Ms. Rhodenizer Advanced Biology 11 April 2016 The Rabies Virus For many people, being outside in the great outdoors can be very fun and relaxing. It can be a time to get away from your busy schedule, a constant work routine, or simply just to get some fresh air. There are numerous activities and projects an individual could possibly do outside. Including playing sports, hunting, hiking and even just relaxing. Many times though, when people are outside in contact with nature, they are also in contact with various animals. Even though animals can be cute, cuddly and even resourceful, they can still be very dangerous. Animals can be dangerous if they have been exposed to a certain type of virus or disease than can be transferred from animals …show more content…
This order contains viruses with a nonsegmented, negative stranded RNA genome. Inside of this group, many viruses with a distinct “bullet” shape are classified inside of the Rhabdoviridae family. That particular family includes at least three different types of mamul viruses: the Lyssavirus, the Ephemerovirus, and the vesculouirus. What populations are at risk for this virus Almost all mammals are at risk of the rabies virus. As humans though, there is not really a possible way to be totally immune from the rabies virus. Unless you totally close yourself off from any type of animal, wild or domestic, there is no way to be totally sure you won’t have even the smallest chance of getting the virus. All types of people, of all ages and in all areas are all possibly at risk of being exposed to the rabies virus. The best way to be careful and to ensure you don’t get the virus, is to make sure you stay away from animals you don’t know very much about, or animals that are acting strange. It is well described in writings by Egyptians dating back to 2300 B.C.In the earlier part of this century, New Jersey had a large problem with canine rabies. In 1939, the worst year for recorded cases of dog rabies, 675 dogs and four humans died of rabies. In 1942, a rabies program focused on the mass vaccination of dogs and pick-up of stray animals was initiated. As a result of these efforts, New Jersey experienced its last case of the canine rabies strain in 1956. In 1960, the first case of rabies in bats was detected in the State. Since 1966, the number of rabid bats per year has ranged from 20 to 55 and between 2% and 5% of the bats submitted to the state laboratory for testing were positive for rabies.” The rabies virus has been around for a long time and they have been almost all over the
Rabies is spread through animals bites of an infected animal. Symptoms involve fever, headache nausea, etc. The animals that can trasmit rabies are cats, dogs, wolves, bats, and more. The reason why rabies is called hydrophobia, “fear of water”, due to how in one of the symptons of rabies, a person will not be able to swallow liquids which causes
In fact, Poe had a cat living with him, but after Poe died the cat died of starvation not rabies. (New York Times 189). The cat was tested for rabies but the tests showed no sign of rabies. In the time period that Poe lived in there were no vaccines for animals. (New York Times 190).
One of my sources is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which is the national health institution of the United States. It is a federal agency which is under the Department of Health and Human Services and its headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia. The goals of this institution is to protect the public from diseases by means of research, prevention, and vaccinations. It was written on April 22, 2011. I accessed this source on September 21, 2016. The information content is great and it contains is the generalization of rabies and its diagnosis.
Identify the virus- The virus mentioned in the article is known by the name Calicivirus. Calicivirus is also known as Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus or RHDV.
The pathogen - West Nile virus belongs to the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus and is part of an antigenic complex of Japanese encephalitis viruses. According to the classification of human-pathogenic microorganisms WNV belongs to II group of pathogenicity. Pathogen - flavivirus has an icosahedral shape, the approximate size is 40-50nm. Flavivirus has a single-stranded RNA, has a protein coat an enveloped capsid. Based on the differences of the nucleotide and amino acid sequences currently distinguish at least five genotypes WNV. Well-preserved frozen and dried state. Die at a temperature above 56 C after 30 min.
Many authors have written stories about rabies. Rabid is the name of a non-fiction book describing a man’s altercation with a rabid raccoon. One author by the name of Max Brooks, wrote a novel called World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War which was written about a global disease. Rabies is a scary, neurological disease that comes from infected animals. If a human comes into contact with rabies, they may suffer from being fatigue, speech impediments, loss of coordination and vision disturbances.
His interest in rabies began when he eleven years old. In October of 1831, a rabid wolf ravaged through Pasteur’s town, biting and attacking anything in its way. Young Pasteur witnessed this tragic event and never forgot the seventeen dogs and the six children that were harmed. Around fifty years later, Pasteur’s drive to find a rabies bacillus was still going strong yet throughout France is was believed that the experiment was inevitable for failure Rabies is a viral and contagious disease. This did not stop Pasteur’s lab from making progress in their experimentation.
Even though there was no evidence of an bite. Reports say that around “one-fourth of rabies victims reportedly cannot remember being bitten,” and “ after an infection, the symptoms can take up to an year to appear.”(NYT Sept. 15, 1996 P. 8) And this is backed up even more by the description of the rabies virus as a “Swift and brutal killer.” and adding in the fact of “most patients die in a few days.” All of this can be taken as sufficient evidence to bring proof to this statement.
Even though rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Estonia, it is not a major risk to most people but:
A fast-acting shot (rabies immune globulin) can prevent the virus from infecting you. Part of this injection is given around the area where the animal bit you if possible, as soon as possible after the initial bite. A series of rabies vaccines can possibly help your body learn to identify and fight the virus. Rabies vaccines are given as injections in your arm. You receive four injections in total over a 14 day period.
...the patient was exhibiting delirium, visual hallucinations, wide variations in pulse rate and rapid, shallow breathing. Within four days—the median length of survival after the onset of serious rabies symptoms—E.P. was dead (Geiling).
Rabies had been known about since 2000 B.C. but technology was obviously not advanced enough to try and do anything about the spread of the virus. In the year 1885, France and Belgium had become plagued with more and more cases of the rabies that the fear had soon began to become a very reasonable fear for people to have. This gave Louis Pasteur ample reason to research more about the virus.
This bullet-shaped, enveloped RNA virus is one of the most formidable, zoonotic, neurologic diseases due to the prognosis almost invariably fatal in both humans and animals. Rabies is a genotype 1 Lyssavirus and can be found throughout the world, with the exception of Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Japan, the majority of Western Europe, Fiji, Hawaii and Guam (Sykes, 2014).
Rabies is a highly infectious viral disease that can easily ruin and eventually end the lives of both humans and animals alike. Rabies comes in two forms for animals. It comes in the form of paralytic rabies, which is the kind that puts you in paralysis right from the beginning, skipping the symptoms of agitation and excitability. Rabies also appears in the form of furious rabies, which is completely different in the way that it makes the victim restless, vicious and agitated. When humans get rabies, their symptoms start out with simple headaches and fevers and later progresses to terrible things such as becoming hydrophobic because of painful throat spasms and paralysis. A definite diagnosis of rabies needs lab analysis of
Abstract: Rabies is a dangerous disease that affects both animals and humans. Rabies is caused by the lyssa virus and is almost 100% fatal. The majority of the people infected die from it but there have been a small number of miraculous cases where people have survived. One very special case took place in the life of Jeanna Giese because she recovered without the use of rabies vaccines. There are four FDA approved vaccines for public usage but they are not guaranteed to cure. Rabies affects many people around the world, especially in underdeveloped nations. It is a very serious disease and is preventable if treatment is received before any symptoms show up.
