Another brutal race riot was the Tulsa Race riot of 1921. On May 30, 1921, Dick Rowland, a 19-year old african-american shoe shiner, entered an elevator with Sarah Page, a 17-year-old white elevator operator. Rowland accidentally stepped on her foot or grabbed her to catch himself from falling. After screaming, police were called to arrest Rowland. He managed to flee but was arrested the next day. Newspaper articles and widespread rumors caused people to form a lynch mob. The court case  was held the next day on May 31, 1921. While Rowland was being tried, many white supremacists surrounded the courthouse waiting to lynch him. At around 10pm, shots were fired, which started the beginning of the riot. Among the copious amounts of race riots arising in many parts of the United States, the Chicago race riot is the most recognizable. On July 27, 1919, a black boy named Eugene Williams was stoned by whites and drowned in the 29th street beach after accidentally swimming into white claimed territory. While this angered African Americans, the refusal by police to arrest the offenders of the attack infuriated them even more. The incident caused a full blown race riot, leaving 23 blacks and 15 whites dead, 537 people injured, and 1,000 black families homeless over a 13 period. In World War II, all different races served in the military branches all over the world. There was a lot of racism going on throughout this period, with any race, but especially at this time it was happening with African Americans. People of the law creates profiles about different kinds of people that commit certain types of crimes that may lead officers to certain kinds of scenarios about different groups of people and also act a different kind of way either when that group of particular of people are around. As of 30 June 2006, the national rate of imprisonment for Indigenous Australians was 13 times higher than the rate for non-Indigenous Australians [ABS]. In modern society, there is an assumption that over-representation of Indigenous Australians in the criminal system is due to systemic bias. According to Snowball and Weatherburn (2006), systemic racism refers to any set of arrangements, procedures or rules that results in systemic unfairness to a particular ethnic or racial group. [REF2] Snowball and Weatherburn also found that there was some small ‘residual effect of race on sentencing’ which may suggest that ‘racial bias may influence the sentencing process even if its effects are only small’. Minorities have been denied legally and socially rights in the past by the dominant race, White Americans. The conclusion of the Civil War in favor of the north was supposed to mean an end to slavery and equal rights for the former slaves. Although laws and amendments were passed to uphold this assumption, the United States Government fell short. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were proposed and passed within five years of the Civil War’s conclusion. These amendments were to create equality throughout the United States, especially in the south where slavery had been most abundant. Making equality a realization would not be an easy task. American society likes to believe that race relations in our country are no longer strained.
