notice all details in life. Fatima’s leniency towards Santiago leaving showed that no matter how far a couple is, true love prevails, as Santiago eventually returned to Fatima at the end. The final lesson Santiago learned from turning into the wind and circling back to his beginning, was that no matter how impossible a dream or task seems, if you have faith and drive it will lead you to success. The combination of Santiago’s newfound confidence, faith, and focus made him a wiser, more mature person that differs from the young, uncertain boy he was

The death penalty is arguably one of the most controversial issues of our time. Currently, only eighteen states and Washington D.C. have abolished the death penalty. However, the question remains: what does research say for or against the death penalty? In 2009, a study was done that found the statistic that 88% of criminologists believed that capital punishment is not a deterrent to murder (Radelet and Lacock, 2009). The majority of research also points to the conclusion that the journey from arrest, to trial, to execution is extremely expensive, even more so than that of a life sentence. Finally, who considers the people tasked with performing the execution? What about their mental health? Through examining the death penalty’s facts, deterrence,
