The space race was a battle for technological superiority between the United States and the Soviet Union during the cold war. Each wanted to showcase the strengths of their political and economic systems. Its effects were far reaching; most notably the space race acted as a relief valve to the military tensions during this era of potential nuclear warfare, it eventually expanded collaboration on issues of mutual interest and provided opportunities to work together although deep mistrust and disdain that exists to this day with Russia and some of the remnants of the USSR.

President Truman’s response was to try and contain communism by supporting those who were fighting against them, which eventually brought American soldiers into the fight in Korea and Vietnam. The Cold War persisted until the formal dissolution of the U.S.S.R in 1991 as the Soviet system of economy lost out to the powerhouse economy of Capitalism as many Soviet bloc countries broke away.
The origins of the space race can be traced back to (date), when Russian scientist (name) created and launched the first rocket. The Nazis pushed the technology forward in World War Two with missile development for the war and the dreaded V-2 rockets which rained down on Britain. At the end of the war it was a mad dash for the U.S. and Soviets to grab German technology, engineers, and scientists who then went on to help develop each countries missile and space programs. (Chertok 2005) The beginning of the space race started as a quest to develop rockets capable of carrying nuclear weapons to each other’s countries and then the race began to put the first artificial satellite into orbit.
The beginning of the space race came from Stalin’s decision to build ICBM’s to counter the threat of the Americans maintaining a fleet of long range bombers as well medium range bombers based in Europe with the capability and purpose to drop nuclear bombs on the U.S.S.R. who gained atomic capability in 1949.
