Stereotypes of Minorities leads to Racial Profiling
Racial profiling is a longstanding and extremely disturbing national issue that is often not addressed due to the ignorant belief that the United States has entered a “post-racial era”. Racial profiling refers to the discriminatory act of targeting an individual for suspicion of crime solely based on the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. This reliance on group characteristics used by law enforcement has proven to be extremely problematic as it undermines the basic foundation of justice, creates fear and distrust towards police by citizens and is statistically proven to not increase crime prevention. Racial profiling is an ineffective technique used by law enforcement to reduce crime.
In order for police efforts to be effective, the police force must be trusted by the community. Not only does racial profiling alienate communities from law enforcements, it also impedes ethical policing and undermines the basic foundation of justice which relies heavily on trust and equality. Individuals from black, Latino and Arab heritage are often viewed as dangerous and are wrongfully and unjustly singled out for sobriety, drug and weapon checks. The absence of justice and equality in these situations leads to a resentment of authority which creates a mutual lack of trust and respect between law enforcement and communities.
