Race is a Social Construct
Although race does not exist from a biological perspective, race does exist as an idea and social construct. Race is ingrained in the history of American culture. Our society is conditioned to think racially. Our views of people automatically put them in racial categories. We make certain value judgments about them based on little more than the color of their skin. So race does exist only as an idea in our thinking.
We cannot put the idea of race under a microscope. We cannot measure it or determine what color the idea is, but it is very real nonetheless. Although conjured up and created in the minds of men, racial classification is here. It was conceived to deceive and distort, but it is no less real to the average American than living in the U.S. The idea of race is real. But racial classification was built on a myth.

Because people exhibit physical differences based on their geographical location, it is logical that they would have different physical features. For instance, the average Norwegian looks very different from the average Sudanese. Their skin color, body type, hair and other physical characteristics will generally differ. To ignore the differences because of different geographical locations would be ridiculous. We see those differences around us every day.
However, those differences are not based on DNA or genetic makeup. Instead, the differences are based on the ability to adapt to different environments. Therefore, from a geographical perspective, we can classify people in a general way by geographical regions of origin. This viewpoint rests on the fact that racial differences are relatively minor and are all based on superficial physical characteristics.

The idea of race in society is truly that; an idea. However, one of the first things one notices about another human is their perceived race. Often, incorrect assumptions are made about a person, based on his race. In addition, many believe race can be determined by biological factors. However, there is no biological basis to race. Without a doubt, genes play a role in our skin, hair, and eye color; however, there are not certain genes present in an entire race and not another. Race is not clear cut; if one were to travel from either pole to the equator, a specific location could not be identified to separate any two races.
Race is not an element of human biology (like breathing oxygen or reproducing sexually); nor is it even an idea (like the speed of light or the value of π) that can be plausibly imagined to live an external life of its own. The term “race” has been defined differently throughout history. Race has been not only defined as skin color but also defined as social class, national origin, religion, and language have all been used in history to separate different groups in society. The concept of race dates back to recent human history. Race is an integral part of life for individuals residing in the United States. However, this concept of “race”, that many Americans believe to be true, has no biological backing; it is merely a social construct. Looking at genetics, and even evolution it becomes clear that race is not real. But, even though race is not real, it can have very real consequences (such as racism). So in this sense race becomes a very real thing, as it affects millions of people living today. Race, biologically is not a real thing, but due to its impact, socially and culturally, it has become real.

Think about how much race affects a person every day. Maybe today you disclosed your race on the SATs or were passed over for a job opportunity because your name is too “black”. Race exists in our culture, but racism should not. Everyone tries to get rid of it, but humans ultimately created it, because it is a construct of cultural. Every day we form judgements and fall into stereotypes. Our children watch this discrimination and let it carry into their own futures. Strangely, these judgements and stereotypes are not technically race, merely the creations of an ignorant culture. To begin avoiding this, people need to learn that technical race and our world view of race are very different, and that humans may be too unique for concrete groupings.

The social construction of race is a topic that is worth discussing. In the United States the black/white color line has historically been rigidly defined and enforced. People have been stereotypical and afraid as long as I can remember. Labeling people as we think they should be based on the color of their skin or just thinking it’s in their biology so they must be this or they must be that. Although race does not exist in the world in an objective way, it still is relevant in today’s society. It is obvious that race is real in society and it affects the way we view others as well as ourselves. Race is a social construct that is produced by the superior race and their power to regulate. “The category of ‘white’ was subject to challenges brought about by the influx of diverse groups who were not of the same Anglo-Saxonstock as the founding immigrants” (Omi and Winant 24). Frankly, ‘white’ was the norm, the others were considered an outcast.
The concept of race in modern world that is generally accepted by the public is different groups of people that share the same genetic divergences that are observable (Phenotype) (wiki). The most prominent example is the classification system use by the U.S Government: White (Caucasoid); Black (Congoid); Asian (Mongoloid); Native and Hispanic. This system adheres the modern race concept as all of the classifications are based on phenotypes of different people. Some older concepts of race are based on differences in ethnicity or origin. This kind of concepts were used in WWII as Germany classified its people into Aryan (pure German) and Jewish. Although viewed differently, most of the time the sole purpose of race classification is for the majority to enforced discriminations on the minority (Racism).
Sociologist define race as a “socially defined category based on real or percived biological differnces between groups of people”. In the 19th century biologist came up with the three different categories that groups the three human races: Mongoloid, Causasoid and Negroid. They belived that different races where charaterized by biological makeup. But modern sciences have proved that theory to be wrong because there is no such thing as a “pure” race. We are 99.9% genetically idenitcal. Race is just a concept humans made up, it isn’t actually real.
Race is a social construct that was created by the Europeans in order to minoritize different racial groups. In the reading by Bonilla-Silva, he defines race to be manmade, “This means that notions of racial difference are human creations rather than eternal, essential categories… racial categories have a history and are subject to change.” For example in a lecture by Dr. Aguilar-Hernandez, he stated that the Irish, Italians and Jews were called black before but are now considered white, Mexican-Americans were also considered white up until the 1980s. These ideas lead to the racialization of racial groups.
