Race and ethnicity play a role in every aspect of the criminal justice system, especially when comparing victimization rates. In class, we were placed into groups to discuss race and ethnicity. Most of the class said ethnicity is your cultural background whereas race is your physical appearance. Although the class had similar answers, no one group had exactly the same answer (CCJ345W). According to Barak in his chapter “Understanding Race”, race is socially defined by traits such as “physical characteristics, national origin, language, culture, and religion”(Barak, 2011:46). Working in the criminal justice system it is necessary to recognize race in order to have a total understanding of the clients that you will work with. There are disparities between Whites, African Americans and Latinos when it comes to the rates that violent crimes occur, and there are also disparities between these races when it comes to reporting these violent crimes. Although most crimes that occur are white on white, African American on African American, or one specific race onto the same race; the rate that these crimes occur in different racial communities are drastically unequal. Sexual assault can be defined as the unwanted and offensive touching of the perpetrator to the victim. Sexual assault is a range from attempted rape to aggravated sexual assault. Sexual assault happens more within a certain age group as opposed to a certain racial community. College age students are most at risk of facing sexual assault, and many of the cases involve acquaintances as opposed to strangers. People of all ages, races, and genders are most likely to be victimized by someone they know. African American women are three times more likely than white women to be victims of sexual assault. In an article on the rape victim advocates perception of race on a victim’s response to rape, the findings were that “the majority (57%) of advocates interviewed believe that victims of color respond to rape differently or face different issues than white victims do” (Maier, 2008: 303). Two stereotypical images that were also discussed by Maier in this article are the stereotype of the African American women as a “jezebel” and as a “matriarch”. The jezebel stereotype is that African American women are promiscuous and that because of this they are more deserving of their victimization than compared to other races. This image implies that African American women bring their victimization on themselves.
