In Marie Lu’s Legend, Day shows his true character when he faces tough obstacles and rigorous tasks throughout the novel. For example, Day’s valor/bravery shows when Day rushes into the hospital to find the cure for his family. This shows that without a care for his own well-being he is looking for what's best for the ones he cares about. This also shows that even though he knew the consequences he still decided to look for the greater good.
Marie Lu’s novel, Legend, is focused on two main characters, Day (Daniel Atlan Wing) and June Iparis. Day is a criminal on the run for stealing from the Republic while June, on the other hand, is an elite student at Drake University at the age of fifteen and the Republic’s most prized prodigy. Day watches his family from afar because they have been led to believe that he is dead, he one day sees that his family has a deadly plague. This leads Day to believe that he has to go steal plague medicine from the hospital. June and her older brother, Metias, are orphans, since Metias is a captain in the government, this always leaves June at home alone or at school acting out. On the night that Day decides to steal the medicine, Metias is on duty and
Ms. Luella Bates Washington Jones is her name. She is a very strong, influential, and kind. She works at a beauty shop. She is large and carries a large purse containing everything she needs in it everywhere she goes. When she was walking down the street, a boy named Roger came behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The bag was too heavy, therefore he lost his balance and fell down. In page 1, paragraph 1, lines 3-5, the author states "...a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with the single tug the boy gave it from behind. But the boy's weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell...". Ms. Luella then took him to her house to teach him a lesson. Her accent suggests that she's African-American.
When thinking about black actresses in the 1930s through 1950s, a few names may come to mind like Nina McKinney, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, and Hattie McDaniel. However, many other black actresses have graced the big screen including Suzette Harbin, Theresa Hams, Ethel Moses, Mae Turner, and Hilda Simms just to name a few. Many of these talented actresses differ in their career paths, but they all endured some form of racism and sexism which made it laborious for them to thrive in their careers. By the Way, Meet Vera Stark represents the hardships of black actresses during the 1930s through 1950s. The protagonist, Vera Stark, persistently tries to prove to the people around her that she has star quality for show business. However, she does not reach her potential because of her race. Although she obtains some gigs, the gigs demean black women during that time. The offensive parts for black actresses vary from mammy to slave woman to seductress. The following roles offered black actresses’ opportunities to one day acquire star making roles. Unfortunately, those roles did not apply to black actresses. Only white actors and actresses experienced that fortuity. By the Way, Meet Vera Stark exposes Hollywood’s misconduct of black actresses and further explains the lack of black representation today. Indeed, roles for black actresses have increased since the 1930s through 1950s; however the roles have become more stereotypical like the obnoxious black woman, the token black
In the book, Champion, the author Marie Lu uses symbolism, dialogue and inner thinking. In this book, June works for the government and Day used to be a criminal to survive. The people in the country love Day so the government hires him to give hope to people who have lost it since the war between the Republic and the Colonies isn’t going so well for them. Meanwhile, Day and June start to fall in love with each other, but Day is still grieving for his family that has died because of June.
Timidity plays a big part in the first portion of the novel. Clara Lemlich seems to be nothing more than a timid young girl working in her family's shop, but she proves to be more than what meets the eye. Clara is full of aspiration and yearns for an education, but she learns to keep these hopes and dreams to herself due to her severely stern parents. On page 14, Clara expresses herself by saying “How can I tell Mama who toils sunup to sundown to be a good mother a good wife that this life (her life) is not enough for me, that I dream instead of words ideas a life that stretches far beyond the bounds of this shtetl?” Clara seems to be torn between disappointing her beloved parents, and showing them who she really is, but most importantly
Growing up, Perry suffered “brutal physical abuse from his father and severe sexual abuse from several adults” (Tyler ). Dressing as a drag queen to fulfill the role of his most reputable and recognizable character, Madea, a no-nonsense, thuggishly tough matriarch, Tyler Perry flirts with gender roles and challenges societal beliefs on masculinity within the black world. In Forbes’ most recent list of the world’s one hundred most powerful celebrities, Perry is highlighted at twenty-two, alongside Hollywood’s most notable celebrities, including his close friend and reigning champion of Forbes’ number one spot for five consecutive years—Oprah Winfrey. Despite his vast success, Tyler Perry still receives flak from judgmental skeptics who challenge his masculinity as a man of color. Due to his acting role as Madea, some skeptics believe Mr. Perry is less of a man as he dresses in drag for a character in his plays and is suspected to be homosexual. This not only points him out individually, but it also creates stereotypes grounded from this source of media to the African American males. Grounded with integrity, black culture must celebrate rather than condemn every aspect of its people.
The biggest issue that Hollywood currently is facing is its lack of diversity both in front of and behind the camera. Very few opportunities are offered to minorities in the entertainment industry, so it needs to be celebrated when someone who lacks the same chances as a white male is able to make their voice heard. Director Ava DuVernay is one of those artist who refused to be silenced. Ava is a black female director, screenwriter, film marketer, and film distributer. The majority of her narrative films feature black female characters that are navigating their way through life and learn about themselves as they go along. She began her film career with a music documentary and worked
For nearly twenty years, Beyoncé has lived her life in the public eye yet she has always kept her cool, been submissive, and rather quiet when it came to her personal endeavors however after releasing the film “Lemonade”, we are able to see her in a vulnerable light. In Jeremy Helliger’s article: “Dear Beyhive: Stop Whining. Beyoncé Still Hasn’t Earned Her Album Of The Year Grammy” he addresses the idea that although Beyoncé was able to encourage black women to be proud and free, she also she missed the mark by adding raunchy, over the top content to her vulnerability.
Many black entertainers believed that they needed to advocate against racial discrimination and white supremacy for every nation since it wasn’t just a problem for the U.S.. They believed that their efforts could achieve decolonization of other nations and promote independence for all. In response to violent events that were overtaking the U.S., black women activist-entertainers used their platform to expose the injustice of racial discrimination and promoted the civil rights movement. For example, Miriam Makeba used her platform and created music to broadcast content and their own perspective on the global racial issues toward their consumers. Another example would be Cicely Tyson, a high-fashion model who used her position to expand the boundaries of black beauty by using her hair and clothing as valuable props. She challenged what it meant to be a black woman and how race and sexuality played intersecting
“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.”
This movie is amazing and inspirational to other young black women, it shows that you many struggle but if you keep going your dreams and hard work will be recognize. This film touch on the gender norms and racial norms, which has strong connection to the four reading I choice to critical review this blog. This movie has strong connection to the Gaga Feminism theory, the concept is “a set of wholesale changes that may be most obvious in the realm of gender norms but that also stretch too many other realms of everyday experience and that call for improvisational feminism that keeps pace with the winds of political change.” Hidden-figures proved that Black women can do whatever they want if they put their mind to it. This is breaking down what society has deem as the normal way of doing this.
