Racial profiling is defined by the National Institute of Justice as, “practice that targets people for suspicion of crime based on their race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.” Racial profiling has been an issue in America since the birth of our nation and maintaining a negative connotation. Despite the negativity surrounding this practice, it can be argued that there are positive aspects such as cutting costs on searching for criminals, and it can also be argued that this practice is unnecessary based on the efficiency of it based on its history.
In support of racial profiling, it would help law enforcement be able to identify people who fit the description of a committed crime. Stop-and-frisk can be practiced without probable cause so cops have the potential to stop a small crime such as shoplifting or a crime such as an act of terrorism. If a law abiding citizen is innocent of any crimes then the police would allow them to leave freely in a short amount of time. If a certain race is commiting crimes at a higher rate then it would only make sense for law enforcement to focus in on that group. Both President Trump and Vice President Pence stated in an interview with MSNBC that being diplomatic hinders law enforcement.
