Quote : 1 "This is a valley of ashes-a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operation from your sight." Quote: "Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once...It's more that he was a German spy during the war...It couldn't be that because he was in the American army during the war...You look at him sometime when he thinks nobody's looking. I'll bet he killed a man." Page 48 Why I chose it: The guests at Gatsby's party have heard rumors about him. Because they've never met him, they believe all of the things they hear about him. There are several conflicting ideas within the group. some believe he was a German spy, but others believe he was in the American army. He can't be all of these people at once. He is not a secret agent or a murderer or a German spy. He is a normal man who grew up in the Mid-West on a farm; a man who wasn't happy being the son of farmers; a man who decided to fabricate his own life. The fact that his imagination never accepted them as his real parents is unusual. How many people do you know who don't accept the people who raised you as your real parents? They might not have had the affluent life that Gatsby dreamed of, but they don't seem like bad people.
