Racial Prejudice Issues

The definition of prejudice may vary among the different psychologist but most will agree that prejudice has something to do with prejudgment, typically negative, about a group. (Fiskie, 1998; Jones, 1997; Nelson, 2002 ). According to Plous (2003), Prejudice is not exactly considered an opinion, but an attitude which includes feeling such as hating the group, rather than believing they’re bad. Within psychology, we can link prejudice with discrimination and stereotyping (Plous, 2003). Although each may go together, they can be done separately. Prejudice and discrimination are most likely absent in a positive stereo type (Plous, 2013). For example describing an ethnic group as “family oriented”. Stereo typing does little to no harm without discrimination or prejudice. A generalized form of prejudice may lack discrimination and stereo types, such as being against foreigners.

Today, racism and racial discrimination is something you see everyday. Whether it be in a news story, an article on social media, or something that you personally witness, but what is racism? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. This means that one race will discriminate another because they believe that their race is better. Some people think that the only people that can be racist are white people. Their definition of racism is summed up to white people discriminating against the minority including African Americans and Latinos. Their definition of racism is not true. Racism does go both ways. Anyone is capable of saying, “Hey, my race is better than yours for this reason.” This is called reverse racism. The term reverse racism is referred to as discrimination against racial majorities inflicted by racial minorities. Reverse racism does exist and it is just as common as racism (“Racism”).

In the American Constitution, the first amendment is the Freedom of Speech. It says that people should have their voices heard, but at the same time if an individual don’t know what they saying, they should have other ethnicity different point of views. During the major incidents that’ve been happening in 2014 and 2015, when it comes to racism and race related issues, we only hear one voice. Media said that many of the writers covering these topics in the past have been from the majority white men, writing about issues that don 't really affect them. These issues should be covered by black writers men, or women.

Today I will be talking about how prejudice and discrimination affected the development of sociology in America in the late 19th century and early 20th century. In the late 19th century women didn't have the same rights as men. When it came to providing for the family only the men could work outside the home. Women were expected to stay home, cook, clean, make clothing for the family, and take fare of the children. Segregation went on in the 19th century as well. No African Americans were allowed at the same place or the times as a caucasian person. Because this was going on in this century attending school, churches, restaurants, concerts and many other places caused problems with socializing together. This also affected some of the people

Racism, prejudice, and stereotyping are major issues in America. Racism is defined as “a set of beliefs that one’s own racial group is superior to other groups (Benokraitis, 2014, p. 185). The existence of racism comes hand to hand with hate groups. Hate groups are an organized group of individuals who demonstrates hatred against people of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other designated sector of society. One particular hate group that I would like to explore is “World Church of the Creator”. “World Church of the Creator” is a white supremacist group that considers itself a religion found on the proposition that the white race is “nature’s highest creation ("ADL- World Church of the Creator", 2001).

So why did I feel afraid when I went to Arizona and people stared at me?

Racial prejudices exist everywhere, it is defined as, “a negative attitude towards a group of people based on race — not on direct knowledge or experience” (Dictionary, 2014). There are many factors that influence racial prejudices in people including, fear, hatred, intolerance, and discrimination. As a whole, we need to come together and get over these barriers in order to break this mold.

Race Discrimination is a problem in our world for many reason. While many people may say that it this isn’t a problem because dIscrimination/racism could separate people in categories or races. Even though insulting one's race is bad, it could describe who they are. It can also make people have a stronger faith on themselves to push on and live life with the insult.This is still an issue that we need to think about because it can affect people in many ways. In this essay this problem will be explored by examining how this issue emerges in The wife story by Ursula Le Guin as well as in additional research that can be found in the book, The rise and fall of the jim crows law by Richard Wormser and in the website What is discrimination

Some physician's are African-American while most are caucasian but in today's society most are from India or other countries, especially the specialists. While most doesn't mind the different races some do and will not send you to those types of people. Maybe a patient only wants to see a certain type of race considering their age and how they were raised.

This statement is suggesting that even though America has voted a black person into the highest office, it does not mean that the country is not racists. More time is needed in order to feel comfortable to speak in public about racial bias in various setting because some believe that it does not exist or that not talking about it will make the issue

Societal expectations are certain standards that one should abide by in their lifetime to be considered to fit the characteristics specific to certain groups. When some individuals step out of that barricade of expectations they are looked upon differently and possibly discriminated against by their peers. Racial prejudice and sexism has been a focal point of discussion amongst world leaders and people alike. From the 1900s eras when women could not vote, slavery, the Civil Rights movement, to present day, people (especially minorities) have fought against such acts to ensure that their civil and human rights are being upheld. The adversities that were once prevalent and thriving during the Jim Crow era became less perceptible, but instead transitioned to individuals undermining minorities through prejudice and discrimination. Being that the film, Crash, showed prejudice remarks toward a variety of minorities. The film demonstrates that racial prejudice is not a phenomenon specific to one ethnic or social group but instead focuses on various racial stereotypes, vexations toward various lifestyles, and social statuses.

The art that I create is a reflection of what I see in the world. What I want to change in the world, the problems in society that I notice, and my personal encounters with life. Living in a world as developed and educated as our own, one would think that racism would not be such a problem within our society, but it seems to be the one aspect that we can never get away from. Racism is a topic that I feel passionate about. I believe that every person is unique and adds to the diversity of every society in their own way. Racism, however, contradicts my belief, believing that because of each individual’s unique nature, some find themselves feeling superior to others, namely members of a different skin color to their own. Although everyone is raised in different fashions, I have been fortunate to be raised into an open-minded family, with my family helping me see the equalities we all share.

Racial prejudice can often occur during first impressions, as individuals quickly associate a person’s appearance with particular personality characteristics. An example of this association would be to assume that someone who is wearing a hijab is a terrorist or that someone of an Asian decent is highly intellectual. These associations are often used to organise our lives and arrange the overwhelming stimulation, however individuals must be able to discriminate when categorizing is appropriate and when it is inappropriate. To reduce problems of racial prejudice in society, individuals need to recognize and alter these cognitive strategies that are causing them to briefly categorize people inappropriately. Nonetheless, children need to become aware of these destructive cognitive strategies and discouraged from categorizing people as well. Witter, Hammer and Dunn discuss in the textbook Adjust, that stereotypes are frequently automatic customs that occur unintentionally and unconsciously. However, they also express that these automatic customs can be superseded, though it requires awareness from the individual that their prejudgment are flawed. If effort it put forth, individuals can alter their subjective negative perceptions, reforming them towards thoughts of equality and kindness towards all members in society.
